kbdarmph.dll Missing: Restore the Windows Input Component Safely

kbdarmph.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component for the Armenian Phonetic keyboard layout. If Windows says the file is missing, corrupted, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file normally belongs under %windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system files use %windir%SysWOW64 through Windows file-system redirection. Microsoft identifies the Armenian Phonetic layout with keyboard identifier 0002042B and documents how Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs from its system directories.

What the kbdarmph.dll error means

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because kbdarmph.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because kbdarmph.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting kbdarmph.dll.”
  • “kbdarmph.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not prove that the application displaying the message owns or ships this file. A program may trigger the error while Windows is loading an input component, or the application may be loading an incorrect local copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can encounter the message even if you never type Armenian. Windows may retain an input-layout registration after a language change, update, upgrade, cleanup operation, or incomplete language-feature installation. A damaged component store can also affect a system file that you do not actively use.

Question Accurate answer
What is it? The Armenian Phonetic keyboard-layout DLL
Is it third-party software? No, it is associated with Microsoft Windows
Where should it be? Normally %windir%System32; 32-bit redirection may involve %windir%SysWOW64
Does every Windows installation contain it? Not necessarily; optional language and input components can differ
Should you register it? No. regsvr32 is not the routine fix for a keyboard-layout DLL
Should you download it separately? No. Restore it through Windows servicing or official installation media

Exact versions, sizes, hashes, and architecture depend on the Windows build. Do not treat a version listed for one release as universal.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Start with Windows Update because a pending update or incomplete servicing operation may be the cause.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
  6. Test the application or input feature again.

If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below. Do not copy a DLL from another computer at this stage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as the source for protected system files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. This can take time and may appear to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test again.

If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the problem may involve a language feature, quarantine event, or application-specific loading path.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again first. Then retry SFC. For persistent failures, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log and use matching official Windows installation media as a repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:D:sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess

Replace D: with the installation-media drive letter, and use media matching the installed Windows edition and build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which component is damaged can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the authoritative repair path.

Fix 3: Add the Armenian Phonetic keyboard again

If the problem began after removing a language or keyboard, reinstalling the input layout may restore its optional component.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Open Language & region.
  4. Find the relevant language and click its More options button.
  5. Select Language options.
  6. Under Keyboards, click Add a keyboard.
  7. Select Armenian Phonetic.
  8. Restart Windows and test the affected feature.

If Armenian is not listed:

  1. Return to Language & region.
  2. Select Add a language.
  3. Search for Armenian.
  4. Install the required language features.
  5. Open its Language options.
  6. Add Armenian Phonetic under Keyboards.

A full language pack is not always required for a keyboard layout, but installing the matching language may be necessary when the layout is unavailable. Adding the keyboard can restore an optional input component, but DISM and SFC are still the general repair path for damaged protected Windows files.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined a genuine system file, or malware may have placed an altered copy on the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Click Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections involving kbdarmph.dll or Windows system files.
  6. Do not restore the file merely because an application requests it.

Restore a quarantined file only when you have confirmed that it is a genuine Microsoft system file, its location is a normal Windows system directory, and the detection is demonstrably false. Do not disable antivirus to copy a downloaded DLL.

If the error began immediately after malware removal, select Scan options and run a Full scan. For stronger suspicion of an active infection, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Afterward, repair the file through DISM and SFC instead of restoring an untrusted replacement.

Fix 5: Check the file location and digital signature

A genuine system copy should be in a Windows system directory and should identify Microsoft as its signer.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

where /r "%windir%" kbdarmph.dll
dir "%windir%System32kbdarmph.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64kbdarmph.dll"

Not every command will return a file, particularly when an optional keyboard component is not installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the signature of a found System32 copy, open PowerShell and run:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32kbdarmph.dll"

Check the result:

  • Status should indicate a valid signature.
  • The signer should be Microsoft.
  • The path should be under the Windows directory.
  • A copy in a game folder, application folder, download directory, or user-profile temporary folder deserves suspicion.

Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit location or the reverse. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files used through WOW64.

If the Windows copy exists but an application still reports the error, inspect that application’s folder and launch context. It may be loading an altered local copy, or the message may actually identify a dependent module rather than the file named in the message.

Fix 6: Update the affected application and its drivers

Although kbdarmph.dll is a Windows keyboard-layout component rather than a normal application runtime, an outdated program can mishandle Windows input registration.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

First update the affected program using its own Help, About, or Check for updates menu. If it is a game or packaged application, repair or reinstall it only from the developer’s official installer or the Microsoft Store listing that supplied it.

For hardware-related input problems, update drivers through Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, when driver updates are offered. You can also check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs one.

Avoid forcing an unrelated driver update to solve a Windows keyboard-layout DLL error. Hunting through many driver versions is usually unnecessary here. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported outdated drivers, but installation through the full version is optional and updating Windows components remains the appropriate fix for kbdarmph.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore

If the error began after a recent update, cleanup, language removal, or software installation, System Restore may reverse the change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  3. Review Scan for affected programs.
  4. Select Next, then Finish.
  5. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It cannot help if no suitable restore point exists.

Fix 8: Reinstall the current Windows version

Use this when DISM, SFC, language repair, Defender checks, and System Restore do not resolve persistent component-store damage.

On supported Windows 11 systems:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.

This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. If the option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and choose the repair or in-place upgrade path carefully. Back up important files before major repair work.

What not to do

Do not download kbdarmph.dll from a DLL website

A downloaded copy can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, or contents. It may also be malware. Placing it in an application folder can hide the original problem and cause the application to load an unsafe local copy.

The safe sources are Windows Update, the installed Windows component store, official Windows installation media, and Windows repair tools.

Do not run regsvr32

Keyboard-layout DLLs are loaded by the Windows input system and expose keyboard-layout entry points such as KbdLayerDescriptor. They are not ordinary COM or ActiveX libraries that require self-registration. Running regsvr32 is therefore not a routine repair and may only produce another misleading error.

Do not assume Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is missing

kbdarmph.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, game middleware component, or ordinary application dependency. Installing those packages is not the correct first response.

FAQ

Is kbdarmph.dll safe?

A genuine copy should be Microsoft-signed and located in a Windows system directory. A copy in an application folder or temporary user directory should be investigated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Armenian installed?

Only if you need the Armenian Phonetic input layout. You may add it through Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Language options. However, reinstalling Armenian is not a substitute for DISM and SFC when Windows files are corrupted.

Is there a 32-bit and 64-bit version?

Windows architecture and redirection determine which copy is used. Do not manually substitute files between System32 and SysWOW64.

Why does an application mention this file?

The application may be triggering Windows input initialization, loading a bad local copy, or reporting a dependent-module failure. The message alone does not prove that the application ships kbdarmph.dll.

What if the error returns after repair?

Check Defender Protection history, verify the file path and signature, inspect the application’s directory for a local copy, and note any recent update or language-feature change. If corruption persists, use matching installation media or Windows repair reinstall rather than repeatedly replacing the DLL manually.
