Short answer: buy a genuine Nintendo 3DS if you want authentic 3DS and DS cartridges, Nintendo’s original software environment, and glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. Consider the Anbernic RG DDS if you want a new Android handheld with larger, sharper screens, two full-size sticks, modern wireless features, expandable storage, and an emulator-focused design. The RG DDS is still a preorder, and independent testing has not yet established how well individual 3DS games run, so it is not a proven replacement for a working 3DS.

This comparison uses the original Nintendo 3DS hardware released in 2011. A used New Nintendo 3DS is a related but different purchase; inspect its condition and exact model rather than assuming every New-model feature applies to the specifications below.

Quick verdict

The two handhelds solve different problems. Nintendo designed the 3DS as a complete console: insert a 3DS or DS game card, open the lid, and use the system’s own menus, touch interface, cameras, wireless functions, and stereoscopic display. The RG DDS is an Android device built around flexible software and emulation. It has substantially larger and denser displays, newer connectivity, more storage options, active cooling, and controls that are closer to a modern gamepad, but it has no cartridge slot and no glasses-free 3D.

For a collector, a player with an existing cartridge library, or anyone who wants guaranteed access to the 3DS experience rather than an emulation project, the Nintendo hardware remains the safer choice. For someone who values screen size, Android applications, external display output, modern controls, and the ability to configure multiple systems on one device, the RG DDS is the more ambitious platform on paper. Its preorder status and unverified game compatibility are the important qualifications.

What each handheld actually is

Anbernic RG DDS

The RG DDS is a new dual-screen Android handheld from Anbernic. The listed platform combines a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 processor manufactured on a 4 nm process with an Adreno A22 GPU, Android 16, active fan and heat-pipe cooling, and either 8 GB of memory with 128 GB of storage or 12 GB with 256 GB. It is designed for emulation and general Android use rather than for running Nintendo software natively.

There is no cartridge slot. Playing 3DS or DS software therefore means using an emulator and legally obtained game files, with the result depending on emulator maturity, configuration, and the particular game. No independent, reproducible RG DDS compatibility or frame-rate test set is established yet, so a specification sheet cannot guarantee that a favorite title will perform correctly.

Original Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo released the original 3DS on February 26, 2011. It is a dedicated console with a 3DS/DS game-card slot, an SD slot, cameras, 2.4 GHz wireless, Nintendo system software, and a built-in touch interface. Nintendo’s official product page now marks the listed color variants as discontinued, so current units generally come from the used market or remaining old stock.

The 3DS remains the only option here that reproduces Nintendo’s intended hardware features, including the upper screen’s glasses-free stereoscopic effect and direct cartridge support.

Display: larger and sharper versus genuine 3D

The RG DDS has the clear advantage in physical screen area and pixel density. Its upper panel is about 4.7 inches and its lower panel about 4 inches, with both listed at 300 PPI and 500 nits. The upper 1200×720 panel and lower 960×720 panel should make text, menus, and small sprites easier to inspect than on the original 3DS, especially for games designed around dense interfaces.

Anbernic also advertises scaling intended to work cleanly with three-times rendering. That is a design target, not an independent image-quality test. Emulators may still need per-game adjustments for aspect ratio, integer scaling, screen layout, or performance.

The original 3DS has much lower listed resolution, but its upper display does something the RG DDS cannot reproduce: it presents a glasses-free stereoscopic image. The 3D slider lets you change the depth effect while playing compatible software. That effect is part of the game design in some first-party and third-party titles, not merely a higher-resolution presentation mode. If 3D depth is a reason you want a 3DS, the RG DDS is not an equivalent substitute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The two systems also use different lower-screen experiences. The RG DDS specifies a capacitive touch interface and an integrated retractable stylus. The original 3DS uses a smaller touch screen with the resistive-style feel associated with its dedicated stylus. Capacitive input is generally better suited to finger gestures, while the Nintendo arrangement was designed around precise stylus taps and game-specific touch controls.

Games and software: native console or configurable emulator

What the 3DS does natively

A real 3DS accepts 3DS and DS cartridges through its built-in slot and runs them within Nintendo’s original system environment. You do not need to select an emulator core, map two screens, resolve rendering quirks, or decide how to handle games that use the 3D slider. Cartridge ownership also gives you a straightforward way to keep using a physical library after buying the console.

The system’s cameras, wireless features, touch input, lid design, and dedicated buttons are integrated with the software. This matters for games that expect Nintendo-specific menus, motion, stereoscopic depth, or accessory behavior.

