“The program can’t start because amdocl64.dll is missing from your computer” and “The code execution cannot proceed because amdocl64.dll was not found” are common versions of this failure. The amdocl64.dll error usually means the AMD OpenCL component installed with your graphics driver is missing, damaged, incompatible, or blocked by another problem.
The 60-second answer
amdocl64.dll is the 64-bit AMD OpenCL runtime used by some games and applications for GPU-accelerated computing. It is not a Windows system file, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET file.

The safest repair is:
- Identify your AMD Radeon GPU or Ryzen processor with Radeon Graphics.
- Download the compatible driver from AMD’s official Drivers and Support page.
- If the installation is damaged or several driver versions have been used, run AMD Cleanup Utility, preferably in Safe Mode.
- Reinstall the correct AMD Software package.
- Repair or verify the affected game or application.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random DLL website. A copied file can have the wrong architecture, the wrong driver version, missing dependencies, or malware.
What is amdocl64.dll?
amdocl64.dll is a 64-bit AMD OpenCL runtime library. It has historically been described as part of the AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing OpenCL 2.0 Runtime.

OpenCL allows compatible programs to use a GPU for computing tasks. Image and video software, scientific applications, renderers, and some games may call the AMD OpenCL runtime when they start or when a particular feature is used.
The file normally arrives as part of AMD graphics software or a graphics driver package. Depending on the driver generation and application, it may be found in an AMD driver directory, the Windows Driver Store, C:WindowsSystem32, or the application’s own directory. Windows decides which copy to load using its DLL search rules.
The file information sometimes shown for an older copy is 64-bit version 21.19.384.0, with a size of approximately 57.1 MB. That is historical metadata, not a version that every current system should use. AMD packages contain different runtime versions for different GPU generations.

Fix 1: Clean-reinstall the AMD graphics driver
This is the best first fix when multiple applications report the error, the problem started after a GPU swap or driver update, or the AMD installation has been modified several times.
Identify the installed AMD hardware
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact AMD Radeon model.
- If the computer uses an AMD Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon Graphics, record that processor model too.
- If an adapter has a warning icon, double-click it and read the device status.
You can also press Windows key + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter. Look under Components > Display for additional graphics information.
Download the correct driver
Go to AMD’s official Drivers and Support page. Select the exact GPU or processor, then download the applicable AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition package or the final compatible package for an older product.
On a laptop or all-in-one computer, check the manufacturer’s support page first. Laptop vendors may customize graphics switching, power management, display output, or sleep behavior. If AMD’s generic package causes new problems, use the computer manufacturer’s driver instead.

- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
For an older GPU, do not force the newest Adrenalin release. Use the final driver AMD lists as compatible with that product.
Use AMD Cleanup Utility when the installation is corrupted
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support site.
- Save your work and close open applications.
- Run the utility.
- Accept the recommended restart into Safe Mode when prompted.
- Allow the cleanup to finish. The screen may flicker while display components are removed.
- Restart Windows when the utility asks you to.
- Run the AMD driver installer you downloaded.
- Choose the normal installation option unless you have a specific reason to customize it.
- Restart Windows again.
Now launch the affected application. A successful repair usually means the application starts without the DLL message and GPU-accelerated features work normally.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale or mismatched drivers. Its free scan shows what it finds, while the repair or driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional, and the AMD or computer manufacturer’s package remains the preferred source for this specific runtime.
Try Device Manager rollback if the problem began after an update
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the AMD adapter.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Choose a reason and select Yes.
- Restart Windows.
Rollback is useful when the error appeared immediately after a driver update. If the button is unavailable, use AMD Cleanup Utility and install a known-compatible package instead.

