AMD’s original FSR 4 restriction was real at launch, but the headline is now outdated. FSR 4 debuted on February 28, 2025, as an RDNA 4/Radeon RX 9000 feature. As of August 18, 2026, AMD supports FSR Upscaling 4.1 on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 GPUs. RX 6000 support is listed for 2027, while newer machine-learning frame-generation features remain exclusive to newer hardware.
What AMD originally announced
AMD announced FSR 4 alongside the Radeon RX 9000 series and its RDNA 4 architecture on February 28, 2025. The first implementation was a machine-learning-based upscaler designed for Radeon RX 9000 graphics cards, including the RX 9070 series, which became available on March 6, 2025.

At launch, AMD’s official FSR 4 path did not support Radeon RX 7000 or older GPUs. The company also introduced an FSR 4 Upgrade feature in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. On supported games, the driver could replace an existing FSR 3.1 upscaling implementation with FSR 4 without requiring a completely new game integration.
AMD initially listed more than 30 supported games, and later described more than 60 titles eligible for an FSR 3.1-to-FSR 4 upgrade. That did not mean every game using FSR 3.1 automatically gained FSR 4 support: AMD had to provide and maintain a compatible game profile.

Why last-generation cards were excluded at launch
In February 2025, “last generation” primarily meant RDNA 3 and the Radeon RX 7000 series. Older cards included RDNA 2/RX 6000 and RDNA 1/RX 5000.
AMD presented launch FSR 4 as relying on the newer AI acceleration capabilities of RDNA 4. AMD’s architecture material distinguishes RDNA 4’s second-generation AI accelerators from the earlier AI hardware in RDNA 3. That explains the hardware distinction AMD made, but it does not prove that no separately optimized implementation could ever run on earlier GPUs. The accurate claim is that AMD’s original, officially supported FSR 4 implementation was restricted to RDNA 4.

Current FSR compatibility by Radeon generation
AMD’s current documentation separates FSR upscaling from frame generation and the broader FSR Redstone feature set. As of August 18, 2026, the practical compatibility picture is:
| Feature | Radeon RX 6000 | Radeon RX 7000 | Radeon RX 9000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSR 3 upscaling | Yes, in supported games | Yes | Yes |
| FSR 3 frame generation | Supported on eligible hardware and games | Supported | Supported |
| FSR Upscaling 4.1 | Planned for 2027 | Yes | Yes |
| FSR Frame Generation 4 | No official support listed | No official support listed | Yes |
| Complete FSR Redstone feature set | No | No | Yes |
AMD now calls the former FSR 4 upscaling technology FSR Upscaling 4.1. Its current FSR Technologies page lists RX 7000 and RX 9000 support, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027.
The major change: RX 7000 support arrived in 2026
The turning point came with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2, dated June 22, 2026. Its release notes documented FSR Upscaling 4.1 support for Radeon RX 7000-series graphics cards.

It is no longer correct to say that FSR 4 upscaling categorically will not work on last-generation GPUs. RX 7000 owners can now use AMD’s officially supported FSR Upscaling 4.1 path in compatible titles, provided they use an appropriate driver and the game has the necessary support.
RX 7000 support should not be confused with complete RX 9000 feature parity. AMD still lists the newer FSR Redstone feature set, including FSR Frame Generation 4, for RX 9000 and newer hardware.
See AMD’s Adrenalin 26.6.2 release notes for the documented RX 7000 expansion.
FSR upscaling is not the same as FSR frame generation
“FSR 4 support” can describe several different technologies, so GPU compatibility depends on which feature a game is using.
- Upscaling renders a game internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image. FSR Upscaling 4.1 is now supported on RX 7000 and RX 9000, with RX 6000 support listed for 2027.
- Frame generation creates additional displayed frames between traditionally rendered frames. It has different latency, performance and artifact trade-offs from upscaling.
- FSR Frame Generation 4 is a newer machine-learning frame-generation path that AMD’s SDK documents for RX 9000-series GPUs or better. On other eligible hardware, developers may use FSR Frame Generation 3.1.6 instead.
- Other Redstone features, such as ray regeneration and related machine-learning technologies, have their own hardware requirements.
A card can therefore support FSR Upscaling 4.1 without supporting every FSR or Redstone feature. AMD’s FSR SDK documentation is the relevant reference for developers and feature-specific requirements.
How the driver-level FSR upgrade works
For games covered by AMD’s driver profile, the FSR 4 Upgrade path generally works as follows:
Rank #2
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Install a compatible AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition driver.
- Launch a supported DirectX 12 game that already includes FSR 3.1.
- Open the game-specific profile in AMD Software.
- Enable the FSR 4 Upgrade option if it is available.
- Use the game’s existing upscaling menu to select its quality mode.
- Restart the game if AMD Software or the title requests it.
The exact labels and location can change between driver versions. A supported GPU and Windows installation are also required for the original FSR 4 release path. Most importantly, an FSR 3.1 implementation alone is not a guarantee: the title must be supported by AMD’s current profile, and particular game builds or rendering modes may matter.
Native developer integration remains preferable when available. It gives the game studio more control and avoids depending entirely on a driver replacement profile. AMD’s GPUOpen FSR 4 release information explains the original developer and operating-system requirements.

