What high ping means in Genshin Impact
Ping is a round-trip latency measurement: the time it takes data to travel from your device to the game service and back. A higher number means that communication takes longer, so actions may appear delayed. Large ping fluctuations can be especially disruptive because the connection is changing from moment to moment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ping is not the same as:
- Jitter: variation in latency over time.
- Packet loss: data that fails to arrive or must be retransmitted.
- Low FPS: the device failing to render frames quickly enough.
- Freezing or shader stutter: a local device or game-client performance problem that can feel like network lag.
There is no official, universal HoYoverse rule that makes a particular number “high” for every Genshin Impact player. Treat the connection as problematic when ping is consistently elevated for your usual setup, jumps sharply, or coincides with delayed actions, rubber-banding, disconnections, or loading failures. Geography matters: the physical and routed distance between you and the selected game server contributes to latency, regardless of how fast your internet package is for downloads.

First, confirm that the problem is actually ping
- Watch the in-game ping indicator while the problem occurs. Note whether it is high continuously or spikes suddenly.
- Record the approximate time, your platform, server region, internet provider, and whether the problem happens everywhere or only during certain activities.
- Compare the symptom with what you see on screen. Delayed interactions and rubber-banding point toward a connection issue. A low frame rate, frozen animation, blurry or delayed rendering, and general sluggishness can indicate device performance instead.
A game can have both problems at once. For example, a crowded Wi-Fi network may cause ping spikes while an overloaded PC causes frame drops. Test the two symptoms separately rather than assuming every kind of lag has the same fix.
How to fix high ping in Genshin Impact
1. Test another network
This is the fastest way to identify whether your normal Wi-Fi or home network is involved. If you normally play over Wi-Fi, temporarily test mobile data where supported, another trusted Wi-Fi network, or a wired connection. On a laptop, console, or desktop, test Ethernet if your equipment supports it.
Interpret the result carefully:
- Ping improves on another network: investigate your Wi-Fi, router, household traffic, or ISP route.
- Ping is bad on multiple unrelated networks: the issue may be the selected server, the game service, the device, or a broader routing problem.
- Only one device is affected: inspect that device, its background applications, and its network configuration.
HoYoverse recommends comparing networks and trying a cabled connection when investigating connection and disconnection problems. This test is more useful than immediately buying a faster internet plan.

2. Restart the modem and router
Power-cycle the local network equipment, then wait for the connection to return before testing Genshin Impact again. If the issue is specifically worse over Wi-Fi, check whether the router manufacturer has a firmware update. HoYoverse includes router restarting and firmware updates among its recommended connection troubleshooting steps.
Restarting cannot fix server distance or a poor route between your ISP and HoYoverse. It is useful because it can clear a temporary local fault and gives you a clean baseline for the next test.
3. Reduce congestion on the home network
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, game updates, and high-resolution streaming while testing. Disconnect unused devices if practical. Other users and devices can compete for bandwidth or create queues in the router, increasing delay even when a speed test shows a high download rate.

Test while the network is quiet, then test again during the time when the problem normally appears. If ping becomes poor only when another device is uploading or downloading, the cause is likely local congestion or router queueing rather than Genshin’s graphics settings.
4. Disable VPNs, proxies, and network-acceleration tools
Temporarily turn off any VPN, proxy, or third-party network-acceleration application and test again. These services change the route your traffic takes and may add extra hops or instability. HoYoverse recommends disabling VPNs and proxies while diagnosing connection errors.
A VPN is not a guaranteed gaming optimization. It can occasionally produce a better route in a particular location, but it can also increase latency. Treat it as a variable to test, not as a universal cure.
5. Check the selected Genshin Impact server
Genshin Impact offers regional server choices including Asia, Europe, Americas, and TW/HK/MO. A server that is geographically or network-wise distant from you can result in higher latency.
Do not change servers casually if your account contains progress or purchases. HoYoverse states that an account created on one server cannot be transferred or merged into another; progress, characters, and purchases remain tied to the original server. Accessing the account from another physical region does not move its server assignment. Selecting another region may instead open a separate progression environment, so it is not a reversible ping-setting switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Update and repair the game client
Make sure Genshin Impact is fully updated. If high ping occurs together with freezing, loading errors, corrupted resources, or crashes, use the launcher or game client’s available resource-integrity or file-repair check. Client problems do not normally explain a genuinely elevated network measurement, but they can create symptoms that look like lag.

