Anima: Gate of Memories is a 2016 third-person action RPG set in Gaia, the world of the Anima: Beyond Fantasy tabletop role-playing books. Its premise pairs an ancient monster with a girl who has lost her past; its advertised systems include switching between the two characters in combat, developing their skills, and revisiting locations to uncover secrets and open new paths. Those details describe the game’s design and store-page claims—not a verdict on how well its combat, story, or exploration work in play.

What kind of game is Anima: Gate of Memories?

Released on Steam on June 2, 2016, Anima: Gate of Memories is a single-player, third-person action RPG developed by Anima Project and published by Anima Publishing. It takes place in Gaia, the setting of the Anima: Beyond Fantasy tabletop role-playing books. The story centers on two beings bound by an unwilling pact: an ancient monster and a girl who has lost her past. Steam’s store listing describes a choice-driven story, boss encounters, action combat with RPG elements, and varied locations.

How does the combat work?

The game advertises action combat built around two protagonists. Players can switch between them during combat to create combos, use spells, and develop character skills. These are the listed systems; the available product information does not establish how responsive the controls feel, how deep the tactical choices are, or how clearly the game teaches its mechanics. Those are important questions to answer through play rather than assume from the feature list.

What is exploration like?

Locations can be revisited, and the store description says exploration may reveal secrets and open paths that were inaccessible earlier. Whether backtracking feels rewarding, whether routes are easy to read, and how well exploration supports progression depend on the game’s execution; the listing alone does not settle those points.

Is the story accessible to newcomers?

The premise is understandable without prior knowledge: an ancient monster and a girl without her memories are tied together by an unwilling pact. The game is set in the wider Anima: Beyond Fantasy universe, but the official listing does not establish how much familiarity with that setting the narrative assumes. Nor does it establish how meaningfully story choices alter events or the protagonists’ fates.

Is the original different from the remaster?

Yes. The original Anima: Gate of Memories is a single game first released on Steam in 2016. Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster is a separate later release that combines Gate of Memories with The Nameless Chronicles. In its official announcement, the publisher describes the remaster as rebuilt with enhanced visuals, rebalanced combat, and gameplay improvements. Those claims apply to the remaster; they should not be taken as descriptions of the original game’s presentation or mechanics. The official Steam announcements provide the remaster context.

What should you check before playing on PC?

Steam lists requirements for Windows, macOS, and SteamOS + Linux, but its legacy minimum specifications are not a guarantee of compatibility with a current computer or operating system. The listing warns specifically that the game is not compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, despite also showing newer macOS client-support notices. Check the current store page for the operating system and platform you intend to use before buying.

  • Windows minimum listed: dual-core processor, 4 GB RAM, DirectX 9.0c, a compatible graphics card with 512 MB RAM or better, and 6 GB storage.
  • macOS details listed: 4 GB RAM and 5 GB storage; the Catalina-and-later incompatibility warning is also displayed.
  • SteamOS + Linux: the listing includes system requirements for this platform; consult the page for the current details.

Is Anima: Gate of Memories worth playing?

The available official information makes the game a plausible fit for players interested in a fantasy action RPG with two switchable protagonists, character development, revisitable areas, and a story rooted in the Anima setting. It cannot support a confident critical verdict about combat feel, camera behavior, pacing, technical performance, encounter variety, or the impact of choices. Those questions require firsthand play. Steam displayed 581 purchaser reviews and 69% positive for the original listing in a snapshot returned on October 8, 2026; those figures are dynamic user-review data, not a critic score or a stable lifetime rating.
