Destiny 2 is the only practical choice in 2026. Anthem’s online servers were sunset on January 12, 2026, and Electronic Arts and BioWare said the online-only game would no longer be playable after that date. Destiny 2 remains available, with raids, dungeons, destination activities, triumphs and other rewards still forming a substantial endgame. Its important limitation is that Bungie identifies June 9, 2026, as the final planned live-service content update.
Anthem still deserves credit for a more distinctive movement fantasy: Javelin suits could fly, hover and make traversal part of combat. Destiny 2 has the stronger complete package because its weapons, abilities, encounters and progression still connect to a functioning game. The fairest comparison is therefore historical for Anthem’s combat, but current and practical for Destiny 2.

Is Anthem still playable in 2026?
No. Anthem is not a current alternative to Destiny 2. In an Anthem Game Update dated July 3, 2025, Electronic Arts and BioWare stated that the servers would remain available until January 12, 2026, “at which time the game will no longer be playable.” Because Anthem was online-only, the shutdown removed access to its missions, character progression, matchmaking and endgame activities rather than merely disabling a multiplayer option.
That status changes how every comparison should be read. Anthem’s flight model, Javelin identities and encounter feel can be discussed as design history, but a new player cannot start an Anthem progression journey, assemble a build or reach its endgame today. Advice that presents Anthem as a live purchase or a playable alternative is out of date.

What the shutdown means for an existing player
- There is no supported online service to enter after January 12, 2026.
- Online-only missions and progression cannot be continued through an offline mode.
- Any comparison of loot depth or endgame activity now describes what Anthem offered before the shutdown, not what a player can access in 2026.
- Owning a disc or having the game installed does not restore server-dependent features; the title was not built as a self-contained offline campaign.
- There is no current matchmaking, reward chase or service schedule to plan around.
Why this comparison needs a timeline
Two dates explain the unusual verdict. EA and BioWare’s July 3, 2025 announcement set January 12, 2026 as Anthem’s server sunset, ending the only way to play the game. Bungie’s June 9, 2026 support guide instead describes Destiny 2 continuing after Update 9.7.0 while ending planned live-service content updates. The dates are close enough to confuse the two situations, but they are not equivalent: Anthem became inaccessible, whereas Destiny 2 retained its existing game.
A third date matters for expectations. On September 17, 2026, Bungie said work was beginning to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids. That statement points to preservation and restoration, not a promise that the old seasonal release cadence will return. A comparison that ignores these dates can make both games sound equally active or equally discontinued, which is inaccurate.

Anthem had the more unusual combat fantasy; Destiny 2 has the better combat package for a player who can actually play it. Anthem made movement central by giving each Javelin suit a different identity and allowing flight, hovering and aerial traversal. Destiny 2 builds its feel around weapon handling, abilities and encounter design, then places those tools inside a still-functioning activity ecosystem.
Why Anthem’s movement stood out
Anthem’s defining idea was that a powered suit was not just armor with statistics. The Javelin was the way the player moved, attacked and approached an arena. Flying between encounters, hovering to maintain a firing position and switching between suit roles gave combat a vertical rhythm that was difficult to confuse with a conventional cover shooter.
That movement also shaped decision-making. A player could use altitude and speed to change distance, enter an encounter from above or reposition without following a ground-only route. The result was a combat identity built around momentum and traversal as much as shooting. Those qualities explain why Anthem remains an interesting historical reference even though its service has ended.
The distinction is important for readers asking which game has “better” combat. If the question means novelty of movement, Anthem’s Javelin concept is the standout. If it means a combat system that can be practiced, tested in activities and connected to rewards today, Anthem cannot compete because its game world is no longer accessible.
What Destiny 2 does better in active play
Destiny 2’s combat is less dependent on one headline movement gimmick. Its strength is the connection between weapon feel, ability timing and encounter design. Guns and abilities are used in activities that ask players to manage targets, space, objectives and team roles, so the moment-to-moment loop feeds directly into rewards and progression.
That connection matters more in 2026 than a purely mechanical comparison. Anthem’s movement cannot currently lead to a mission, reward or build experiment. Destiny 2’s weapons and abilities still have a reason to be learned because raids, dungeons, destination activities and other challenges remain available.

Destiny 2 also gives combat several contexts instead of asking one mode to carry the entire experience. Destination activities support a more open-ended style, while raids, dungeons and Pantheon challenges provide structured tests. The same core shooting and ability skills can therefore be applied to exploration, coordinated encounters or completion goals.
Combat verdict
Choose Anthem only as a reference point for distinctive flight-and-suit design; there is no live game to choose. For actual play, Destiny 2 wins because its combat remains attached to a functioning set of encounters and rewards. The verdict is not that Destiny 2 copied or replaced Anthem’s movement fantasy. It is that a complete, available combat loop is more valuable than a more novel mechanic that can no longer be accessed.

