A black triple-fan AMD graphics-card design was purportedly revealed in a December 2024 Reddit advertisement, months before the Radeon RX 9070 XT officially launched. It looked like a new AMD reference cooler—but it never became a normal retail reference card.

The short answer

A black, triple-fan AMD graphics-card design was purportedly revealed in an AMD Reddit advertisement in December 2024 and was widely interpreted as the reference-style cooler for the then-unannounced Radeon RX 9070 XT. The render showed a distinctive black shroud, rounded corners, circular fans, silver X-like accents and an apparently illuminated Radeon logo.

However, the image was not confirmation that AMD would sell that card. The Radeon RX 9070 XT became a real retail product when AMD announced the RX 9000 series on February 28, 2025, but AMD launched it through board partners rather than offering the pictured black reference design as a normal AMD-built retail card. In practical terms, the GPU is real; the commonly shared AMD reference-style cooler is not a standard product buyers can simply order.

What the purported RX 9070 XT reference design looked like

The image associated with the reveal showed a mostly black graphics card with a triple-fan cooler. The fans appeared more circular than those on AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX reference coolers. The shroud had four straight sides with rounded corners, while grille-like detailing flanked the center fan.

Silver trim created an X-like visual motif across the front of the cooler. An AMD Radeon logo appeared to be illuminated along the card’s upper edge. Overall, the design looked related to AMD’s previous high-end reference coolers, but with a softer, more rounded and less angular appearance.

Those are observations about a render—not verified specifications. The image cannot establish the card’s final dimensions, heatsink construction, PCB, connector placement, clock speeds, power limit, temperatures or noise level. Nor does the presence of an AMD-style render prove that the design was intended for broad retail sale.

How the image surfaced

Tom’s Hardware reported on December 23, 2024 that AMD had apparently exposed the design in a Reddit advertisement. Reporting from Videocardz and the surrounding RDNA 4 leak cycle led to the interpretation that the card was the Radeon RX 9070 XT reference design.

That interpretation became more plausible when AMD later confirmed the RX 9000 branding and RDNA 4 generation. But two separate questions were involved:

  • Was the underlying GPU family real? Yes. AMD officially announced the Radeon RX 9000 series in February 2025.
  • Would AMD sell the pictured cooler as a normal reference card? No evidence supports that conclusion. AMD’s launch materials ultimately pointed buyers toward board-partner cards.

This distinction matters because early coverage often treated the render as a confirmed AMD reference product. The safer description is purported reference render, reference-style design or alleged AMD reference cooler.

AMD’s actual Radeon RX 9070 XT specifications

The shipping Radeon RX 9070 XT is an RDNA 4-based desktop GPU in AMD’s Radeon RX 9000 series. AMD’s official launch material listed these specifications:

Specification Radeon RX 9070 XT
Architecture AMD RDNA 4
Compute units 64
Memory 16 GB GDDR6
Memory interface 256-bit
Infinity Cache 64 MB
Game clock 2.4 GHz / 2,400 MHz
Boost clock Up to 3.0 GHz in AMD’s launch announcement; up to 2,970 MHz on the current product page
Total board power 304 W
Auxiliary power Two 8-pin power connectors on AMD’s listed specification
Launch price $599 U.S. suggested price
Availability Board-partner cards beginning March 6, 2025

The slight difference between the launch announcement’s “up to 3.0 GHz” and the product page’s 2,970 MHz is best treated as a difference in page wording or version context, not as evidence of two different GPUs. Partner cards can have their own factory-overclocked specifications.

AMD positions the RX 9070 XT for gaming with an emphasis on 4K-class performance, ray tracing and AI acceleration. Any performance numbers quoted from AMD’s launch material should be understood as AMD’s own test results on specified systems and drivers, rather than independent benchmark results that apply to every game or configuration.

The reference card did not become a normal retail product

The status became clearer before launch. TechPowerUp reported on February 24, 2025 that AMD marketing material placed an “artistic render: not available for purchase” disclaimer beneath a triple-fan reference-style image. Its report concluded that the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT launched without AMD-built MBA—Made by AMD—reference models.

That means the image can be considered an AMD reference-style industrial design or marketing render, but not a conventional retail reference card comparable to a product buyers could expect to find in stores. AMD left retail production to its board partners.

A later VideoCardz report discussed an RX 9070 XT described as an MBA or OEM-style card obtained through the Chinese Chiphell community. Photographs showed a black, approximately 2.5-slot, triple-fan design and teardown material. That is useful evidence that physical unreleased or OEM-related examples existed, but it does not establish broad retail availability, an official AMD consumer sales channel or a standard “Founders Edition”-style product.

What buyers can actually purchase

If you want the GPU represented by the story, search for a Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card from a board partner—not for an “AMD reference RX 9070 XT.” AMD named Acer, ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, Vastarmor, XFX and Yeston as launch partners.

