1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows may show “pshed.dll is missing from your computer,” “pshed.dll was not found,” or “pshed.dll is missing or corrupt.” If pshed.dll appears in a blue-screen report, the problem is usually different: Windows may be reporting a hardware failure through the file rather than failing to load the file itself.
The 60-second answer
pshed.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Platform-Specific Hardware Error Driver. It belongs to Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA), which collects hardware-error information and communicates with platform firmware.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website, copy it from another PC, or run regsvr32 pshed.dll. Those actions can introduce the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or malware, and they do not repair the Windows component store.

Use this order:
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then SFC from an administrator Command Prompt.
- Check Microsoft Defender Protection History.
- Use System Restore or Windows Recovery Environment if the problem began after a change or Windows will not boot.
- If the symptom is a blue screen with
WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERRORor0x124, investigate hardware, firmware, temperatures, memory, and drivers instead of replacing the DLL.
What is pshed.dll?
Microsoft identifies Pshed.dll as the Platform-Specific Hardware Error Driver. It is part of WHEA, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, game library, or ordinary application dependency. PSHED provides an abstraction between Windows and platform-specific hardware-error reporting, including information supplied by firmware. See Microsoft’s PSHED architecture documentation.

The expected Windows location is:
%SystemRoot%System32Pshed.dll
On a normal Windows installation, that usually resolves to C:WindowsSystem32Pshed.dll. The exact file version and size depend on the Windows edition, processor architecture, servicing level, and installed build. There is no single universal size or checksum that applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer.
A copy in a game, application, Downloads, or temporary folder should not automatically be treated as legitimate. Verify the path and publisher before trusting it.
Why Windows reports the file as missing or corrupt
A missing-file message can result from:
- Corrupted Windows system files
- An interrupted update or servicing operation
- Boot-volume or broader Windows corruption
- Antivirus quarantine
- An unauthorized modification or malware
- A misleading application-loader message caused by damaged Windows files
A boot error involving PSHED.dll is different from an application that refuses to start. Microsoft has documented a Windows boot case where PSHED was reported as missing or corrupt alongside error 0xc000007b; in that situation, reinstalling a game or copying a DLL into its folder is not the appropriate repair.
Fix 1: Update Windows and restart
Install pending updates before repairing system files. Updates can replace damaged components and correct servicing problems.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart Windows, even if the update process does not specifically require it.
- Try the affected program again, or check whether the boot error has changed.
Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance provides the current update path for supported Windows versions.
Also check optional hardware-driver updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if the category is present.
- Install an appropriate update and restart.
Optional drivers are not always the newest driver available from the computer or component manufacturer. For BIOS, chipset, storage, graphics, and firmware updates, use the support page for the PC or motherboard model and confirm that the package matches your Windows architecture.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a genuinely missing or damaged pshed.dll. Microsoft recommends repairing the component store with DISM before running System File Checker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run DISM first
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
When DISM completes successfully, continue with SFC:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer.

SFC normally reports one of these outcomes:
- Did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files.
- Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, review the CBS log, and move to System Restore or a repair reinstall if the issue remains.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Restart and try again from an administrator Command Prompt, or run the repair from Windows Recovery Environment.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for servicing to use it.
Running SFC repeatedly without addressing a failed component-store repair usually does not add useful information.
If you prefer not to hunt through CBS logs or repeat DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it found, while repair features are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
Defender may quarantine a system file, or a detection may be associated with a suspicious copy outside the Windows directory.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
Pshed.dllor the path shown in the alert. - Check the file location, detection name, and publisher before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is pshed.dll. Restore it only when the path, Microsoft signature, and detection context confirm that it is the genuine Windows component. If the file was in an application folder or Defender identifies it as malicious, leave it quarantined and repair Windows instead.

Run a full scan if the file was modified unexpectedly. Use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is suspected and Windows remains unstable. Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance explains the available scan options.
Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the error began after a driver installation, update, utility, BIOS-related change, or other system modification.
From Windows:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Click Next, review the affected programs, and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but back up important data first.

