AMD’s 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX reached roughly 5.50 GHz across all cores in an extreme Cinebench run cooled with liquid nitrogen (LN2). It was an overclocking benchmark achievement—not a normal boost mode, a guaranteed result, or a practical 24/7 workstation setting.

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX reached roughly 5.50 GHz across all 96 cores in an extreme Cinebench run cooled with liquid nitrogen (LN2). That is far above the processor’s published operating range, but it was not a normal boost mode, a guaranteed overclock, or a practical 24/7 workstation setting.

The headline figure also needs some precision. A benchmark table rounds one 7995WX result to 5.50 GHz, while an HWBOT submission from Sampson recorded 5,550.07 MHz and a separate run by Elmor reached 6,000 MHz on all cores. These were different overclocking attempts under specialized cooling, so the numbers describe separate records rather than a contradiction.

What the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX achieved

The most clearly documented 5.55 GHz result came from Sampson’s Cinebench R23 submission on November 20, 2023. HWBOT records a score of 186,756 points at 5,550.07 MHz, with liquid nitrogen listed as the CPU cooling method.

One day later, Elmor submitted a still more extreme result: 201,501 Cinebench R23 points at 6,000 MHz. That run also used LN2. Tom’s Hardware reported the progression from approximately 4.8 GHz with air cooling to substantially higher clocks with liquid cooling and then to 5.55 GHz and 6.0 GHz under liquid nitrogen.

For context, the same coverage put a stock 7995WX result at approximately 100,000 Cinebench R23 points. The comparison illustrates the performance potential of pushing 96 cores simultaneously, but it is not a controlled stock-versus-overclocked product review. The test conditions, voltage, cooling, motherboard settings, memory configuration, and individual chip all matter.

The processor behind the record

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX is a Zen 4 workstation processor with:

Specification Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX
Cores and threads 96 cores, 192 threads
Base frequency 2.5 GHz
Maximum published boost Up to 5.1 GHz
Total cache 480 MB
Configured TDP 350 W
Architecture Zen 4
Platform sTR5

That makes the reported 5.50 GHz all-core result especially notable. AMD’s 5.1 GHz figure is a maximum boost specification under defined conditions; it does not mean that all 96 cores normally operate at 5.1 GHz simultaneously. The LN2 results went beyond AMD’s published specifications and were created specifically for benchmark competition.

The 7995WX reaches its 96-core count through a chiplet design containing six Core Complex Dies (CCDs), twelve Core Complexes (CCX units), and 96 Zen 4 cores in total. Raising the frequency of every core at once is much more demanding than overclocking a small desktop processor or briefly boosting one favored core.

Readers looking for the exact chip discussed here can research the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX, but availability, pricing, seller status, and platform requirements should be checked at the time of purchase. A retail listing should not be interpreted as evidence that the listed processor will reproduce the record clocks.

Why the headline says 5.50 GHz when the records say 5.55 and 6.00 GHz

There are three relevant numbers:

  • 5.50 GHz: a rounded frequency shown for 7995WX Cinebench R20 and R23 entries in a benchmark table.
  • 5,550.07 MHz: Sampson’s more precise HWBOT Cinebench R23 submission, equivalent to about 5.55 GHz.
  • 6,000 MHz: Elmor’s separate HWBOT Cinebench R23 submission at 6.0 GHz.

The safest summary is that the 7995WX was benchmarked at approximately 5.50 GHz on all cores, with a contemporaneous run reaching 5.55 GHz and another reaching 6.0 GHz. The 5.50 GHz title is therefore a rounded benchmark-clock description—not the processor’s normal frequency and not necessarily the highest frequency ever recorded for the model.

What equipment was used?

HWBOT’s submissions show how different these attempts were from an ordinary workstation build.

  • Sampson’s 5,550.07 MHz run: ASRock TRX50 WS motherboard, ASUS ROG Thor 1500 W power supply, and an ElmorLabs Volcano-X LN2 container.
  • Elmor’s 6,000 MHz run: ASUS Pro WS TRX50-Sage WiFi motherboard, Enermax Revolution D.F. 1200 W power supply, and G.Skill Zeta R5 DDR5 memory.

Those components document the platforms used for the submissions; they are not a universal shopping list for a Threadripper PRO workstation. A reader researching a TRX50 motherboard for Threadripper PRO should verify processor support, firmware requirements, memory compatibility, and the board manufacturer’s qualified-vendor list before buying.

