If Windows says aolog.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the Citrix client rather than downloading the DLL separately.
The file is described in public file metadata as the “Citrix Always On Logging DLL.” It is not a Windows system file and should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another application’s folder.

What the aolog.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because aolog.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because aolog.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting aolog.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading aolog.dll.”
- “The file aolog.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “This application failed to start because aolog.dll was not found.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that aolog.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another dependency required by the Citrix installation is missing or damaged.

C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA Clientaolog.dll
The exact path varies between machine-wide and per-user installations. Public inventories also list aolog64.dll, but Citrix does not clearly document the architecture relationship for every release. Do not substitute one file for the other.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Citrix Workspace
Time needed: 10–20 minutes, plus the download time
This is the most likely fix because aolog.dll belongs to the Citrix client, not to Windows.
Check whether Citrix is installed
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Citrix Workspace or Citrix Receiver.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the entry.
If Windows offers Modify, Repair, or a similar option, use it first. Follow the installer prompts, then restart Windows and test Citrix again.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the client:
- Select Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Citrix Workspace from the official Citrix Workspace downloads page.
- Use the release required by your employer or Citrix administrator.
- Run the installer and complete setup.
- Restart Windows again.
Do not automatically choose the newest Current Release if your organization requires a specific Long Term Service Release, or LTSR. A managed Citrix environment may depend on a particular release or installation policy.
Use Control Panel if Settings does not list Citrix
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Citrix Workspace or Citrix Receiver.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the organization-approved Citrix Workspace package.
If the regular uninstall leaves the installation in a broken state, Citrix installers may support these commands from an elevated Command Prompt:

CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /uninstall
For a silent uninstall:
CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /silent /uninstall
Some supported newer installers also provide:
CitrixWorkspaceApp.exe /CleanInstall
/CleanInstall removes leftover files and registry values before installing. Use it only with the Citrix installer version that documents and supports the switch.

What success looks like
The error should disappear when you launch Citrix Workspace, a published desktop, or a published application. The repaired installation should contain its own matching files in the Citrix installation directory.
If the error remains, note the exact executable named in the message and continue with the checks below.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a Citrix file, especially after an update or a change in endpoint-security policy.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
aolog.dll, Citrix, or the executable named in the error. - If the file was quarantined, do not immediately restore an isolated copy.
- Contact your organization’s administrator if the computer is managed.
- Repair or reinstall Citrix using the approved installer.
If a security product confirms that the file belongs to the verified Citrix installation, an administrator may restore it according to the organization’s security policy. Reinstalling the complete client is safer than replacing only the quarantined DLL.
If the detection returns after reinstalling, leave the file quarantined and escalate the detection. Do not download a replacement from an unrelated DLL archive.
Fix 3: Check for a wrong or incomplete Citrix installation
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Multiple Citrix versions can remain after upgrades, failed removals, or profile migrations. Windows may then launch an old executable that expects files from a different release.
Check these points:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for both Citrix Workspace and Citrix Receiver.
- Remove obsolete or duplicate entries only if your organization does not require them.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the approved Workspace package again.
- Test the same Citrix shortcut that produced the error.
Do not copy aolog.dll from an old Receiver folder into a newer Workspace folder. Files from different releases may not match, even when their names are identical.

A historical public inventory identifies one aolog.dll build as 32-bit and lists a separate aolog64.dll in some Workspace installations. Those records are not a universal specification for current systems. Install the complete matching package instead of guessing which architecture the individual DLL should have.

Fix 4: Reset a damaged Citrix user profile
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Use this step when Citrix works for another Windows account, or when the installation appears intact but only one user sees the error.
Citrix provides a per-user cleanup utility. A common machine-wide path is:
"C:Program Files (x86)CitrixICA ClientSelfServicePluginCleanUp.exe" -cleanUser
To run it:
- Close Citrix Workspace and any published applications.
- Press Windows + R.
- Paste the command.
- Press Enter.
- Sign in to Citrix Workspace again.
- Test the affected application.
The path can differ for a per-user installation. The cleanup removes accounts, cached files, saved passwords, and user-level settings. It is therefore a configuration reset, not a first-line replacement for a missing DLL.

If only one Windows account is affected, testing with a new Windows profile can help distinguish a user-profile problem from a damaged machine-wide installation.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components if the installer fails
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
aolog.dll is not identified as a protected Windows component, so System File Checker is unlikely to recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when the Citrix installer fails, Windows servicing is damaged, or other Windows components also report errors.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Citrix repair or installation.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If either command reports that it could not complete, restart Windows and run the failed command again. Persistent servicing errors should be handled before retrying the Citrix installation.

Fix 6: Update related drivers only when the error identifies one
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Driver repair is not a first-line fix for an error specifically naming aolog.dll. Do not update random drivers hoping to replace a Citrix file.
Use this step only if the same dialog or Event Viewer entry separately identifies a display, network, storage, or other driver problem:

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category named in the error.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Reinstall or repair Citrix afterward.
If the device has a warning icon, open Properties → General and record the device status before changing anything. If Windows cannot find a driver, obtain it from the computer or device manufacturer rather than a random driver archive.

Do not start with:
regsvr32 aolog.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable public evidence that aolog.dll is a self-registering COM server.
Registering an ordinary runtime DLL does not restore a missing file, repair a Citrix installation, or restore a missing dependency. Use regsvr32 only if Citrix support specifically instructs you to use it for a particular release.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading aolog.dll from a random DLL website can provide:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong Citrix release
- The wrong architecture
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- A file that does not match the installed executable
It may also hide the real problem, such as antivirus removal, an incomplete upgrade, or a missing dependency. Use the complete Citrix Workspace installer supplied by Citrix or approved by your organization.
Do not place the file manually in System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated program directory.
Causes of aolog.dll errors

Advanced checks if reinstalling does not work
Check the exact path in the error message. Then inspect:
- Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application
- Citrix installer logs
- The Citrix installation directory
- Antivirus quarantine history
- Whether the installation is per-user or per-machine
- Whether another Windows account can launch Citrix
Citrix installation logs may be under a Citrix logs directory in C:Program Files (x86)CitrixLogs or in the user’s local Citrix log directory, depending on the installation.

If the file exists but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, the missing item may be a dependency. Do not replace arbitrary runtime files. Provide the exact error, executable path, Citrix version required by your organization, and relevant logs to the Citrix administrator.
