The codename referred to Microsoft and ASUS’s partner handheld project, which launched on October 16, 2025, as the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
Both devices are ASUS-built Windows 11 handheld PCs with Xbox software, controls and services layered on top. Calling Kennan an “upcoming ROG Ally” was reasonable during the 2025 leak cycle, but it is outdated as of August 2026.

What was Project Kennan?
“Kennan” was a pre-release codename associated with an ASUS-built Xbox partner handheld. Early reporting connected it with a next-generation ROG Ally design, including photographs reportedly exposed through FCC-related filings on May 7, 2025. Microsoft did not use Project Kennan as the retail name.
Microsoft and ASUS officially announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025. Microsoft’s broader approach was to bring a better Xbox experience to Windows handhelds through hardware partnerships, rather than immediately manufacture a traditional portable Xbox itself.
#1 Best Overall
- [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
The simplest description is therefore: Kennan became the ROG Xbox Ally family. It is related to the ROG Ally line, but it is not merely an ordinary “ROG Ally 2,” and it is not a handheld Xbox Series console.
Is it an ROG Ally 2?
That depends on what the comparison means.
- Hardware lineage: Yes. ASUS manufactures the devices, and their form factor, controls and Windows-PC foundation clearly connect them to the ROG Ally family.
- Software and ecosystem: No. Microsoft and ASUS added a controller-focused Xbox experience, a dedicated Xbox button, an Xbox-oriented full-screen mode and a consolidated game library.
- Traditional Xbox console: No. Both systems run Windows 11 Home and can access PC storefronts. They are Xbox-integrated handheld PCs, not closed Xbox-console hardware.
ASUS is listed as the manufacturer on the official Xbox product page, while Microsoft supplies Xbox software, services, interface integration and branding.
The two retail models

| Storage | 512GB M.2 2280 SSD | 1TB M.2 2280 SSD |

| Operating system | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Home |

Both models also list 500-nit brightness, AMD FreeSync Premium, Gorilla Glass Victus, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4 and upgradeable M.2 2280 storage. The Ally X has more memory, storage and battery capacity, but processor names alone do not establish a fixed real-world performance or battery-life advantage. Power mode, game settings and the individual title matter.

The Xbox collaboration is most visible in the user experience:
- The handheld can boot into an Xbox-oriented full-screen mode designed for controller navigation.
- A dedicated Xbox button opens Game Bar.
- The library can bring together Xbox and supported PC storefront games.
- Players can use native PC games, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play.
- Supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles can carry purchases, saves, achievements and add-ons between Xbox consoles, PCs and supported handhelds.
- ASUS Armoury Crate remains available for device and input controls.
This is best understood as an Xbox layer on top of a Windows handheld PC. It is not a new console operating system that replaces Windows.
Does it play Xbox console games?
Not automatically, and the Xbox branding should not be read as compatibility with the entire Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S library.

Games generally reach the handheld through one of four routes:
Recommended Free Tools
- Native PC versions: Games installed through the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Steam, Battle.net, GOG or other supported PC launchers.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Qualifying games bought once can work across Xbox consoles and PC, with supported cross-device progress. Play Anywhere is title-specific; an Xbox game does not automatically include a PC version.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming: Supported games are streamed over the internet, subject to the applicable subscription, region and catalog requirements.
- Xbox Remote Play: A game running on the player’s Xbox console is streamed to the handheld over a network.
Xbox-console-only games without a PC version generally cannot be installed and played locally on the handheld. Cloud Gaming and Remote Play require a suitable network connection and are not substitutes for local installation when traveling offline. Catalogs, supported regions and subscription benefits can change.
PC storefront compatibility also is not identical to console compatibility. Some launchers or games may require account linking, a keyboard and mouse, or manual setup.
When did Kennan launch?
- May 7, 2025: Reported FCC-related photographs linked an Xbox/Kennan device with an ASUS ROG Ally successor. This was leak-stage evidence, not an announcement.
- June 8, 2025: Microsoft and ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X.
- August 20, 2025: Xbox confirmed the October 16 launch date and detailed additional handheld features.
- October 16, 2025: Xbox announced worldwide availability across 45 countries, with additional markets to follow.
- March 11, 2026: Microsoft said Xbox mode innovations first introduced on the ROG Xbox Ally would begin coming to Windows 11 in select markets from April 2026.
That timeline is why articles still describing Kennan as merely “upcoming” need updating. The product is now a launched device family.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider it?
The ROG Xbox Ally makes the most sense for players who want a controller-first Windows handheld, already own Xbox Play Anywhere games, use Xbox Cloud Gaming or Remote Play, or want access to several PC storefronts alongside Xbox services.
Existing ROG Ally owners should not assume an automatic upgrade. The decision depends on the owner’s current model, the value of the larger battery and memory in the Ally X, current pricing, and whether the Xbox interface and services matter. Independent testing is necessary for claims about frame rates, endurance, thermals, fan noise and ergonomics.

A regular ROG Ally may remain preferable for buyers who find it cheaper, already have one, or do not rely on Xbox features. Steam-first players may also prefer a SteamOS-oriented handheld, while buyers wanting a larger screen or different performance and battery characteristics should compare competing models.
Remember that a case, dock, storage card, controller and subscription can materially increase the total cost. The official product page lists a three-month Game Pass Premium offer as “almost a $45 value,” but activation, payment, eligibility, region and subscription terms apply.
What changed after launch?
The partnership is bigger than one product. Microsoft’s March 2026 announcement said Xbox handheld-mode improvements would expand to Windows 11, suggesting that features developed for the ROG Xbox Ally are part of a wider effort to improve gaming on Windows devices—not proof that every Windows handheld has identical hardware or software behavior.
The bottom line
Project Kennan was not a mystery first-party Xbox console and it was not simply an ordinary ROG Ally 2. It was the codename associated with Microsoft and ASUS’s Xbox handheld partnership. That project became the ASUS-manufactured ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, launched on October 16, 2025.
Think of the result as an Xbox-enhanced Windows gaming PC: it offers native PC games, Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud streaming and Remote Play, but it does not locally run the entire Xbox console library. For current coverage, “ROG Xbox Ally” is the correct product name and “upcoming” is no longer accurate.