7. Separate network lag from low FPS and device problems
If the ping indicator remains normal while the game stutters, freezes, or renders slowly, work on device performance instead:
- Lower graphics quality and other demanding visual settings.
- Close unnecessary background applications and overlays.
- On PC, update the graphics driver.
- Check whether the device is overheating or reducing performance under sustained load.
- Use the game client’s resource-integrity check when freezing or loading problems accompany the stutter.
HoYoverse’s performance guidance recommends lowering graphics settings, closing background applications, checking file integrity, and updating PC graphics drivers. Its system-requirements guidance also warns that insufficient hardware can cause freezing and other technical problems.
If lowering graphics settings makes the game smoother but the ping number does not change, you have improved rendering performance—not network latency. If ping is high and frame rate is also poor, continue both the network and performance investigations.
Does Ethernet fix high ping in Genshin Impact?
Ethernet can fix or reduce Wi-Fi-related instability, but it cannot fix every cause of high ping. A wired connection avoids wireless interference, weak signal strength, and some forms of Wi-Fi congestion. It is therefore one of the cleanest diagnostic tests for a home-network problem.
Best hardware test: If Wi-Fi is the variable, test Genshin Impact over a wired connection. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is the simplest option for a device with an Ethernet port. It may improve consistency, but it cannot overcome a distant server, poor ISP routing, upstream congestion, or a HoYoverse-side connection problem.
Ethernet is worth testing before buying a premium router or changing your internet plan. If wired and wireless connections perform identically, the Wi-Fi link is probably not the main cause.

What if your laptop has no Ethernet port?
A compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a wired test for many laptops and other devices without an RJ45 port. Verify the connector type, operating-system support, and compatibility with your particular console or device before buying. This is an accessory for enabling the test; it does not guarantee a specific ping reduction, and not every mobile device supports Ethernet adapters.

Download speed and game latency are related only indirectly. Genshin Impact does not necessarily need a faster plan to communicate quickly with the server. Ping depends on the route, distance, congestion, and responsiveness of the network path. A premium router, faster package, or gaming-branded networking product cannot guarantee lower latency to a particular Genshin server.
Networking equipment can still be useful when it improves local reliability, Wi-Fi coverage, or congestion management. Diagnose the local connection first so you know what problem the purchase is meant to solve.

HoYoverse lists server connection problems among possible causes of connection failures and high latency. Suspect an issue outside your home network when:
- Several devices experience the problem.
- Different networks produce the same unusually poor result.
- Your local Wi-Fi remains stable for other services.
- The problem begins suddenly and affects multiple players or activities.
Do not assume an outage without a current official notice. Check HoYoverse’s official support or service communications, and contact support if the issue continues. Include enough detail for the support team to compare your case with other connection reports.

This information is more useful than simply reporting that the game “feels laggy,” because it helps separate a server-path problem from Wi-Fi, device, or client issues.
Optional Windows maintenance: only for apparent PC lag
After network testing, a Windows maintenance tool such as Outbyte PC Repair may be relevant if the real problem is background processes, storage clutter, or broader PC performance—not the physical network route to Genshin Impact’s server. It should not be treated as a dedicated ping reducer or network-route optimizer. Check what it changes and keep your graphics, network, and game-client troubleshooting separate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What ping is considered high in Genshin Impact?
There is no universal HoYoverse cutoff that makes one ping number bad for every player. A connection is practically problematic when latency is consistently elevated for your normal setup, spikes sharply, or causes delayed actions, rubber-banding, disconnects, or loading failures.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will Ethernet lower my Genshin Impact ping?
Ethernet can improve consistency when weak Wi-Fi, interference, or wireless congestion is the cause. It cannot remove latency caused by server distance, ISP routing, upstream congestion, or a HoYoverse-side problem.
Can I change Genshin servers without losing progress?
Changing regions does not transfer an account. HoYoverse ties progress, characters, and purchases to the original server, and accounts cannot be transferred or merged between servers.
Why does Genshin lag when my ping is normal?
If the ping indicator is normal but the game freezes or renders slowly, the problem may be low FPS, background applications, overheating, drivers, or corrupted game resources rather than network latency.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose before buying anything: compare networks, test Ethernet, restart and update the router if Wi-Fi is involved, reduce congestion, disable VPNs and proxies, and distinguish ping from low FPS. A Cat6 cable is useful because it provides a clean wired test, not because it guarantees lower ping. If the same problem appears across devices and networks, contact HoYoverse support rather than changing servers or purchasing a gaming accessory at random.