What the RG DDS can and cannot promise

The RG DDS can run Android software and is intended to support emulation, but its lack of a cartridge slot means it cannot read an original 3DS or DS card directly. You must supply software through a lawful method and configure an emulator. Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no property: one title may boot but have graphical errors, another may need a different renderer, and a third may be limited by performance or input mapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As of the current preorder information, no independent test set establishes frame rates, audio accuracy, sleep behavior, save-state reliability, or compatibility across a representative 3DS library. Treat claims based only on the Snapdragon chipset or memory size as predictions rather than guarantees. If you need one specific game, wait for a reproducible test of that game on final retail hardware.

How dual-screen emulation changes the experience

Android emulation can offer useful flexibility. You may be able to place the screens vertically, side by side, or in a custom layout; map the two sticks to different functions; assign hotkeys; and output a 1080p image to an external display. Those options are valuable for experimentation and for games that benefit from a larger view.

They also add decisions that do not exist on a stock 3DS. You may need to adjust touch coordinates after changing the layout, choose whether the lower screen is enlarged or kept at native proportions, and create separate profiles for games with unusual controls. The RG DDS is therefore more configurable, but not necessarily more immediate.

Controls, touch, and physical design

The RG DDS places two full-size analog sticks and a D-pad on the control surface, with ABXY buttons arranged around the lower display. That layout is closer to a contemporary gamepad and may be more comfortable for software that expects dual-stick input. Front-facing stereo speakers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a linear vibration motor, and a Hall-effect lid sleep switch are also listed.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Its integrated retractable capacitive stylus means you do not have to carry a separate pen for touch tasks. A compatible case and a screen protector are identified in Anbernic’s product information, but the final contents and regional availability should be confirmed with the seller before ordering.

The original 3DS uses a slide pad rather than a second full-size stick and combines it with a D-pad and dedicated face and shoulder controls. Its lid, cameras, 3D slider, and cartridge bay are part of the console’s identity. The folded 235 g weight is documented by Nintendo, while a final RG DDS weight is not stated in the listed specifications, so do not assume the newer device is lighter or more portable.

Performance, cooling, and connectivity

On paper, the RG DDS is the more modern computer. The Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, Adreno A22, Android 16, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, up to 12 GB of memory, and active fan with a heat pipe provide headroom that the 2011 3DS hardware does not have. The 1080p DisplayPort output and listed wireless screen-projection and streaming functions are useful if you want to play on a monitor or integrate the handheld into a larger setup.

Those features describe capability, not measured emulation quality. Cooling can help sustain performance, but fan noise, thermal limits, emulator optimization, and game-specific behavior still determine the experience. Until independent tests exist, the sensible conclusion is that the RG DDS has a stronger announced platform, not that it delivers a particular frame rate in a particular 3DS title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 3DS is less flexible but predictable. Its dedicated software stack and fixed controls let developers target one known hardware configuration. You give up modern Android conveniences and external-display specifications in exchange for an appliance-like experience.

Battery and charging

Nintendo’s current support information lists approximately 3–5 hours when playing 3DS software and 5–8 hours with DS software. Those are approximate ranges, and actual results vary with brightness, wireless use, volume, and battery age. A used unit may perform below the original figures if its battery has deteriorated.

Anbernic lists a 6000 mAh battery and 27 W charging for the RG DDS, but no measured runtime or charge-time result is established. Capacity alone cannot show whether it lasts longer than a 3DS: the larger screens, Snapdragon platform, fan, brightness, Android background activity, and emulator workload all affect consumption. Treat the capacity as a specification to verify, not as proof of superior endurance.

Availability, price, and purchase risk

Anbernic lists the RG DDS at a €244.99 promotional preorder price, displayed against €299.99, and estimates shipping from December 10, 2026. The listed variants were unavailable when the product page was checked. Promotional pricing, final stock, delivery timing, warranty coverage, and regional taxes can change, so verify those terms at checkout.

Nintendo has discontinued the original 3DS color variants shown on its official page. Buying one now means evaluating a specific used or old-stock unit. The important variables are battery health, hinge wear, screen condition, touch accuracy, button response, cartridge-reader function, charger compatibility, and whether the seller permits returns.

The financial comparison is therefore not simply a new price against a used price. The RG DDS asks you to accept preorder and first-generation software uncertainty. A used 3DS asks you to accept age-related wear and the possibility of replacing a battery or stylus. Neither purchase should be judged from the headline price alone.

Which one should you buy?

