Verdict: AMD did preview its next-generation RDNA 4 desktop graphics cards at CES 2025, but it did not launch a Radeon RX 8000 card there. The products shown were the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, and AMD later confirmed that desktop RDNA 4 would use the Radeon RX 9000 Series name.
CES was a preview rather than a complete retail launch. AMD formally launched the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on February 28, 2025, with availability scheduled for March 6.

What AMD actually showed at CES 2025
At its January 6, 2025 CES keynote, AMD identified the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 as upcoming RDNA 4 desktop graphics cards. The company also positioned RDNA 4 around stronger ray tracing, expanded AI and machine-learning acceleration, and its next-generation FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, FSR 4. AMD’s CES announcement established the products as forthcoming Radeon cards, but it did not provide the full launch package.

AMD did not publish complete specifications and pricing at the keynote, open retail sales, provide review availability, or present the cards as a finished commercial launch. Calling the event a CES “launch” is therefore accurate only in the loose sense of a product preview or announcement.

Why the full graphics announcement came later
AMD executives later explained that the CES keynote was limited to roughly 45 minutes and that a full GPU launch required room for architecture details, ray tracing, AI features, software, FSR 4, pricing, and performance messaging. They also said AMD wanted to account for Nvidia’s CES announcements and finalize how the products would be positioned.
Those are AMD’s stated reasons, rather than independently established evidence of the company’s internal decision-making. The company said the chips were in the lab and meeting its performance and power targets; that statement should likewise be understood as an attributed AMD claim. Tom’s Hardware’s January 7 report covered the explanation.
There was no confirmed desktop RX 8000 launch
“Radeon RX 8000” was never confirmed by AMD as the desktop name for RDNA 4. Contemporary expectations used that label, but AMD’s subsequent announcements confirmed a different naming strategy: the first desktop RDNA 4 cards were branded Radeon RX 9000.
The careful wording is that AMD skipped or did not use RX 8000 branding for desktop RDNA 4. It is not accurate to say AMD officially canceled an RX 8000 desktop series unless citing a direct statement that says so. Radeon naming can also differ between desktop, mobile, and integrated products, so this correction applies specifically to the desktop RDNA 4 cards discussed at CES.
AMD’s later product listings and launch materials confirmed the RX 9000 branding. AMD’s Radeon desktop graphics page and Tom’s Hardware’s CES coverage document the naming transition.
CES preview versus formal launch
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 6, 2025 | AMD previewed RDNA 4 and identified the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 at CES. |
| February 28, 2025 | AMD formally launched the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 and released their detailed specifications and pricing. |
| March 6, 2025 | AMD stated retail availability would begin for the two cards. |
| May 20, 2025 | AMD introduced the lower-tier Radeon RX 9060 XT at Computex. |
In other words, AMD did announce upcoming cards at CES, but the complete product launch happened nearly two months later.
Final RX 9070-series specifications
AMD’s February launch materials listed the following specifications:
| Specification | Radeon RX 9070 XT | Radeon RX 9070 |
|---|---|---|
| Compute units | 64 | 56 |
| Memory | 16GB GDDR6 | 16GB GDDR6 |
| Memory interface | 256-bit | 256-bit |
| Infinity Cache | 64MB | 64MB |
| Game clock | 2.4GHz | 2.1GHz |
| Boost clock | Up to 3.0GHz | Up to 2.5GHz |
| Total board power | 304W | 220W |
| AMD U.S. suggested price | $599 | $549 |
These prices were AMD’s stated U.S. suggested prices at launch, not guaranteed street prices. Board-partner designs, regional taxes, retailer markups, and availability can change what buyers actually pay. The specifications and launch pricing are documented in AMD’s February 28 announcement and its RX 9000 presentation.

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability

What RDNA 4 was meant to improve
AMD presented RDNA 4 as a generation focused on improving ray-tracing performance and adding more capable AI acceleration, while also introducing FSR 4 for supported Radeon hardware and games. The company’s strategy emphasized the mainstream and upper-mainstream gaming market instead of launching an ultra-expensive halo GPU at the top of the range.
At CES, however, independent testing was not yet available. AMD’s own performance comparisons should not be treated as neutral benchmarks; any fair comparison depends on the game, resolution, settings, drivers, feature configuration, and test source. Likewise, FSR 4 support depends on software and developer integration rather than being a universal guarantee for every game.
What happened to the RX 9060 XT?
The RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 were the principal RDNA 4 desktop cards previewed at CES. AMD expanded the family later, announcing the Radeon RX 9060 XT at Computex on May 20, 2025.

What the CES preview meant for buyers
A buyer seeing the CES preview had a legitimate reason to wait before purchasing an older graphics card: AMD had shown that new RDNA 4 products were coming, but had not yet disclosed the details needed to judge value. The sensible decision was to wait for official specifications, independent reviews, real retail pricing, and availability rather than treating the CES appearance as proof of a specific performance level.
The RX 9070 XT’s stated 304W total board power also makes the complete system important. A power-supply upgrade may be relevant, but the correct requirement depends on the particular board-partner card and the rest of the PC. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition provides the official driver and Radeon settings software, but software features alone should not determine a purchase; game support, price, stock, and independent testing matter too.
The precise answer
Did AMD launch “at least” one Radeon RX 8000 card with RDNA 4 at CES 2025?
Recommended Free Tools
- Strict retail-launch definition: No. The cards were not formally launched or made available for purchase at CES.
- Preview or announcement definition: Yes. AMD previewed at least two upcoming RDNA 4 desktop cards: the RX 9070 XT and RX 9070.
- RX 8000-specific definition: No. Those cards ultimately launched as Radeon RX 9000 products.
The accurate retrospective is therefore: AMD previewed RDNA 4 Radeon cards at CES 2025, but skipped the RX 8000 desktop name and formally launched the RX 9070 series in February, with retail availability scheduled for March.