What RX 6000 owners can use today
Radeon RX 6000 cards do not currently have official FSR Upscaling 4.1 support according to AMD’s published compatibility information. AMD lists that support as launching in 2027, so it should not be described as available now or guaranteed to arrive with a particular feature scope.
RX 6000 owners can still use FSR 1, FSR 2 and applicable FSR 3 features in games that support them. FSR 3 upscaling and FSR 3 frame generation are separate from FSR Upscaling 4.1. Likewise, features such as HYPR-RX, AFMF and Radeon Super Resolution have different requirements and do not prove that FSR Upscaling 4.1 works on an RX 6000 card.
AMD has also stated that RX 5000 and RX 6000 cards will continue receiving game support, stability improvements and security fixes despite separate driver branches introduced in late 2025. A newer driver branch does not, by itself, mean that support for those GPUs has ended.

Official hardware support is only one part of the compatibility chain. Common failure cases include:
- The game is not supported: FSR 3.1 integration does not automatically create an FSR 4 profile.
- The driver is too old: RX 7000 users need a driver with documented FSR Upscaling 4.1 support, such as Adrenalin 26.6.2 or a later applicable release.
- The API or rendering mode is unsupported: the original FSR 4 release specified DirectX 12.
- The profile was not created correctly: AMD release notes have documented cases involving missing per-game profiles or games where FSR 4 was not enabled as expected.
- The feature is present but frame generation is not: upscaling and frame generation have separate requirements.
- The game looks worse or behaves unpredictably: driver replacement can produce ghosting, shimmering, UI problems, artifacts or instability in some titles.
- The game needs a restart: changing a driver-level replacement while the title is running may not take effect until the next launch.
Community DLL replacements and other unofficial modifications may make a feature load on unsupported hardware, but they are not equivalent to AMD support. They can cause crashes, anti-cheat concerns, broken updates or unpredictable image quality.
What Radeon owners should do
RX 9000 owners
RX 9000 is the AMD platform for the broadest current FSR and Redstone feature set. Keep Adrenalin updated, use supported game profiles and prefer native integration where a game provides it. Do not assume every title exposes every FSR 4 feature simply because the GPU supports the hardware.
RX 7000 owners
Do not buy a new card solely because of the original 2025 FSR 4 headline. AMD now officially supports FSR Upscaling 4.1 on RX 7000. An upgrade to RX 9000 becomes relevant if you specifically want the complete Redstone feature set, particularly newer machine-learning frame-generation features, or if your current card is otherwise too slow for your games.
RX 6000 owners
There is no current official FSR Upscaling 4.1 support, but AMD lists RX 6000 support for 2027. If FSR 3 meets your needs and your card delivers the resolution and frame rate you want, waiting is a reasonable option. An immediate upgrade should be justified by broader performance needs, such as higher resolution, ray tracing, VRAM requirements or a target frame rate—not by the FSR name alone.

Should you upgrade for FSR 4?
For most owners, the answer depends on the specific feature and games they care about:
- Want FSR Upscaling 4.1? RX 7000 is now officially supported, RX 9000 is supported, and RX 6000 is listed for 2027.
- Want the full current FSR/Redstone feature set? RX 9000 is the relevant AMD platform.
- Already own RX 7000? An upgrade solely for FSR upscaling is difficult to justify because your card now has the supported upscaler.
- Already own RX 6000? Waiting may make sense if FSR 3 is adequate and you do not need the newer machine-learning features immediately.
- Prioritize image quality? Compare native resolution, FSR 3.1, FSR Upscaling 4.1 and other available upscalers in the games you actually play. Look at fine-detail reconstruction, temporal stability, motion artifacts and UI handling, not just the FPS counter.
- Prioritize responsiveness? Evaluate base frame rate, frame-time consistency and latency separately from generated-frame output. Frame generation can increase displayed FPS without increasing the rate at which the game simulates input and gameplay.
AMD’s launch materials listed a $599 USD suggested price for the RX 9070 XT in February 2025, but that is a historical launch reference rather than a verified August 2026 retail price. Board-partner pricing, availability and regional costs vary.
The bottom line
AMD’s statement was straightforward in February 2025: launch FSR 4 was an RX 9000-only feature. The current situation is more nuanced. RX 7000 now supports AMD’s FSR Upscaling 4.1, RX 6000 support is listed for 2027, and RX 9000 remains necessary for the complete current Redstone feature set and FSR Frame Generation 4. Check the exact game, driver and FSR component before treating “FSR 4 support” as a single yes-or-no feature.
