Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For N64 collectors who want to play their original cartridges on an HDMI television, the Analogue 3D makes a compelling case: it pairs FPGA-based hardware with 4K output, four original-style controller ports, and settings for tailoring the picture and performance. It is not a cheap way to sample a few games, a CRT solution, or a box of included digital classics. You need cartridges and a controller of your own or bought separately.
What the Analogue 3D is—and what it is not
Analogue describes the 3D as a reimagining of the Nintendo 64 built around FPGA hardware rather than conventional software emulation. It accepts original N64 cartridges, is region-free, and sends video to an HDMI display. The official product page says it is compatible with every original N64 game; that is the manufacturer’s claim, not a published independent test of the complete library. Analogue’s product page and official store list the console’s features.

That focus makes the 3D different from a digital subscription or a software-emulation setup: it is designed for physical cartridges, which you must supply. Its 4K HDMI output can make the image easier to use on a modern television, but it does not replace the games’ original art with newly rendered, modern graphics. WIRED’s review discusses the console’s image presentation and settings, while emphasizing that the underlying visuals remain those of the original games: WIRED’s Analogue 3D review.
Who should buy it?
It is a strong fit for cartridge collectors
If you already own N64 games and want to play them through HDMI without assembling a software-emulation setup, the Analogue 3D is aimed squarely at you. It has four original-style controller ports, and WIRED reports that original wired N64 controllers can be used. Its adjustable image and performance options add flexibility beyond a basic cartridge player.
#1 Best Overall
- Included in the box:
- Analogue 3D Console
- 16GB SD card (pre-installed)
- HDMI Cable
- USB Cable
It is a weaker fit if you want the cheapest route to a few games
The console does not include games, and a controller is not included either. If you do not already have a collection, the total cost depends on the cartridges you choose as well as the console and controller. Someone who only wants to try a handful of titles, or who does not want to buy and maintain physical games, may prefer a different way to play.
It is not for CRT purists
Analogue says the 3D works with HDMI televisions and is not compatible with CRTs or the Analogue DAC. If your priority is playing on a CRT, this console does not meet that requirement. Analogue’s product information specifies the display limitation.

How it changes the N64 experience
HDMI is the central convenience
The console outputs over HDMI at up to 4K, avoiding the need to connect an original N64 directly to a modern television. That is a display and scaling upgrade, not a remaster: the games retain their original assets and look. The distinction matters if you are expecting sharper output to mean modern textures or redesigned graphics. Analogue lists 4K HDMI output; WIRED discusses how that presentation differs from a visual remake.
Settings let you adapt per game
WIRED reports configurable overclocking, virtual Expansion Pak settings, picture sizing and fit options, and settings remembered per cartridge. Those options can be useful when a game behaves or looks better with a different configuration. In its review, WIRED notes that a particular game can benefit from disabling the virtual Expansion Pak, so there is no reason to assume one setting is ideal for every title. These are reviewer observations from the games tested, not proof that every game has been exhaustively checked. WIRED’s review describes its experience.

Cartridges remain part of the routine
TechRadar’s launch-period review reports that cartridge insertion sometimes took a second attempt. It also warns that flash-cart support can vary by model, so do not assume a particular flash cart will work unless its compatibility has been verified. These are observations from selected cartridges during that review, not a guarantee about every cartridge or current firmware. TechRadar’s review describes its testing.

| Consideration | Analogue 3D | Other approaches |
|---|---|---|
| How you get games | Uses original N64 cartridges; games are not bundled. | Digital services and software emulation use a different acquisition model. |
| Display connection | HDMI for modern televisions; not compatible with CRTs or Analogue DAC, according to Analogue. | Depends on the particular hardware or software setup. |
| Controller | Four original-style controller ports; original wired controllers work, and the 8BitDo Bluetooth controller is a separate purchase. | Controller support depends on the chosen device or software. |
| Picture | 4K output and configurable image settings; original game assets remain unchanged. | Image options and results vary by setup. |
| Cost to get started | Official black-console listing was $269.99 on October 8, 2026; add a controller if needed and the cost of any cartridges you do not own. | Varies by platform, software, and whether you already own compatible hardware or games. |
There is no universal winner across those approaches. The Analogue 3D’s clearest advantage is for people who value their original cartridges and want an HDMI-based console built for them. If you want low-cost access to a small selection, do not want physical media, or require CRT output, its strengths are less relevant.

Buying checklist
- Confirm the live price and stock. Analogue’s store listed the black console at $269.99 with “Ships now” on October 8, 2026; that status may change.
- Check what you already own. You need N64 cartridges, and you will need a controller because one is not in the box.
- Choose a display connection deliberately. The 3D is for HDMI televisions, not CRTs or the Analogue DAC.
- Verify any flash cart yourself. TechRadar reports that support can vary by model, so cartridge compatibility should not be presumed.
- Allow for per-game configuration. WIRED’s review describes settings that can be changed and remembered by cartridge; a game may not benefit from the same options as another.
