Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The fastest way to fix League of Legends stuttering is to identify whether it is a frame-time problem or a network problem. A high average FPS does not guarantee smooth gameplay: one unusually long frame can cause a visible hitch, while stable FPS combined with champion snapping usually points to latency, jitter, or packet loss.
Use the tests below in order. Start with reversible changes—an FPS cap, disabled overlays, reduced effects, and a controlled Practice Tool reproduction—before changing drivers, Windows security settings, or game files.

First, identify what “stuttering” means
| What you see | Likely subsystem | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Brief freezes while FPS drops | CPU/GPU load, drivers, heat, or background software | Watch FPS, frame time, temperatures, and clock speeds |
| High FPS but uneven motion | Frame-time spikes, synchronization, overlays, or shader work | Cap FPS and disable overlays |
| Your champion snaps backward or commands arrive late | Latency, jitter, or packet loss | Compare ping and movement behavior |
| Stutter begins after several minutes | Thermal throttling, power limits, or memory pressure | Compare a cool startup with a long session |
| It happens when opening menus or using Alt-Tab | Overlay, fullscreen, or Windows compositor interaction | Disable overlays and test fullscreen separately |
| Only one patch, champion, or ability triggers it | Game regression or effect-specific performance issue | Test Practice Tool and another champion |
| The whole PC freezes or audio glitches | System driver, storage, RAM, power, or hardware issue | Test other games and inspect Windows errors |
Riot’s performance research notes that slowdowns can depend on a particular champion, ability, patch, hardware configuration, operating system, or match state. Its FPS number is also an average over recent seconds, so it may hide the exact frame that caused a hitch. See Riot’s performance profiling explanation.
Graphics stutter versus network lag
Graphics stutter makes animation or camera movement look uneven and often coincides with an FPS or frame-time spike. Network rubberbanding occurs when the game corrects your position, your champion snaps backward, or actions appear delayed. Your FPS may remain perfectly stable during a network problem.

Enter the Practice Tool and reproduce the same camera movement, ability use, or teamfight-like effect. Watch FPS and ping together:
- If FPS falls while ping remains stable, prioritize rendering and system fixes.
- If the champion snaps or actions are delayed while FPS remains stable, prioritize network troubleshooting.
- If both change, investigate each subsystem separately.
A high ping number alone does not prove a graphics problem, and a stable FPS counter does not prove that the connection is healthy.
Why average FPS can look good while the game stutters
FPS is an average rate; frame time measures how long each individual frame takes. At 60 FPS, a frame takes about 16.7 milliseconds. At 144 FPS it takes about 6.9 milliseconds, and at 240 FPS about 4.2 milliseconds. A single much longer frame can feel like a freeze even when the average FPS remains high.
Recommended Free Tools
For that reason, do not chase the highest possible FPS as your first objective. Aim for consistent frame delivery.
The quickest fixes to test
1. Cap FPS instead of running uncapped
- Open League’s in-game settings.
- Go to Video.
- Set Frame Rate Cap to a value your PC can maintain consistently.
- On a 144-Hz display, for example, test 120 or 141 rather than assuming unlimited FPS is better.
- Test V-Sync off and on as separate experiments.
A cap can reduce CPU and GPU oscillation, heat, and power spikes. V-Sync may reduce tearing but can add latency or worsen hitching if the system cannot sustain the display refresh rate. Change one setting at a time and record the result.
Extremely high uncapped frame rates can also create precision issues that players mistake for network latency, as discussed in Riot’s unified-clock article.
2. Disable overlays and capture hooks
Temporarily disable Discord, NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay, AMD Radeon overlay and recording, Xbox Game Bar, Steam overlay, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner OSD, OBS capture hooks, browser hardware-acceleration windows, RGB utilities, hardware monitors, and third-party League stat tools.

Restart League after changing overlays and reproduce the same event. If the hitch disappears, re-enable them one at a time to find the conflict. Monitoring software is useful for diagnosis, but its overlay can itself interact with a game.
3. Reduce the settings most likely to affect spikes
- Disable or reduce Shadows.
- Reduce Effects Quality, especially for ability or teamfight stutters.
- Reduce Character Quality and Environment Quality if GPU or VRAM usage is high.
- Test anti-aliasing separately.
- Leave resolution unchanged initially so you do not hide the original bottleneck.
- Test fullscreen and borderless independently.
Use a low baseline only for diagnosis, then restore settings individually. Riot’s FPS troubleshooting guidance recommends finding a balance rather than assuming software settings can overcome hardware limits.
4. Restart, close background programs, and test Practice Tool
Restart Windows and the Riot Client. Close browsers, recording software, cloud synchronization, RGB tools, motherboard utilities, and third-party game optimizers. Then test the same scenario in Practice Tool. This creates a repeatable comparison and removes some match-specific variables.
Find the actual bottleneck
During a hitch, record:
- FPS and frame time
- CPU utilization, including per-core load
- GPU utilization
- CPU and GPU temperatures
- CPU and GPU clock speeds
- RAM, VRAM, and disk activity
- Ping and movement behavior
| Observation | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| GPU near full utilization and FPS falls | Reduce GPU-heavy settings or resolution; check temperature and clocks |
| One CPU core is saturated while GPU is underused | Game-thread, CPU, or background-process bottleneck |
| Clocks fall as temperatures rise | Possible thermal or power throttling |
| No metric changes but visible hitches remain | Investigate overlays, shader compilation, drivers, storage, or a game regression |
| FPS is stable but movement snaps | Prioritize jitter, packet loss, and routing |
Driver and shader-cache troubleshooting
Install drivers from the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel site—not a random driver-updater utility. Record the current version before changing it.
If stuttering began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous known-good driver is a legitimate diagnostic step. “Latest” is not automatically best for every League and hardware combination.
Shader compilation and shader-cache behavior are recognized causes of stutter in PC games. NVIDIA documents shader-cache settings, and AMD documents shader caching as a way to avoid repeated shader work. Clearing a cache is not a guaranteed fix: it can help after corrupted or incompatible cached data, but the first launches may stutter while the cache is rebuilt.
- Close League and the Riot Client.
- Update or roll back the driver if the timing points to a regression.
- Clear the relevant shader cache using the current documented method for your driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Test several matches, not just the first minute.
Do not rely on a fixed cache-folder path; it can vary by Windows and driver version. NVIDIA also notes that an undersized shader-cache limit can cause old shaders to be removed and repeated work to occur.

