AMD Radeon 780M and Intel Arc 8-core integrated graphics are close competitors, not universal winner and loser. The right choice depends less on the badge than on the laptop carrying it: memory bandwidth, sustained power, cooling, drivers, display resolution, battery targets, and price can all change the outcome.
Short answer: AMD Radeon 780M and Intel Arc 8-core integrated graphics are close competitors, and neither is a guaranteed winner. Radeon 780M is often the safer choice when the AMD laptop has fast dual-channel memory and a generous power limit. Intel Arc 8-core can be equally compelling—or faster in some workloads—when it is paired with a well-cooled Core Ultra laptop using fast LPDDR5x memory. The laptop’s cooling, firmware, drivers, memory configuration, display resolution, and sustained power limit matter more than the GPU label by itself.

What is the Radeon 780M?
Radeon 780M is AMD’s RDNA 3 integrated GPU for a number of high-end thin-and-light and performance-oriented Ryzen mobile processors. The Ryzen 7 7840HS combines it with eight Zen 4 CPU cores and a 35–54 W configurable processor power range. The Ryzen 7 7840U also has eight cores and 16 threads, but targets a lower 15–30 W range.
That difference is crucial. A 7840HS laptop with a substantial cooling system can sustain considerably more combined CPU-and-GPU power than a compact 7840U machine. Both may be advertised with “Radeon 780M,” but they should not be treated as identical gaming platforms.
Radeon 780M also appears in later Ryzen 8040 mobile processors, including the Ryzen 7 8845HS and Ryzen 7 8840U. The name therefore identifies a recurring integrated-graphics platform rather than a retail graphics card that can be purchased and installed separately.

In this comparison, Intel Arc 8-core means the integrated Arc graphics used by selected Core Ultra Series 1 H processors. Intel’s Core Ultra 7 155H, for example, is listed with eight Xe-cores and graphics frequency of up to 2.25 GHz. The processor has 16 total CPU cores and 22 threads, a 28 W base-power specification, and support for fast LPDDR5/x memory depending on the laptop design.
The wording can cause confusion because Intel also sells discrete Arc graphics products. Those add-in GPUs have their own product names and dedicated VRAM. The Arc 8-core graphics discussed here is built into the processor and borrows the laptop’s system memory.
Performance: close overall, but not interchangeable
Independent comparison data places Radeon 780M and Intel Arc 8-core graphics in the same broad integrated-GPU tier. That does not produce a universal ranking. One laptop can outperform another with the same processor because it has faster memory, a higher sustained power limit, better cooling, a newer driver, or a less restrictive firmware profile.
There is also no single test that represents every workload. Game engines, graphics APIs, upscaling support, shader compilation, media workloads, and driver optimization can shift the result between AMD and Intel. A benchmark number without the exact laptop, memory arrangement, power profile, driver, settings, and resolution is not a reliable buying conclusion.
Why laptop design changes the result
- Memory bandwidth: Both GPUs use system RAM instead of dedicated VRAM. Dual-channel DDR5 or fast LPDDR5x can make a substantial difference compared with a slower or single-channel configuration.
- Sustained power: Integrated graphics share the processor’s thermal and electrical budget with the CPU. A laptop that briefly boosts high may still perform less well in a long gaming session if it quickly reduces power.
- Cooling: Larger heat pipes, better fans, and a less restrictive chassis can keep GPU clocks higher over time.
- Firmware profiles: Quiet, balanced, and performance modes may apply very different CPU/GPU limits.
- Drivers: Game support and performance can change with AMD or Intel graphics-driver releases.
- Resolution: Integrated graphics are much more comfortable at 1920×1080 or lower than at a high-resolution panel’s native setting.
Gaming expectations
Both solutions are suitable for esports games, older releases, indie games, and many modern titles when settings are chosen realistically. Start with 1080p low or medium settings, then adjust based on the particular game. If frame rate is inadequate, reducing resolution or using a supported upscaling mode usually helps more than small visual-setting changes.

