The Anbernic RG477V launched in December 2025 and is no longer an upcoming handheld. Pre-orders opened on December 20, 2025, at 10:00 UTC, with early-bird pricing of $199 for the 8GB/128GB model and $239 for the 12GB/256GB model. Anbernic subsequently listed the device through its regional stores.
Its appeal is unusual: a vertical, Game Boy-style body paired with a MediaTek Dimensity 8300, a 4:3 120Hz screen and enough performance for demanding Android games and selected GameCube and PlayStation 2 titles.

RG477V launch date and availability
Anbernic revealed the RG477V in stages during December 2025. Core specifications were confirmed before launch, additional details followed on December 15, and launch pricing was reported on December 17. Pre-orders were scheduled to begin on December 20, 2025, at 10:00 UTC. Secondary coverage described the handheld as officially launched and available in overseas markets on December 21.
As of August 18, 2026, the RG477V appears as an established product on Anbernic’s regional stores, including the Canadian storefront. Regional stock, currency, shipping charges, taxes and warranty arrangements vary. The indexed Canadian page displayed C$254.35 when crawled, but that should not be treated as a current U.S. checkout price.

These were December 2025 U.S.-dollar launch prices, not guaranteed current prices. They may not include tax, shipping or import charges. Optional 128GB and 256GB microSD-card bundles were presented separately from the handheld’s internal storage.

The specifications come from Anbernic’s official product listing. The box includes the RG477V, a USB-C charging cable, a user manual and the retail box. A microSD card is an optional listing choice rather than something buyers should assume is included.

The RG477V’s 120Hz panel is not evidence that classic games will automatically render at 120 frames per second. Most retro content remains tied to its original frame rate or to the limits of the chosen emulator.
The higher refresh rate can nevertheless improve motion clarity. Compatible software may use black-frame insertion, or BFI, to make 60fps gameplay appear sharper during scrolling and fast movement. The effect depends on the emulator, frame pacing and whether BFI is enabled. A 60Hz setting may be preferable when conserving battery power.

The 4:3 aspect ratio is a natural match for much of the RG477V’s intended content, including Game Boy-era systems, older consoles and arcade games. It is less ideal for widescreen Android games and 16:9 PC streaming, which will either use more of the screen’s width or leave unused areas.
Emulation and Android gaming performance
The Dimensity 8300 gives the RG477V substantially more headroom than Anbernic’s lower-cost Linux handhelds. NES, SNES, Mega Drive, arcade, Game Boy-family systems, PlayStation and other older platforms should be straightforward targets with suitable software.

That does not mean every title will run perfectly: results depend on the emulator, resolution, renderer, per-game settings and thermal state.
Launch coverage also described support for more than 30 emulator types and cited demanding platforms such as Wii U. Those claims should be read as platform capability, not a guarantee of universal compatibility. Wii U and other particularly demanding systems remain game-specific. The handheld can also run native Android games and supports use cases such as game streaming, wireless projection and online multiplayer.
RG477V versus RG477M
The RG477V and RG477M share broadly similar core hardware, including the Dimensity 8300 platform, 4.7-inch 1280×960 120Hz display class and active cooling. The major distinction is the chassis and control orientation:

- RG477M: horizontal metal body, positioned as the more premium alternative.
The RG477V’s launch configurations were $20 cheaper than comparable RG477M pricing, making it the value-oriented choice at release. That does not mean the devices perform identically. Chassis design, cooling and sustained power behavior can influence performance, while grip comfort depends heavily on the type of games being played.
Choose the RG477V if a vertical form factor and compact 4:3 design matter most. The RG477M is more appropriate for buyers who prefer a horizontal grip, a metal chassis or longer sessions with 3D games.

Active cooling is necessary for the RG477V’s performance class, but it is also a usability trade-off. Android Authority found temperatures mostly controlled during testing, while noting that the fan can become audible.
The review also found that the regular Performance mode behaved better for sustained testing than the highest High Performance mode, which throttled sooner in that testing. In other words, selecting the most aggressive setting is not automatically the best choice for long sessions.
Expect fan noise during demanding emulation, and treat battery claims carefully. Anbernic advertises up to eight hours, but actual runtime varies with brightness, refresh rate, fan behavior, emulator load and power mode.

Software and setup
The RG477V ships with Android 14, Anbernic’s front end, emulator support, FOTA wireless updates, customizable controls, RGB-lighting controls, display settings and energy-saving options. Anbernic also lists AI-related features such as game-guide retrieval and translation.
Android handhelds are not always plug-and-play. Buyers may need to choose emulators, configure controls, manage BIOS files where required and supply legally obtained game images. A bundled microSD card should not be assumed to contain licensed commercial games unless the seller explicitly documents that.
Android Authority found the built-in front end less appealing than third-party options such as ES-DE or Beacon. Interface labels and launcher behavior can change with firmware updates; Anbernic has also published firmware information for the RG477V and RG477M.
Who should buy the RG477V?
The RG477V makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want a vertical 4:3 Android handheld with enough power for selected GameCube and PS2 games. Hall-effect sticks, a high-refresh display, modern wireless connectivity and a relatively compact 334g body strengthen the package.

The vertical layout is a form-factor choice—not an automatic ergonomic advantage for PS2 or GameCube.
The 8GB model should be sufficient for ordinary emulation. The 12GB version offers more storage and multitasking headroom, but the available evidence does not establish that it is universally faster in games. Choose it mainly if the extra internal storage is valuable or if you expect to keep many demanding Android applications installed.
