Yes—the leaked trailer is authentic, but it is not a preview of a game that is still scheduled to launch. Journalist Jason Schreier confirmed that the footage came from the Mass Effect project BioWare was developing before the studio closed. BioWare cinematic supervisor Tony de Waal separately said the next Mass Effect was canceled when the closure occurred. The clip is therefore best understood as an in-engine cinematic record of an unreleased project, not evidence of a finished or currently funded Mass Effect 5.
Is the Mass Effect 5 trailer real?
Jason Schreier publicly confirmed the trailer’s authenticity, resolving the initial uncertainty around footage posted to Reddit. Schreier wrote: “Can confirm that this is a real trailer of the Mass Effect game that BioWare was developing up until its closure yesterday.”

Was Mass Effect 5 canceled?
Yes. Tony de Waal said BioWare closed and that the next Mass Effect was canceled at the same time. He also said approximately 50 remaining employees lost their jobs, ending more than 29 years of his BioWare career.

That wording matters because it describes a project termination rather than a delay or a change of release window. There is no reported publisher plan, successor studio, funded revival or announcement that the footage has been converted into a different product.
What does the “Mass Effect Universe” trailer show?
The available description identifies an in-engine cinematic montage rather than a playable demonstration. Such footage can establish a visual target, tone or proof-of-concept scene, but it does not prove that the underlying systems, missions, dialogue, characters or environments were complete.

What RPG ambitions did the developer describe?
De Waal characterized the team’s goal as unusually broad player agency. He wrote, “I believe we were making something special: a level of autonomy and choice that no other game has been able to match.” He said the developers studied what Larian and CD Projekt were doing while trying to advance Mass Effect without abandoning the trilogy’s identity.
More autonomy and choice
The statement points to a design ambition centered on consequential decisions and player freedom. It does not provide a feature list, so it should not be read as confirmation of branching campaigns, systemic quests, romance options or any particular role-playing mechanic.

Learning from other modern RPGs
Referencing Larian and CD Projekt places the project in the context of large, choice-driven role-playing games. De Waal’s wording indicates research and inspiration, not a formal partnership, borrowed technology or a promise that the canceled game would match another studio’s systems.
Continuing the trilogy’s identity
The team’s stated challenge was to push the series forward while remaining true to the original trilogy. Because the project never reached release, there is no public evidence showing how it would have handled continuity, returning characters, galactic politics or the consequences of earlier games.

What is confirmed, and what remains unknown?
| Question | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Is the video genuine? | Yes. Jason Schreier confirmed it was a real trailer for BioWare’s project. |
| Was the project active? | Yes. The footage came from the game BioWare was developing before its closure. |
| Was it canceled? | Yes. Tony de Waal said the next Mass Effect was canceled when BioWare closed. |
| Was it playable? | Not established. Reports describe an in-engine cinematic montage. |
| Is there a release date? | None has been reported. |
| Could it be revived? | No revival path, funding decision or successor announcement has been reported. |
| Is there a retail product? | No confirmed preorder, physical edition, collectible, book or other product is tied to this canceled project. |
Will this Mass Effect game ever come out?
There is no evidence of an upcoming release. The project was canceled during BioWare’s closure, and the reporting available does not identify a legal, funded effort to restart it. A future Mass Effect title from another team would be a separate project unless its publisher explicitly confirms that assets, technology or design work from this one were retained.
Fans should also avoid treating the leaked trailer as a roadmap. A cinematic can survive after a project changes direction, while implementation details, narrative plans and production rights may not. Until Electronic Arts or a successor studio announces a new project, the footage documents what BioWare was pursuing—not what players can expect to download.

How should readers evaluate new claims about the canceled project?
- Check the source. A named developer or established journalist is stronger evidence than an anonymous uploader or repost.
- Separate authenticity from scope. A genuine trailer proves that footage existed; it does not prove a finished build or specific mechanics.
- Look for an official status update. Only a publisher or successor studio can establish a funded revival, release plan or legal continuity.
- Demand project-stage clarity. Ask whether a clip is an in-engine cinematic, vertical slice, prototype or playable build.
- Keep continuity claims qualified. Visual references to the trilogy do not confirm story canon, returning characters or the final setting.

Does “Mass Effect Universe” mean the game had a final name?
Not necessarily. The phrase appears at the end of the reported montage, but no source establishes it as the game’s shipping title. It may have been a project or branding card used for the trailer.
Could leaked footage be used in a future Mass Effect game?
It is possible in general for a studio to reuse concepts or assets, but no source reports that this footage, its technology or its design documents were transferred to a funded successor. Any future game should be treated as unconnected until its publisher says otherwise.