WRX90 versus TRX50

AMD positions WRX90 as the workstation-focused chipset for Threadripper PRO. It supports eight-channel DDR5-5200 RDIMM memory, up to 2 TB of memory, and up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

  • LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
  • PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
  • SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
  • INCLUDES MX CLEANER: Thoroughly removes old thermal paste and prepares contact surfaces for optimal performance before applying new thermal compound.

TRX50 is a different platform option that supports Threadripper 7000 processors and selected Threadripper PRO 7000 models. It provides four-channel memory support and enables overclocking features. The documented record attempts used TRX50 motherboards, but that does not make TRX50 the right choice for every professional workload. Memory capacity, channel count, validated expansion cards, remote-management needs, and workstation certification can matter more than overclocking access.

For a production workstation, choose DDR5 RDIMM for Threadripper PRO based on the motherboard’s supported capacity, speed, rank, and QVL rather than copying a competitive benchmark configuration. G.Skill Zeta R5 memory appears in the 6.0 GHz submission, but that appearance is evidence of what one test system used—not a claim that it is required or optimal for all 7995WX systems.

Why liquid nitrogen enables such high clocks

Overclocking increases frequency and often requires additional voltage. Both changes can sharply increase heat output. Conventional air cooling and closed-loop liquid cooling can remove substantial heat, but they cannot match the extremely low temperatures available from LN2 in a carefully controlled competitive setup.

Lower temperatures can give a processor more electrical and frequency headroom, allowing an experienced overclocker to attempt clocks that would quickly become unstable under ordinary cooling. LN2 does not turn the 7995WX into a more efficient production CPU, however. It changes the short-term thermal conditions for a benchmark run.

A 96-core processor also creates an unusually large power and heat challenge. A 1500 W or 1200 W supply appearing in the documented systems reflects the demands of extreme testing, not a blanket recommendation for every stock 7995WX workstation. PSU sizing should account for the complete system, sustained workload, transient behavior, GPU count, storage, and manufacturer guidance.

What the result does—and does not—prove

It does demonstrate

  • The 7995WX’s Zen 4 silicon and sTR5 platform had substantial frequency headroom under extreme conditions.
  • All 96 cores could be driven at approximately 5.5 GHz in a successful benchmark attempt.
  • A separate system reached 6.0 GHz and produced a 201,501-point Cinebench R23 submission.
  • The 7995WX can deliver extraordinary multi-core benchmark throughput when frequency, voltage, cooling, and system configuration are optimized for a short competitive run.

It does not demonstrate

  • That every 7995WX can reach 5.5 or 6.0 GHz.
  • That 5.50 GHz is a normal all-core boost speed.
  • That the processor can sustain those clocks for rendering, compiling, simulation, or other long workloads.
  • That the configuration is suitable for 24/7 operation.
  • That it is efficient, quiet, reliable, or economical compared with a stock workstation.
  • That the result is a conventional product-performance comparison against other CPUs.

Safety, condensation, and warranty concerns

LN2 overclocking is specialist work, not an ordinary PC-building upgrade. It involves cryogenic hazards, insulation and condensation control, high electrical loads, rapid temperature changes, and a real possibility of destroying the processor, motherboard, memory, or storage. This article intentionally does not provide a step-by-step LN2 procedure.

AMD warns that operating outside published specifications, including overclocking or undervolting, can create hardware failure, reduced performance, data loss, data corruption, and security-related risks. It may also void applicable warranty coverage. Anyone considering this type of testing needs appropriate cryogenic training, electrical and condensation safeguards, expendable hardware, and a willingness to accept that the system may not survive.

For most owners, the sensible target is a stable, validated workstation configuration with adequate cooling and error-checked memory—not a screenshot-worthy peak frequency.

Is the 7995WX still AMD’s current flagship?

The runs took place on November 20–21, 2023, when the Threadripper PRO 7995WX was the flagship of AMD’s 7000 WX-Series generation. AMD’s newer product materials now also cover Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series processors, so the 7995WX should be described as the 7000-generation flagship rather than AMD’s current flagship without a date or generation qualifier.

Professional buyers who want a complete system can compare a Threadripper PRO workstation from a supported OEM or system integrator, including channels associated with Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, and other workstation partners. That route is more relevant to warranty, support, validation, and deployment than attempting to duplicate a record-setting LN2 bench setup.