Choose a Nintendo 3DS when you need authenticity

  • You own or plan to buy physical 3DS or DS cartridges.
  • Glasses-free stereoscopic 3D is an essential feature rather than a curiosity.
  • You want Nintendo’s original menus, controls, cameras, and game-specific behavior without emulator configuration.
  • You need compatibility that is established by the console’s native software environment.
  • You are comfortable inspecting a used unit and budgeting for battery or cosmetic wear.

Choose the RG DDS when flexibility matters more

  • You prefer larger, sharper screens and modern gamepad controls.
  • You want Android applications, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, expandable storage, and DisplayPort output.
  • You are comfortable installing and configuring emulators and managing legally obtained game files.
  • You want one device that can be customized for different systems and screen layouts.
  • You accept preorder timing and will wait for independent compatibility reports before relying on it for specific games.

Wait if your decision depends on one unanswered test

Waiting is rational if your priority is a particular 3DS title, a guaranteed battery target, quiet operation, or a confirmed final weight. The RG DDS specifications establish what Anbernic plans to ship, but they do not establish how retail software behaves. Conversely, if you find a used 3DS with a healthy battery and verified controls, its known limitations may be preferable to waiting for an untested platform.

Buying and setup checklists

Before ordering an RG DDS

  1. Confirm that the listing is for the RG DDS, the desired memory/storage configuration, and the correct regional price.
  2. Read the preorder terms, estimated December 10, 2026 shipping date, return policy, warranty, and tax or import conditions.
  3. Decide how you will obtain software legally; the device does not read 3DS or DS cartridges.
  4. Check whether the seller includes the stylus and screen protector and whether the compatible case is a separate purchase.
  5. Wait for final-hardware tests if you require reliable performance in a specific 3DS game.

After receiving an RG DDS

  1. Record the device condition on arrival and verify both displays, the lid sleep switch, fan, speakers, headphone jack, sticks, D-pad, buttons, vibration, touch input, and stylus.
  2. Install system and emulator updates from legitimate sources, then create a backup before changing advanced settings.
  3. Test each game with a simple screen layout first; only then experiment with integer scaling, alternate renderers, frame limits, or custom controls.
  4. Map the capacitive touch area carefully after changing the two-screen arrangement, because a visual layout change can move the effective touch coordinates.
  5. Monitor temperature, fan noise, charging behavior, and battery drain during a sustained session rather than assuming the 6000 mAh rating predicts runtime.

When buying a used 3DS

  1. Inspect the hinge, shell, both screens, 3D slider, touch panel, cameras, speakers, headphone jack, shoulder buttons, slide pad, D-pad, and face buttons.
  2. Insert a known-good 3DS or DS game card and confirm that it boots, saves, and resumes correctly.
  3. Check the battery for swelling, unusually rapid drain, or charging interruptions, and verify that the charger is included or readily available.
  4. Test wireless functions and the SD slot, then confirm that the seller’s return period covers hidden faults.
  5. Only after testing should you reset the system or transfer your own data, so that a return remains straightforward if a hardware problem appears.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the RG DDS a Nintendo replacement: it is an Android emulator handheld, not a Nintendo-licensed 3DS and not a cartridge-compatible console.
  • Expecting real 3D: the RG DDS has conventional IPS panels; it does not provide the 3DS upper screen’s glasses-free depth effect.
  • Reading battery capacity as battery life: only the 3DS has an official approximate runtime range in the supplied specifications; RG DDS endurance remains untested.
  • Assuming every 3DS game will run: no independent compatibility set currently supports game-by-game guarantees for the RG DDS.
  • Ignoring preorder uncertainty: the listed price is promotional, variants were unavailable when checked, and the December 10, 2026 date is an estimate.
  • Comparing the wrong Nintendo model: the numerical 3DS figures here describe the original 2011 system. A New Nintendo 3DS is a separate used-market decision and should be assessed on its own condition and features.
  • Forgetting screen proportions: the RG DDS panels use different aspect ratios from each other and from 3DS software, so borders or layout adjustments may be necessary.

Final recommendation

For authentic Nintendo 3DS and DS gaming, the original console is still the better dual-screen system because it has the cartridges, stereoscopic display, and integrated software experience the RG DDS deliberately omits. For a modern, configurable handheld with larger screens, stronger announced hardware, active cooling, Android flexibility, and contemporary connectivity, the RG DDS is the more capable design in principle. Its preorder status and lack of independent compatibility testing are decisive caveats. Choose the 3DS for certainty and authenticity; choose the RG DDS for flexibility, and only after accepting that its real-world 3DS performance remains to be proven.
