Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 (“Runners”) has eight standard vaults across the island, plus a separate hidden vault at Cluster Coast. Six standard vaults require a Rare Vault Key; the Frosted Flats and Sinister Strip Sprite Vaults require the rarer Epic Vault Keycard.
Keys and keycards come from chest loot rather than bosses, NPCs, or guaranteed floor spawns. Once you have the correct item, travel to a compatible vault, follow any nearby ladder or bunker entrance underground, and use Fortnite’s contextual interaction prompt at the door.

- Rare Vault Keys are the more common of the two standard key types and open six vaults.
- Epic Vault Keycards are less common and open only the Frosted Flats and Sinister Strip Sprite Vaults.
- Epic Vault Keycards have a better chance of appearing in Rare Chests than in ordinary chests.
- Finding a key in a particular match is still random. You can loot an entire area without receiving one.
When you pick up a key, Fortnite briefly marks the nearest compatible vault on your map. That marker is only a location hint: the vault may be far away or already inside the storm.
How to open a standard vault
- Search chests until you find a Rare Vault Key or Epic Vault Keycard.
- Choose a vault that accepts that exact item.
- Travel to the location and look for the bunker, basement, or nearby ladder if the door is not visible at ground level.
- Approach the vault interaction point.
- Use the on-screen contextual interaction prompt while the matching key is in your inventory.
There is no universal keyboard, controller, or mobile button label for the final step. Fortnite displays the appropriate interaction button for your platform and current control settings; no typed command or console command is required.
Exact locations for all eight standard vaults
Frosted Flats Sprite Vault
Find the vault beneath the FrosDeez ice-cream and slushy building at the foot, or eastern side, of the ice mountain in Frosted Flats. The entrance is underground, so use the nearby ladder rather than searching only inside the building.

This is one of the two Sprite Vaults and requires an Epic Vault Keycard. A Rare Vault Key will not work.
Sinister Strip Sprite Vault
Go to the giant The Shape hologram in the middle of Sinister Strip. The vault is underground below the landmark.
Sinister Strip is the second Sprite Vault and also requires an Epic Vault Keycard. It cannot be opened with the standard Rare Vault Key.
The Battlewoods Vault
On the southeastern outskirts of The Battlewoods, look for the bunker near the Extraction Site. The vault is inside this bunker rather than in one of the main POI buildings.
It accepts a Rare Vault Key.
Wonkeeland Vault
Search the southwestern side of Wonkeeland. The entrance is underground near a building at the end of a dirt path.

Bring a Rare Vault Key to open it.
Shaken Sanctuary Vault
Go to the main building on the southeastern side of Shaken Sanctuary, specifically the section with three pools. The vault is underground beneath the building.
It requires a Rare Vault Key.
Sunken Shores Vault
The vault is not necessarily inside the main Sunken Shores structures. Instead, travel to the gas station northeast of Sunken Shores and check its lower level.
This vault uses a Rare Vault Key.
Heatwave Harbor Vault
Leave the main Heatwave Harbor POI and head east to the Shady Eyes building. The vault is in the building’s basement.
It opens with a Rare Vault Key.
Lifty Lodge Vault
Look southeast of Lifty Lodge for the Mile High Retreat Warehouse. The vault is underground beneath the warehouse, and the exterior ladder provides access to the lower area.
It requires a Rare Vault Key.
Cluster Coast secret vault
Cluster Coast has a separate duck-themed hidden vault that does not use either standard key type. You need a Rubber Duck keycard obtained from one specific duck.
Find the sunglasses-wearing rubber duck
Search Cluster Coast for the suspicious rubber duck wearing sunglasses. Reported search areas include:
- the western outdoor swimming pool;
- the indoor swimming pool;
- the aquarium in the same building; and
- the central fountain with the large golden duck head.
Most ducks in the area are decorations. Only the sunglasses-wearing suspicious duck provides the keycard. Interact with it to receive the Rubber Duck keycard.

- Find the Cluster Coast building marked with the “Get Flocked” duck-in-a-tuxedo poster.
- Enter the building and locate the empty glass display case.
- Interact with the case to place the Rubber Duck keycard.
- The sofa and part of the floor descend, revealing the hidden underground area.
The reported rewards include two Rare Chests, three regular chests, a locker, and gold bars. The documented procedure still requires the Rubber Duck keycard even though this vault does not use a Rare Vault Key or Epic Vault Keycard. The location and procedure are detailed by Dot Esports.

Common vault problems and fixes
The key does not open the vault
Check the item type. A Rare Vault Key cannot open the Frosted Flats or Sinister Strip Sprite Vaults. Those two doors require an Epic Vault Keycard.
There is no vault door at the marked location
Several vaults are underground or inside bunkers. Check for the nearby ladder at Frosted Flats and Lifty Lodge, and search the bunker entrance near The Battlewoods. Wonkeeland, Shaken Sanctuary, and Sinister Strip also require you to reach the underground section.
The Sunken Shores marker seems wrong
Check the gas station northeast of the POI, especially its lower level. The vault is reported at that separate structure rather than necessarily inside the main Sunken Shores buildings.
Recommended Free Tools
No key appeared in the match
That is a normal result of chest-loot RNG. Standard keys do not have guaranteed spawns, so the absence of a key does not mean the vault has been disabled.
The key marker is inside the storm
The marker identifies the nearest compatible vault, not the safest or most reachable one. Decide whether the loot is worth rotating into the storm, or use the key in a later match.
The duck vault will not open
Make sure you found the suspicious duck wearing sunglasses, not one of the ordinary decorative ducks. Then place the Rubber Duck keycard in the empty display case inside the building with the “Get Flocked” poster.
Outdated vault advice to ignore
Older Fortnite guides may describe a single key for every vault, a boss or NPC that drops the key, or the former red-door button at Classified Canyon. Those instructions do not match the Chapter 7 Season 3 system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Classified Canyon button method became outdated when New Sanctuary replaced Classified Canyon in Chapter 7 Season 2 on March 19, 2026. Reports of a New Sanctuary teleport-tunnel inventory trick are unconfirmed, potentially version-specific, and should not be treated as a supported way to open a current vault. For the current documented system, use chest-found keys and keycards at the matching vaults.
Quick Recap
Quick vault checklist
- Rare Vault Key for six standard vaults.
- Epic Vault Keycard for Frosted Flats or Sinister Strip.
- Chest loot is random; no standard key has a guaranteed spawn.
- Follow ladders and bunker entrances instead of searching only at surface level.
- At Cluster Coast, find the sunglasses-wearing duck and use its keycard in the “Get Flocked” building.
- Expect other players to contest marked vaults and plan an exit route before opening one.