How do progression and gear systems compare?
Destiny 2 wins progression by default in the current market between these two games. It still provides an accessible reward ecosystem in which activities, triumphs and challenges can lead to further goals. Anthem’s progression can only be described historically because its servers no longer allow a player to earn or use new gear.
Destiny 2’s active progression loop
Destiny 2 links progression to a broad menu of activities. A player can pursue rewards through ordinary destination content, higher-difficulty challenges, raids, dungeons, Pantheon challenges and triumph-driven objectives. The variety gives progression more than one route: players who prefer structured group encounters have one path, while those who enjoy exploration or completion goals have others.
The practical advantage is choice. A reward system remains meaningful when there are activities that can still be launched, goals that can still be completed and social spaces in which players can coordinate. Bungie’s Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 support material lists these activity and reward categories as part of the retained Destiny 2 experience.
Players should separate “available progression” from “future expansion progression.” Destiny 2 still lets a player pursue current rewards and triumphs, but Bungie no longer promises planned live-service content updates after June 9. That means the existing loop is usable, while the number and timing of future goals are less certain than during a normal seasonal schedule.

Before the shutdown, Anthem’s appeal depended on collecting equipment and improving Javelin builds through an online service. That progression was inseparable from the servers. Since the game was online-only, there is no current offline campaign or standalone loot mode in which a new player can recreate the journey.
It is therefore misleading to compare drop rates, build variety or long-term gearing as if both games still offered equivalent access. Anthem may have had an interesting progression concept at release, but that concept is not an available system in October 2026.

A common mistake is to treat an installed copy, a remembered campaign or old video as evidence that progression still works. Those materials can explain how Anthem once handled Javelins and gear, but they cannot provide a live character, matchmaking, missions or reward claims after the shutdown.
Progression verdict
Destiny 2 is the clear choice for anyone who wants a living progression loop. Anthem’s historical systems may be worth discussing when studying looter-shooter design, but they cannot support a new character, a new build or a current endgame chase.

Which game has the stronger endgame?
Destiny 2 has the stronger and only currently accessible endgame. Bungie’s Monument of Triumph material identifies raids, dungeons, Pantheon challenges, destination activities, triumphs, rewards and social activities as available parts of Destiny 2. Those categories cover repeatable combat, high-difficulty coordination, exploration and completion goals.
Destiny 2’s endgame layers
- Raids: large group activities built around coordinated encounters and rewards.
- Dungeons: smaller, structured challenges that provide a distinct route beyond ordinary destination play.
- Pantheon challenges: a dedicated challenge format for players seeking demanding encounters.
- Destination activities: open-world or location-based content that supports ongoing play outside pinnacle encounters.
- Triumphs and rewards: completion targets that give collectors and long-term players reasons to revisit activities.
- Social activities: group-oriented spaces and objectives that make the endgame more than a solo equipment checklist.
The important point is breadth rather than a single mode. A player can move between difficult group content, destination objectives and triumph hunting instead of exhausting one narrow activity type. The exact availability of individual activities can change with Bungie’s service decisions, but the cited support material confirms that these categories remain part of the game’s current package.
This breadth also helps different kinds of players. Someone seeking coordinated encounters can focus on raids or dungeons; someone who prefers exploration can work through destination activities; and a completionist can pursue triumphs and their associated rewards. The endgame is therefore a set of overlapping goals rather than one definition of “finished.”
Why Anthem cannot compete on endgame in 2026
Anthem’s endgame was once a question of mission repetition, loot pursuit and Javelin optimization. It is no longer a playable endgame, however. After the January 12, 2026 server sunset, there is no matchmaking, reward chase or online activity schedule for a player to enter.
That makes “which has more endgame?” a status question rather than a balanced feature comparison. Destiny 2 has an active set of endgame categories; Anthem has a discontinued service.
What is Destiny 2’s support status after June 9, 2026?
Destiny 2 remains playable, but it is no longer on a normal planned live-service content schedule. Bungie’s June 9, 2026 support guide says that, following Update 9.7.0, Destiny 2 would no longer receive planned live-service content updates. This is a major qualification for anyone choosing a game for years of regular expansions or seasonal releases.

The change does not equal an immediate shutdown. Bungie’s material describes retained activities and rewards, so the existing game remains available after the update. The distinction is between access to current content and a promise of a conventional stream of new seasonal content.
What Bungie says about future restoration
In a September 17, 2026 studio statement, Bungie described work beginning to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids, and called Destiny foundational to the studio’s future. Restoration work is not the same as a published seasonal roadmap: it signals preservation and rebuilding of content, while the June 9 support guide still marks the end of planned live-service updates.