Fix 2: Repair the affected application or game
If only one program reports amdocl64.dll, the application may have lost a bundled dependency or may be loading an incorrect copy from its own folder.
Repair a Windows-installed application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use Reset where appropriate. Reset can remove the application’s local settings. For a traditional desktop program, uninstall it from Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the software vendor’s trusted installer.
For a game launcher, use its Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or similarly named file-checking command. This replaces damaged application files without requiring you to copy a DLL manually.
If the game itself installed the runtime in its application directory, reinstalling that game may be the definitive fix. Reinstalling the AMD driver alone will not repair every application-specific installation.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
amdocl64.dll is the 64-bit AMD OpenCL runtime. A 64-bit application normally needs the 64-bit component, while a 32-bit application may require a 32-bit AMD OpenCL library.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, to experiment. Those folders have specific Windows meanings, and a mismatched file can create more confusing loader errors.
If the error appeared after installing an older game or utility:
- Check whether the program provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
- Install the build intended for your application and Windows configuration.
- Reinstall the compatible AMD driver package.
- Test the program again.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message is often an architecture or compatibility problem rather than proof that the filename is invalid.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate driver file after an update or after a detection mistake.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
amdocl64.dllor AMD display software. - Expand the entry and inspect its path and detection details.
Do not restore the file blindly. A genuine copy should have a valid digital signature from Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and should normally be located in an AMD driver or system location. An unsigned copy in a temporary folder, Downloads folder, crack directory, or unexpected user-profile location deserves investigation.
If the file was quarantined and its origin is unclear, leave it quarantined, scan the computer, and reinstall the AMD driver from the official source. Do not casually disable antivirus protection.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the error appeared alongside broader Windows problems, such as failed updates, damaged built-in applications, or several unrelated system errors. They are not a guaranteed replacement for a third-party AMD runtime.
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the application. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run Windows Update, restart, and repeat the checks later.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of hunting through repeated SFC and DISM results easier. Its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the AMD driver or the affected application.
Do not expect SFC to restore amdocl64.dll simply because it is a DLL. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this file normally belongs to AMD software.
Fix 6: Use System Restore for a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, cleanup operation, or major software change and a restore point exists.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove drivers and applications installed after the selected restore point. If malware is suspected, do not rely on System Restore alone. Scan the computer and use Windows recovery options if necessary.
Why regsvr32 is usually not the answer
Do not automatically run:
regsvr32 amdocl64.dll
Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM components. An AMD OpenCL runtime is not ordinarily installed by manually registering it this way.
The command may produce an entry-point error, and even if it appears to run, it does not install the correct AMD driver, restore dependencies, or repair OpenCL configuration. Reinstall the driver package instead.

- Leave required dependencies missing.
- Cause Windows to load an older copy first.
- Hide the actual driver or application problem.
- Create an unsafe DLL search path.
The safe sources are the AMD driver package for your exact hardware, the computer manufacturer’s driver for a laptop or all-in-one, and the affected application’s own repair or reinstall process.
If the error still remains
If the clean driver installation did not help:
- Note which exact application calls
amdocl64.dll. - Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Inspect the application’s crash log or Windows Event Viewer.
- Open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start and selecting it.
- Check Windows Logs > Application for an error at the time of the crash.
- Verify the digital signature and location of every copy of
amdocl64.dllyou find. - Consider that the named DLL may be present while one of its dependent modules is missing.
- If you have multiple AMD GPUs, confirm that the application is using the intended adapter.
- Avoid mixing an OEM driver and a generic AMD driver unless the manufacturer’s instructions require it.
There is no Windows Features setting that installs this AMD runtime. The dependable path is to match the application architecture, clean incompatible AMD leftovers, and reinstall the driver branch intended for the installed hardware.
FAQ
Is amdocl64.dll a Microsoft file?
No. It is an AMD OpenCL runtime component delivered with AMD graphics software or drivers.
Is amdocl64.dll safe?
A genuine copy should normally be digitally signed by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and located in an AMD driver or system location. An unsigned copy in a temporary or unexpected folder should be investigated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I download amdocl64.dll separately?
No. A standalone copy may be malicious, incomplete, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the installed driver. Repair the AMD driver or the application that needs it.
Why does the file exist but the program still fail?
The application may be loading another copy, the file may be the wrong version, a dependency may be missing, or the OpenCL installation may be damaged.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. Those packages are different components. Begin with AMD driver repair and application verification unless the error identifies a separate missing dependency.
What changes on laptops?
Use the laptop manufacturer’s graphics driver if AMD’s generic package causes problems with switchable graphics, displays, power management, or sleep behavior.
What if I replaced my GPU?
Clean the old AMD installation, restart, and install the package matching the new GPU. Do not reuse a DLL copied from the previous graphics card or another computer.