Heat, power, and laptops
Investigate thermals when stuttering starts after several minutes, the laptop performs worse on battery, fans become unusually loud, or CPU/GPU clocks drop during the hitch.

Clean-boot testing
If closing visible applications does not help, use Riot’s current clean-boot procedure:
- Press Windows + R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open Services.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Re-enable
vgcso Riot Vanguard remains available. - Apply the change and restart.
- Test League, then restore normal startup services.
Menu names can vary by Windows language and edition. Document what you changed, and do not leave unrelated services disabled permanently. Riot’s clean-boot instructions are the appropriate reference for the current procedure.
Exploit Protection: use only for a matching Riot issue
Do not broadly disable Windows security features to cure ordinary stuttering. Riot’s January 14, 2026 guidance for VAN 9002 tells affected users to restore system exploit-protection settings to Use default, remove custom Riot-related program entries, and restart. That is different from a separate FPS article that discusses testing extension-point settings for League of Legends.exe.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
These instructions should not be merged into a generic “disable Exploit Protection” tweak. Follow the current Riot page for the exact VAN error, restore defaults afterward, and avoid broad security reductions. Labels can change with Windows updates. See Riot’s VAN 9002 guidance.

- Prefer Ethernet for diagnosis.
- Stop downloads, cloud synchronization, streaming, and high-bandwidth uploads.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Test another network if possible.
- For Wi-Fi, compare 5-GHz and 2.4-GHz conditions, distance, interference, channels, and router firmware.
- Investigate jitter and packet loss, not just download speed.
- Consider router QoS only when household traffic saturates the connection; incorrect QoS can make things worse.
Changing DNS may help login, patching, or name resolution, but it is not a general cure for in-match rendering stutter or network jitter. Use Riot’s current wireless and router guidance when the problem is reproducible.

After a League patch
Record the exact patch number. Test another champion, mode, and Practice Tool, then compare with another game. If many players report the same behavior, a patch-specific regression becomes more plausible; do not assume a local hardware failure.
Only during teamfights or particular abilities
Test Effects Quality and Shadows, then watch CPU frame time, GPU utilization, temperatures, and clocks. A reproducible champion- or ability-specific slowdown may be a game-side performance issue rather than inadequate hardware.
Every game stutters
Prioritize driver installation, temperatures and power limits, RAM stability, Windows background software, storage or system corruption, BIOS/chipset issues, and possible hardware failure. If only League stutters, prioritize League-specific driver profiles, overlays, shader behavior, client interaction, and patch regressions.
Advanced tweaks to avoid as first-line fixes
Process affinity, priority changes, registry edits, compatibility mode, unofficial launch arguments, and third-party “optimizers” are system-specific experiments—not universal fixes.
They can prevent useful cores from being used, interfere with Vanguard or future updates, create new instability, and do nothing for network problems. If you test one, record the original setting and ensure you know how to undo it. Do not apply registry or compositor changes without a matching symptom, a backup, and a documented rollback.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does League stutter at 200 FPS?
Because average FPS does not show every frame’s delivery time. A long frame caused by an overlay, driver, shader compilation, CPU spike, or synchronization problem can feel like a hitch even at a high average FPS.
Should I cap League’s FPS?
It is a safe, reversible test. Set the cap to a value your system can maintain consistently, then compare it with uncapped play and test V-Sync separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes clearing the shader cache fix League stuttering?
It can help when cached shader data is corrupted or incompatible, but it is not guaranteed. Expect possible temporary stutter while shaders are rebuilt.
Should I reinstall League?
Usually not first. Reinstalling will not fix thermal throttling, overlays, network jitter, or a driver regression. Try controlled diagnosis and Riot’s repair/logging tools first.
Should I change CPU affinity or process priority?
Not as a first-line fix. These changes can reduce performance, interfere with Vanguard or updates, and create instability. Use them only as carefully documented, reversible experiments.