Existing content can still justify playing now, but future availability and restoration timing should be judged by Bungie’s subsequent announcements.
For a prospective player, this status creates a straightforward trade-off. Destiny 2 offers a substantial game to enter today, but not the certainty of regularly scheduled new seasons. That is still materially different from Anthem, where the service itself has ended and the game cannot be entered at all.
Which game offers better value today?
Destiny 2 offers the only practical value between these two titles. It can still be launched and played through a substantial activity and reward ecosystem. Anthem cannot provide value as a current game because its online service has ended and the title was not designed to function offline.
This conclusion does not require pretending that Destiny 2 has an unlimited future. The June 9, 2026 end of planned live-service updates is a real limitation, especially for players who value a guaranteed schedule of new seasons. Even with that caveat, a playable game with raids, dungeons, destination activities and triumphs is a more useful choice than an unavailable one.
A practical decision checklist
- Do you need a game you can launch now? Choose Destiny 2. Anthem’s servers are gone.
- Is movement novelty your top priority? Anthem’s historical Javelin flight and hovering remain the more distinctive concept, but they cannot be experienced through supported play.
- Do you want several progression routes? Destiny 2 retains destination activities, raids, dungeons, Pantheon challenges, triumphs and rewards.
- Do you require a guaranteed stream of new seasonal content? Neither game fits that expectation: Anthem is offline, and Bungie says June 9, 2026 was Destiny 2’s final planned live-service update.
- Are you interested in service-game preservation? Destiny 2 is the relevant case because Bungie has described restoration work; Anthem’s online service has already ended.
Who should choose Destiny 2, and who should study Anthem’s legacy?
Choose Destiny 2 if you want to:
- Play a looter shooter immediately rather than examine a discontinued title.
- Build toward rewards through several activity types.
- Take part in raids, dungeons or Pantheon challenges.
- Chase triumphs and completion goals after finishing ordinary activities.
- Play in a social ecosystem that still has accessible group content.
- Use combat skills in both destination activities and coordinated endgame encounters.
Look back at Anthem if you want to:
- Understand how flight and vertical traversal can define a shooter’s identity.
- Study the design potential of suit-based roles and movement-driven encounters.
- Compare a memorable combat concept with the realities of online-service support.
- Discuss how a game’s most distinctive mechanic can remain influential even after its service disappears.
Anthem’s historical strengths explain why the comparison remains interesting, but they do not make it a recommendation. Destiny 2 is the answer for play; Anthem is the reference point for a combat idea that outlived its service.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using present tense for Anthem: Flight and Javelin roles describe what the game offered before January 12, 2026, not a mode available now.
- Calling Destiny 2 a normally expanding live service: Bungie’s June 9 guide explicitly ends planned live-service content updates.
- Assuming restoration equals a seasonal roadmap: The September 17 statement describes restoring vaulted content, not guaranteeing a former release cadence.
- Comparing endgame checklists without checking access: Destiny 2’s listed activities remain available; Anthem’s online endgame cannot be entered.
How we picked
The ranking uses four criteria based on the games’ current status and documented activity lists:

- Availability: whether a new player can actually access the game in October 2026.
- Combat identity: the distinctiveness of movement, weapons, abilities and encounters.
- Progression: whether rewards and build goals remain connected to playable activities.
- Endgame and support: the breadth of retained activities and the publisher’s stated future plans.
On those criteria, Destiny 2 ranks first. Anthem’s combat identity earns historical recognition, but its January 12, 2026 shutdown prevents it from qualifying as a current recommendation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Anthem be played offline after the server shutdown?
No. Anthem was designed as an online-only game, and the publisher’s shutdown notice said it would no longer be playable once the servers went offline. There is no supported offline campaign that preserves its missions or progression.
Does Anthem still have servers?
No. Electronic Arts and BioWare scheduled the online servers to sunset on January 12, 2026. After that date, Anthem is not a playable alternative, even for someone interested only in its campaign.
Is Destiny 2 worth playing in 2026?
Yes, if you want an accessible looter shooter with raids, dungeons, destination activities, Pantheon challenges, triumphs and rewards. The qualification is that Bungie ended planned live-service content updates on June 9, 2026, so you should not expect the old seasonal cadence.
Does Destiny 2 still have raids and dungeons in 2026?
Bungie’s Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 support material lists raids and dungeons among the activities available after the June 9 update. Individual activity availability can still change, so players should check Bungie’s current activity notices before planning a specific run.
Will Destiny 2 receive another seasonal content roadmap?
Bungie states that June 9, 2026 was the final planned live-service content update. Its September 17 statement discusses restoring vaulted campaigns, destinations and raids, which is a restoration focus rather than a promise of the former seasonal cadence.
Which game has better combat, Anthem or Destiny 2?
Anthem had the more distinctive movement fantasy through Javelin flight, hovering and vertical traversal. Destiny 2 is the better practical combat choice because its weapons, abilities and encounters remain playable and connected to rewards.
Which game has better progression and loot?
Destiny 2 by current access. Its activities, triumphs and rewards still provide progression routes. Anthem’s gear and Javelin progression can only be discussed historically because the online service that supported them has ended.
What endgame remains in Destiny 2 after June 9, 2026?
Bungie’s support material identifies raids, dungeons, Pantheon challenges, destination activities, triumphs, rewards and social activities as retained parts of the game. The exact availability of individual activities can change, so verify current notices for a specific activity.
Is Anthem’s combat still worth studying if the game is offline?
Yes, as a design case rather than a playable recommendation. Its Javelin suits made flight, hovering and vertical positioning central to combat, offering a distinct example of movement shaping a looter shooter’s identity.