Every partner model should be evaluated on its own specifications. A partner card may differ from the render in:

  • cooler thickness and total slot occupancy;
  • overall length and height;
  • fan arrangement and heatsink design;
  • power-connector orientation and cable clearance;
  • game and boost clocks;
  • BIOS or performance modes;
  • fan noise and thermal behavior; and
  • warranty terms and local availability.

Do not assume that a black triple-fan card is the AMD render, or that a partner card with a similar appearance has the same PCB or cooler. Check the individual manufacturer’s product page and independent reviews before buying. Prices and inventory are also volatile, so a current model-by-model retail recommendation requires a live availability check.

How to interpret the “reference design” claim

“Reference design” can describe several different things in GPU coverage: an engineering design, an AMD-produced board specification, a marketing render, an MBA sample, or a card sold directly through ordinary retail channels. Those are not interchangeable.

  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

For this RX 9070 XT story, the evidence supports the following wording:

  • Supported: AMD appeared to show a black triple-fan reference-style design in a Reddit advertisement.
  • Supported: The design was associated with the RX 9070 XT before AMD’s formal announcement.
  • Supported: Physical MBA/OEM-style examples were later reported to exist.
  • Not established: That AMD sold the rendered design widely to consumers.
  • Not established: That all RX 9070 XT cards use the render’s cooler, dimensions or electrical layout.

The most accurate summary is therefore: the RX 9070 XT reference-style design escaped in a render, but the retail Radeon RX 9070 XT market was supplied by custom board-partner models.

Installing an RX 9070 XT: driver and power considerations

AMD lists support for Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11 and Linux x86-64 on the current RX 9070 XT product page. Before replacing a graphics card, download the appropriate Radeon software or driver from AMD’s official support path, confirm that the power supply has the required connectors and check the exact partner card’s clearance requirements.

After installation, remove or update the previous graphics driver if necessary, install the current driver, restart the system and verify that the card is recognized in the operating system and Radeon software. If the system shows a black screen, crashes under load or reports a driver timeout, check the basics first:

  1. Power down and reseat the card.
  2. Confirm that both required 8-pin connectors are fully inserted and connected with suitable cables.
  3. Check that the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card rather than the motherboard.
  4. Install the current official AMD driver for the operating system.
  5. Undo unstable overclocks and test with the partner card’s default BIOS or performance mode.
  6. Check the case’s GPU length, height and slot clearance against the exact model’s specifications.

Optional third-party maintenance software such as Outbyte Driver Updater may be relevant to Windows users diagnosing device-driver problems because it advertises device scanning, official-source recommendations and backup/restore functionality. It should be treated as an optional troubleshooting tool, not as a replacement for AMD’s own Radeon Software or official driver-download process. For a new GPU, the manufacturer’s driver package remains the most direct starting point.

Why an always-on stream does not justify this GPU by itself

An RX 9070 XT can be useful for local gaming, video production or GPU-accelerated workloads, but it is unnecessary for the specific use case of keeping an always-on YouTube Live stream running from the cloud. StreamNeo describes a cloud service for looping user-owned or licensed recordings continuously without leaving a PC or OBS running.

That architecture removes the need for a local graphics card for that task. A buyer should not purchase an RX 9070 XT solely to run a 24/7 prerecorded stream when a cloud service is handling the encoding and uptime.

Verdict

The alleged reveal was not entirely baseless: AMD did appear to expose a coherent black, triple-fan reference-style design, and the RX 9070 XT itself later launched as a genuine RDNA 4 graphics card. But the render’s retail implication was overstated.

AMD’s February 2025 launch confirmed the RX 9070 XT, its core specifications, $599 suggested price and March 6 availability through board partners. AMD did not provide the pictured black cooler as a normal AMD-built retail reference model. For buyers, the correct target is a well-reviewed RX 9070 XT from a partner such as Sapphire, PowerColor, ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, XFX or another listed manufacturer—not the unavailable reference render.

Frequently Asked Questions

No—not as a normal retail AMD-built card. AMD’s render appeared in marketing, and later reports described an MBA/OEM-style physical example, but AMD launched the RX 9070 XT through board partners. A disclaimer described the reference-style image as an artistic render not available for purchase.

Was the AMD RX 9070 XT reference design officially released?

AMD lists 64 compute units, 16 GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit interface, 64 MB of Infinity Cache, a 2,400 MHz game frequency, up to 2,970 MHz on the current product page, 304 W total board power and two 8-pin auxiliary power connectors. AMD’s launch announcement rounded the boost figure to up to 3.0 GHz.

What are the official RX 9070 XT specifications?

Compare individual board-partner models by current price, cooler size, case clearance, power connectors, clock speeds, warranty and independent noise and thermal reviews. Do not assume that every RX 9070 XT uses the black triple-fan cooler shown in the purported reveal.

Which RX 9070 XT should I buy?

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The black triple-fan card was a purported AMD reference-style RX 9070 XT render, not a normally purchasable AMD reference product. The shipping RX 9070 XT is real, but retail buyers must choose among board-partner designs whose size, clocks, cooling, noise and warranty can differ substantially.