If Windows will not start, enter Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup during boot or by using official installation media. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance covers the recovery path.
Fix 5: Repair Windows without removing apps
On supported Windows 11 installations, use the repair reinstall option:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, personal files, and settings where the option is available.
If Windows cannot boot or the option is missing, create or use official Windows installation media. Start setup and select the option to keep personal files and apps when it is offered. Back up your data first. Microsoft documents this process in its guide to reinstalling Windows with installation media.

Fix 6: Update or roll back hardware drivers
A driver is more relevant when the error accompanies a blue screen, WHEA event, display failure, storage problem, or a recent hardware change. It is not a reason to download pshed.dll manually.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the recent problem, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Processors, System devices, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a recently installed driver:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test again.
For a clean reinstall, download the driver only from the PC, motherboard, or device manufacturer. In Device Manager, use Uninstall device, restart, and then install the verified package. Do not delete drivers indiscriminately, particularly storage or chipset drivers.
Manually identifying which of many drivers is stale can take time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation features are handled by the full version. It is optional, and manufacturer drivers remain the safer choice for BIOS, chipset, storage, and firmware packages.

0x124 - WHEA-Logger events in Event Viewer
- Repeated crashes under load
- Recent BIOS, firmware, driver, overclock, or undervolt changes
Microsoft describes 0x124 as a fatal hardware error. Common areas to investigate include the processor, memory, motherboard, PCIe devices, power delivery, firmware, cooling, and occasionally a driver. It does not identify one failed component by itself. Start with Microsoft’s Bug Check 0x124 documentation.
Use this order:
- Return BIOS settings to defaults and disable overclocking or undervolting.
- Install the correct BIOS and OEM chipset updates.
- Check CPU and GPU temperatures under normal use.
- Run the computer manufacturer’s hardware diagnostics.
- Test memory using Windows Memory Diagnostic or the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool.
- Reseat or test PCIe devices where appropriate.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System for WHEA-Logger events.
- Check minidumps or crash dumps for the WHEA record and bug-check parameters.
If crashes continue after Windows repair, stop treating PSHED.dll as the root cause. The dump, WHEA record, hardware tests, temperatures, and recent configuration changes matter more than the filename shown in the report.

Why regsvr32 does not fix pshed.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a tool for registering applicable DLLs as command components.
PSHED is a Windows kernel component, not an ordinary COM or application DLL. Therefore this command is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 pshed.dll
A registration error does not repair the component. Use DISM and SFC for Windows file corruption, or Windows Recovery Environment when the operating system cannot boot.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
Do not choose a replacement based only on the name or a claimed file size. Windows maintains architecture-specific system components, and directory behavior differs between 32-bit and 64-bit installations. The correct file is supplied by the installed Windows build.
To check the architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
Repair the installed Windows image rather than copying a file between computers. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a game is relevant only when the exact error identifies a separate runtime or application file. Those packages do not normally provide PSHED.
FAQ
Is pshed.dll safe?
The genuine Microsoft component in the Windows system directory is legitimate. Verify its path, digital signature, and Defender context rather than judging safety from the filename alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I download pshed.dll?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware or the wrong architecture and usually leave the underlying Windows corruption unresolved. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official installation media.
Why does a game say pshed.dll is missing?
The message may reflect damaged Windows files or a loader failure rather than a file that the game should install. Repair Windows first. Do not place a replacement in the game folder.
Is PSHED the cause of a WHEA crash?
Not necessarily. PSHED commonly appears because Windows is reporting a hardware error through WHEA. A 0x124 crash requires hardware, firmware, thermal, memory, processor, PCIe, and driver investigation.
What should I provide when asking for help?
Include the Windows edition and build, exact error wording, whether Windows boots, any bug-check code, recent BIOS or driver changes, overclocking or undervolting, and the results of hardware diagnostics. If available, include the relevant WHEA-Logger event and crash-dump details.
