amdihk32.dll is a 32-bit AMD Radeon component associated with Radeon Settings: Host Service. The safest repair is normally to reinstall the correct AMD graphics driver, not to copy a DLL from a download site.

Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error began after a Radeon update, crash, black screen, or failed uninstall: perform a clean AMD driver reinstall.
- You recently installed a driver for the wrong GPU, Windows version, laptop model, or architecture: remove it and install the exact AMD or computer-manufacturer package.
- The file was quarantined by antivirus: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- Other Windows files are also failing: run DISM followed by System File Checker.
- The problem started immediately after a driver change: try System Restore.
- Only one game or application reports the error: repair the Radeon driver first, then use that application’s Verify or Repair files feature.
What is amdihk32.dll
amdihk32.dll is part of AMD Radeon graphics software. Available metadata identifies it with Radeon Settings: Host Service, and AMD distributes the file within its driver packages.
It is not a Windows core DLL, a generic game file, or a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ is therefore not the normal solution.

The file is 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit driver component can legitimately appear in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a Windows DriverStore location. Windows uses architecture-specific redirection and driver installation rules, so the folder alone does not prove that a file is wrong.
A listed build may show version 1.0.0.0 and a size of about 0.1 MB, but driver packages can contain different builds. Do not use one version or file size as a universal authenticity test.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct AMD driver
This is the most likely fix for a missing or damaged amdihk32.dll.
Identify the graphics device
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the complete AMD Radeon or Ryzen graphics model.
- Right-click the device, select Properties, and open the Driver tab.
- Note whether Windows reports a device error.
You can also press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter. Open the Display tab to identify the graphics adapter.
For a laptop or all-in-one computer, record the exact model as well. Laptop manufacturers sometimes customize power management, display switching, hotkeys, and graphics behavior. If the generic AMD package causes problems, use the graphics driver supplied by the laptop manufacturer.
Install the official package
- Go to AMD’s official Drivers and Support page.
- Use automatic detection or select the exact Radeon GPU manually.
- Choose the package matching your Windows installation.
- Download the installer before removing the existing driver.
- Close Radeon Software and other graphics-heavy applications.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Select Additional Options when shown.
- Choose Factory Reset if the installer offers it.
- Continue the installation and restart Windows.
AMD’s Factory Reset option removes previous AMD Software versions and temporarily pauses Windows Update during installation. After restarting, open Radeon Software and launch the application that produced the error.
Check the result
The repair worked if:
- Radeon Software opens without the DLL message.
- Device Manager shows the AMD adapter without a warning icon.
- The original game or application starts.
- The error does not return after another restart.
If the installer fails, reports that older AMD components cannot be removed, or leaves the same error behind, use the clean-removal procedure below.
Manually hunting through hardware models, driver branches, and old packages can be tedious, especially when several devices have stale drivers. It is optional, and the exact AMD or OEM package remains the appropriate source for this Radeon file.
Fix 2: Clean the old AMD installation
Use AMD Cleanup Utility when a normal reinstall does not work or when an interrupted update left mixed AMD files behind.
Before cleanup
- Download the correct AMD or OEM graphics driver first.
- Save your work and close running applications.
- Temporarily disconnect from the internet if Windows repeatedly installs a different display driver during setup.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support documentation.
The utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and related software. AMD recommends using it in Safe Mode and creates a restore point before cleanup.

Run AMD Cleanup Utility
- Run
amdcleanuputility.exe. - Accept the prompt to restart into Safe Mode.
- Confirm that you want to remove the AMD graphics software.
- Allow the cleanup to finish.
- Do not interrupt the process if the screen flickers or briefly goes blank.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Run the AMD driver installer downloaded earlier.
- Select Factory Reset if available.
- Restart again.
- Reconnect the internet.
Cleanup can take several minutes. The restore point allows you to reverse the cleanup if necessary.
If the new installation still fails, check Device Manager for a display-adapter error and try the computer manufacturer’s driver, particularly on a laptop. AMD’s generic driver may not include every system-specific feature required by an OEM design.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components
SFC is not normally the primary repair for amdihk32.dll because this is an AMD driver file rather than a protected Windows component. Use these commands when Windows reports broader corruption, the installer cannot complete, or other system files are also malfunctioning.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses, while SFC checks and repairs protected system files.
Repeat the AMD driver installation after restarting. If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, test Windows and Radeon Software again. If it says it could not repair some files, review the result, install pending Windows updates, and repeat the clean AMD installation rather than copying amdihk32.dll manually.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may remove or quarantine a legitimate AMD file, but the filename alone is not enough reason to restore it.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
amdihk32.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its original path and detection details.
- Run a current scan before restoring the file.
- Restore or allow it only when the original location, AMD association, digital signature, and scan results are consistent.
Do not restore a copy found in a Downloads folder, game directory, temporary folder, or other arbitrary location merely because it has the right filename. Microsoft warns that Defender may detect a restored file again. If the file is suspicious or unsigned, remove it and reinstall the driver from AMD or the computer manufacturer.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a bad update
System Restore is useful when the error started immediately after a Radeon driver update and a clean reinstall is not possible.

rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the driver change.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. Afterward, prevent the same broken package from returning by installing the correct AMD or OEM driver.

Fix 6: Check Device Manager and Windows Update
A damaged driver can leave the display adapter partly functional while Radeon background components fail.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open Driver and check the provider and installed driver details.
- Select Update Driver only if you already know Windows has a suitable driver.
- Restart after any change.
Also open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates. Restart until Windows reports that no further restart is required, then install the AMD package again.
If Device Manager shows a hardware error after repeated clean installations, the problem may involve Windows, firmware, storage corruption, unstable hardware, or the graphics device itself. The DLL message by itself cannot distinguish among those causes.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download websites can provide malware, the wrong build, the wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 may suppress one message while leaving the damaged AMD installation untouched.
Use the official AMD driver package or the computer manufacturer’s driver instead. The installer places the DLL alongside the related Radeon components and uses the correct package structure.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Radeon host or runtime component is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL.
Running commands such as these is not a repair:
regsvr32 amdihk32.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32amdihk32.dll
They may produce an entry-point error and do not rebuild the AMD driver. Use the AMD installer or Cleanup Utility instead.

Do not install Visual C++ by default
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages provide Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. They are relevant when an error names files such as VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or ucrtbase.
They are not a replacement for an AMD Radeon component. Install them only when the actual application error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency.

Windows Features are not the normal fix
Turning Windows Features on or off does not restore an AMD driver component. Do not enable legacy features such as .NET Framework or older media components solely because amdihk32.dll is missing. Use Windows Features only when the application reports a separate requirement for a specific Windows component.
Verify the repair
After reinstalling the driver:
- Restart Windows once more.
- Open Radeon Software.
- Check Device Manager for warning icons.
- Start the affected application.
- Test after a full shutdown and power-on, not only a restart.
- If one game still fails, use its launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking option.
- Check AMD installer logs if the installation reports an error.
If the same error returns after a clean AMD and OEM installation, check for pending Windows updates, disk errors, graphics-device problems, BIOS or firmware issues, and recurring antivirus detections. Repeated failure does not prove that one universal cause is responsible.

Is amdihk32.dll a legitimate file?
It is a legitimate AMD Radeon component when it is installed as part of an AMD graphics package and has a consistent path and valid AMD signature. The filename alone does not authenticate every copy.
Is amdihk32.dll a 32-bit file?
Yes. A 32-bit AMD DLL can still appear in System32 on 64-bit Windows because Windows uses architecture-specific installation and redirection rules.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Install the complete AMD or OEM graphics driver. Manual copying can mix incompatible files and does not repair the driver registration, services, or dependencies.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Not normally. This file belongs to Radeon software. Use Visual C++ only when the error specifically names a Microsoft runtime file.

Should I register it with regsvr32?
No, not as a general fix. regsvr32 applies to self-registering DLLs, and registering a Radeon host component does not restore a damaged driver installation.
What if Windows Defender quarantined it?
Inspect Protection history, verify the original path and AMD signature, scan the system, and restore the file only when the detection is confidently a false positive. Otherwise remove the suspect copy and reinstall the driver from an official source.
What is the safest fix after an interrupted AMD update?
Download the correct driver, run AMD Cleanup Utility in Safe Mode, restart, install the downloaded package, and test Radeon Software. For laptops, use the OEM package if the generic AMD driver remains incompatible.
