The design puts one hub motor at each wheel, uses two controller potentiometers as throttle and brake inputs, and lets the driver select front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive. It keeps the Bobby Car body, but substantially rebuilds its steering and wheel mounts.
How the hoverboard-to-Bobby-Car conversion works
The project, documented by its creator ivc, uses two hoverboards as donors for four brushless hub motors and associated drive electronics. The Xbox 360 controllers are repurposed as input hardware: two potentiometers act as throttle and brake triggers, while two push buttons independently switch the motor controllers. That arrangement provides front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive, as well as reverse, according to the project wiki.

The central adaptation is mechanical as much as electrical. The original plastic body remains, but much of the front steering assembly is replaced with custom 3D-printed parts, and the rear wheel structure is rebuilt around a mounting plate and reinforcement. These values describe the author’s vehicle, not a performance guarantee for another conversion. A secondary Hackster.io article uses “18 mph” in its headline, but the detailed project wiki is the source for the figures above: Hackster.io coverage.
What had to be fabricated or modified
Front steering and wheel clearance
The author replaced much of the original front steering assembly with custom 3D-printed ABS parts. The wiki says the front wheel clearance was raised by 10 mm to make room for the larger hoverboard wheels. The project author notes metal parts or support inserts as a possible future improvement; the published design should not be read as a general structural validation of printed steering components.

Rear mounting and reinforcement
The rear wheel structure combines wood reinforcement with a 205 × 70 × 12 mm 6061 aluminum plate. This is a project-specific mounting solution. The documentation does not establish load limits or certify the arrangement for other vehicles, riders, or use conditions.
Parts identified in the build documentation
The wiki’s bill of materials names the Big New Bobby Car base, two hoverboards, two Xbox 360 controllers, XT60 60 A connectors, 14 AWG silicone power wire, 608ZZ bearings, 10 mm motor-grade bearings, a stainless steering rod, a PVC tube, and JST SM hall-sensor extension connectors. It also lists the aluminum plate and wood pieces used in the structure.

Controller firmware and calibration
The project retains hoverboard motor controllers identified by the wiki as STM32F103-based and uses custom firmware derived from the hoverboard-firmware-hack project. The author describes setting battery cell count and voltage calibration, calibrating ADC input ranges, checking motor direction, compiling the firmware, and flashing through the board’s SWD interface. An ST-Link V2 compatible programmer is named for flashing, and a USB-to-TTL adapter is listed for serial debugging.
This is not a universal flash-and-go recipe. The wiki notes differences between the two controllers and the need for controller-specific configuration. Hardware revisions, pinouts, firmware compatibility, and calibration must be checked for the actual boards being adapted; the documentation does not establish that another hoverboard controller can use the same settings.

Why this is a substantial conversion, not a simple parts swap
- Four motors require coordinated controls: the Xbox controller potentiometers provide analog inputs, while separate buttons select which controller groups are active.
- The donor hardware must match the firmware work: controller-specific differences affect configuration, calibration, and flashing.
- The chassis changes are significant: printed steering parts, altered wheel clearance, and a reinforced rear mount replace or modify original structures.
- Battery and wiring are part of the system: the project specifies a 36 V battery and components such as XT60 connectors and 14 AWG wire, but does not certify another builder’s electrical design.
Safety and limits of what the documentation establishes
The project pages describe the build and the author’s reported performance, but they do not establish independent safety testing, certification, stopping distance, road legality, or validated operating limits. The stated 29 km/h maximum, approximately 10 km range, and structural details should therefore be treated as project-reported information, not proof that a replica will perform or operate safely in the same way.
