Aloft is the Steam survival game that turns the floating island itself into your home, vehicle, and long-term project. Developed by Astrolabe Interactive Inc. and published by Funcom, it entered Steam Early Access on January 15, 2025, so it is already playable rather than merely upcoming. You gather materials, build on islands, sail through the sky, glide between locations, farm, cook, rescue animals, and fight a fungal corruption that threatens the world. The comparison with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fits its sky setting and improvisational construction, but Aloft goes further in making a customizable flying island the center of a survival-crafting loop. Its final 1.0 scope is still in development.

What is Aloft?

Aloft is a single-player and multiplayer sandbox survival game set across floating islands. Instead of treating the sky islands as brief destinations, it lets you convert an island into a mobile base and steer that base through the world.

The current Early Access feature set combines resource collection, crafting, construction, skyship sailing, gliding, farming, cooking, animal care, enemy encounters, and exploration of ruins and new islands. Steam lists three diverse biomes, crops, animals, and hundreds of building and decoration pieces. Those systems make the island useful both as infrastructure and as a personal building project.

Progression also has an ecological purpose. Fungal corruption spreads through the environment; players can cure it, restore biodiversity, rescue animals, and improve an island’s resistance to future outbreaks. Exploration therefore supplies more than materials: it supports the recovery of the world itself.

Can you really build a flying island in Aloft?

Yes. An island can be reshaped into a customizable skyship that carries your home, farms, production areas, and decorations while you travel between floating regions.

Island as base

Construction pieces let you organize a permanent base rather than repeatedly abandoning temporary camps. You can decide where to place living areas, crafting stations, crops, animal spaces, and decorative structures, then continue expanding as you find new resources.

Island as vehicle

The same landmass functions as transportation. Sailing from a mobile island changes how you approach resource routes and discoveries: you can move the base toward a destination, leave it to glide or explore, and return to a familiar settlement instead of starting over on each island.

Island as shared creation

Aloft supports bringing an island base into another player’s world. Groups can form a shared village, design islands with the island creator, and publish creations through Steam Workshop. That makes construction a social activity as well as a survival requirement.

How does Aloft compare with Tears of the Kingdom?

Both games use floating islands and player-built solutions, but they assign those ideas different jobs. Tears of the Kingdom is an authored adventure in Hyrule where Link uses abilities such as Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall to improvise traversal, combat, and puzzles. Aloft is a survival sandbox in which the island itself remains the player’s persistent, upgradeable home.

Aspect Aloft The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Primary structure Survival-crafting sandbox across floating islands Single-player adventure across Hyrule, including sky islands
Role of construction Build a lasting base and turn an island into a skyship Use Ultrahand and Fuse to create situational vehicles, tools, and weapons
Progression focus Gathering, crafting, farming, cooking, exploration, and curing fungal corruption Exploration, battle, puzzle-solving, and uncovering the threat to Hyrule
World stewardship Restore biodiversity, rescue animals, and increase resistance to corruption Adventure framing centered on Hyrule’s crisis rather than a restoration system
Social play Solo or online co-op for up to eight players; shared island bases Single-system Nintendo Switch title

The practical choice is straightforward: choose Aloft if maintaining and traveling with a living sky settlement is the attraction; choose Nintendo’s adventure if you want a tightly authored campaign built around Link’s powers and exploration. Aloft’s construction is less about solving one encounter and more about developing a place that persists between encounters.

Does Aloft have co-op, and how many players can join?

Aloft supports solo play and online multiplayer for up to eight players. Participants can work on one island, establish a shared village, and carry an island base into another player’s world.

That scale changes the work involved. One player can concentrate on farming or cooking while others gather, build, sail, or investigate ruins. Because the base is mobile, a group can coordinate where to take its settlement instead of splitting into unrelated camps. Steam Workshop support also provides a way to share island designs beyond a single session.

Is Aloft still upcoming, or is it out now?

The “upcoming” label is outdated for the current release state. Aloft has been playable on Steam in Early Access since January 15, 2025, but Early Access means development is not finished and the eventual 1.0 version may differ from today’s build.

The developers state that Aloft will remain in Early Access for at least a year with regular updates planned during that period. Their stated plans include additional mechanics, more explorable biomes, meteorological events, new building types and challenges, optimization work, and user-interface improvements. These are development intentions, not guaranteed launch features or a confirmed 1.0 date.

What Early Access means for a purchase decision

  • Core systems such as building, sailing, farming, cooking, and corruption cleansing are already part of the playable concept.
  • Content breadth, balance, performance, and interface details can change through updates.
  • Save compatibility, feature availability, and review totals should be checked on the current Steam listing before buying.

Steam’s review snapshot recorded 84% positive from 1,978 English-language reviews, while 64% of 28 recent reviews were positive at the time of the supplied snapshot. Those numbers are volatile and should be treated as a dated indicator rather than a permanent score.

What do you do during a typical Aloft session?

  1. Collect materials. Search islands and ruins for the resources needed to craft tools, structures, and survival equipment.
  2. Build or refit your island. Add functional rooms, farms, animal areas, and decorations, then adapt the layout as your needs grow.
  3. Sail and glide. Move the island through the sky, scout nearby locations, and glide down to investigate points of interest.
  4. Secure food and production. Grow crops, cook meals, and maintain the stations that keep an expedition supplied.
  5. Confront corruption. Cure fungal growth, rescue affected animals, and restore biodiversity so an island becomes more resilient.
  6. Return and expand. Bring resources and discoveries back to the mobile base, then prepare it for the next route or co-op visit.

The loop ties travel to settlement management: exploration finds the materials and knowledge needed to improve the island, while a better island makes longer journeys and shared play easier to organize.

Who is Aloft best suited to?

Aloft is a strong fit for players who want survival mechanics without giving up a persistent building project, especially those interested in a base that can move rather than remain fixed. Its ecological objectives add a clear reason to revisit damaged areas instead of treating every island as disposable.

It may be a poor match if you want a finished, fully defined campaign, a purely combat-focused adventure, or a solo-only experience with no online component. The Early Access status and planned expansion mean the game’s scope is still changing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Steam game with Zelda-like sky islands?

The game is Aloft, a survival sandbox in which floating islands can be converted into mobile homes and skyships. It is available through Steam Early Access and combines construction, sailing, farming, cooking, and ecosystem restoration.

Can I play Aloft completely solo?

Yes. The current feature list includes single-player mode, so the island-building and corruption-cleansing systems do not require a group. Online co-op is optional rather than mandatory.

Does Aloft have a confirmed 1.0 release date?

No confirmed 1.0 date is established here. The developers say Early Access will last at least a year and describe future features as plans, so timing and final scope can change.

How large is Aloft’s multiplayer group?

Online co-op supports up to eight players. The game also allows an island base to be brought into another player’s world, which is distinct from simply joining a session with a temporary character.