Neither integrated GPU should be treated as a replacement for a current midrange discrete gaming GPU. Newer demanding games may require reduced settings, lower internal resolution, or compromises in texture quality. A laptop with a discrete GPU changes the comparison entirely: in that case, the discrete chip may do most of the rendering, making the integrated-GPU label less relevant.
For a fair game comparison, look for results from the exact laptop model—or one with the same memory, cooling, power mode, display, and driver conditions. Do not use a result from a 54 W Ryzen 7 7840HS laptop to predict the performance of a 15–30 W Ryzen 7 7840U system.
Productivity, video, and creative workloads
For web browsing, office applications, video playback, browser acceleration, and general desktop use, either platform is capable. The CPU, amount of RAM, SSD, display, battery, and operating-system support may matter more than the integrated GPU.
Light content creation can also work well, particularly when the application supports the relevant media engines and GPU acceleration. Sustained rendering, complex effects, large timelines, and demanding 3D work are more sensitive to cooling and power limits. If those workloads are central to the purchase, compare complete laptop reviews and consider a discrete GPU rather than choosing on the integrated-GPU name alone.
Which laptop should you buy?
Choose a Radeon 780M laptop when:
- the AMD system has a Ryzen 7 7840HS-class processor and a strong cooling design;
- it offers dual-channel DDR5 or fast LPDDR5x memory;
- the price is better than a comparable Core Ultra configuration;
- you want a balanced mix of CPU performance, integrated gaming, and battery life; or
- the exact model has documented gaming results that match your intended settings.
If you are shopping for the AMD option, compare a specific AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS laptop rather than searching for a nonexistent standalone “Radeon 780M graphics card.” Also check whether the machine is actually a lower-power 7840U model, since that changes sustained performance.
Choose an Intel Arc 8-core laptop when:
- the Core Ultra 7 155H system has fast LPDDR5x memory and adequate cooling;
- the complete laptop offers a better screen, battery, keyboard, ports, or price;
- your games or applications have favorable results on that exact model; or
- its media features and overall platform fit your workflow better than the AMD alternative.
For the Intel side, compare a specific Intel Core Ultra 7 155H laptop with the AMD machine. Not every Core Ultra laptop exposes identical Arc performance; thin chassis, quiet fan profiles, memory choices, and firmware limits can materially change the result.
Buyer checklist
Before ordering either type of laptop, verify:
- Exact processor: Confirm whether it is a Ryzen 7 7840HS, Ryzen 7 7840U, Ryzen 7 8845HS, Core Ultra 7 155H, or another model. Similar names do not guarantee the same power envelope.
- Memory layout: Check total capacity, whether the RAM is soldered, whether it runs in dual-channel mode, and whether it uses DDR5 or LPDDR5x.
- Power profiles: Look for independent testing of sustained performance in the intended balanced or performance mode.
- Cooling: Read long-load reviews, not just short benchmark results.
- Display: A 2560×1600 or higher panel places more demand on an iGPU than a 1920×1080 panel. Confirm that the refresh rate and resolution suit the games you play.
- Discrete graphics: Determine whether the laptop includes a separate GPU. If it does, that GPU may be the main gaming component.
- Drivers and operating system: Check current AMD or Intel support, game compatibility, and whether the manufacturer provides customized graphics packages.
- Battery and expansion: Compare battery capacity, USB-C charging, ports, SSD access, RAM upgradeability, and price—not just frame rate.
Driver problems, crashes, and rollback
Graphics-driver issues can appear as black screens, game crashes, missing acceleration, visual corruption, or unexpectedly poor performance. Start with the laptop manufacturer’s support page and the official AMD or Intel driver resources, particularly when the manufacturer uses a customized power-management or display implementation. Read release notes and create a restore or rollback path before changing a stable system.

Verdict
Radeon 780M and Intel Arc 8-core graphics are close enough that the laptop should decide the purchase. Radeon 780M is a strong integrated option in Ryzen 7 7840HS- and 7840U-class systems, while Intel Arc 8-core gives selected Core Ultra 7 155H laptops a serious alternative. The sensible winner is the model with the better combination of sustained power, cooling, memory bandwidth, drivers, display, battery, upgradeability, and price.
For gaming, compare the exact laptop at the resolution and settings you plan to use. For office work and media playback, either is generally adequate. For demanding sustained rendering or modern high-end games, prioritize a laptop with a discrete GPU instead of expecting either integrated solution to behave like one.
