“The program can’t start because apimswincrtstdiol110.dll is missing from your computer.” The filename apimswincrtstdiol110.dll is not the normal Microsoft system filename, so identify the application requesting it before copying or renaming any replacement file.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list to choose the right starting point:

  • The error appears when one program or game launches: repair or reinstall that application first.
  • The message names api-ms-win-crt-stdio-l1-1-0.dll: install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime and required Windows updates.
  • The affected program is 32-bit: install the x86 runtime, even if Windows is 64-bit.
  • The affected program is 64-bit: install the x64 runtime.
  • The file disappeared after an antivirus detection: inspect quarantine and reinstall the application from its official source.
  • Several programs report runtime or system DLL errors: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
  • The error remains after every repair: collect the executable path, Windows version, application architecture, and antivirus event before contacting the application developer.

What apimswincrtstdiol110.dll actually is

The normal Microsoft Universal C Runtime API-set filename is:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

api-ms-win-crt-stdio-l1-1-0.dll

It provides standard C input/output functionality used by Windows applications. Microsoft documents the Universal C Runtime as part of Windows 10 and later, while older supported Windows versions receive it through Windows Update or supported redistributable deployment. See Microsoft’s Universal CRT documentation.

apimswincrtstdiol110.dll is an altered, unhyphenated name. Microsoft does not document it as an official Windows system filename or standalone redistributable. It may be a private copy bundled by an application, a failed installer artifact, or a deceptive file name.

A public malware-analysis record has associated this exact name with a SysTools PST Merge Inspector installation path alongside other renamed Universal CRT files. That does not prove every copy is malicious or that SysTools officially intended the name. Treat the requesting program and the file’s location as more important than the filename alone.

Do not rename api-ms-win-crt-stdio-l1-1-0.dll to apimswincrtstdiol110.dll. The two names are not verified to be interchangeable, and a renamed DLL can create a different loading or compatibility problem.

1. Identify the application that requested the file

The error usually appears while launching an application, installer, updater, or game. Note exactly when it occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the affected shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field on the Shortcut tab.
  4. Record the executable name and folder.
  5. Select Open File Location if available.

If the error appears during installation, identify the installer file and where it came from. If it appears during a game launch, use the game launcher’s repair or verification feature before changing Windows files.

Check Task Manager

If the program opens briefly and then fails:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Open the Details tab.
  3. Look for the application executable.
  4. Right-click it and choose Open file location.

The application’s folder tells you whether the missing dependency belongs to a specific product. A DLL inside an application folder is not automatically a Windows system file.

2. Repair or reinstall the affected application

Because this filename appears to be application-specific, this is the safest first repair.

Use the Windows repair option

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the program on Windows 10.
  6. Choose Advanced options if shown.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Launch the program again.

Some desktop applications do not provide a Windows repair button. In that case, open the program’s own installer or uninstaller and choose Repair, if offered.

Reinstall from the original source

If repair fails:

  1. Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the installer from the application developer or publisher.
  4. Run the installer.
  5. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator if the normal installation fails.
  6. Restart again and test the program.

For games, use the launcher’s file repair function first:

  • Open the game launcher.
  • Open the game’s settings or manage menu.
  • Choose Verify, Scan and repair, or Repair files.
  • Wait for the check to finish.
  • Launch the game again.

A clean reinstall is the definitive fix when the application shipped a private copy of the file or its installer failed to deploy a dependency.

3. Install the correct Microsoft runtime

If the message names the standard api-ms-win-crt-stdio-l1-1-0.dll, or the application documentation requires Visual C++, install the supported Microsoft package from the latest Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.

Use the application’s architecture, not just the Windows architecture:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 32-bit application: install the x86 package.
  • 64-bit application: install the x64 package.
  • Both types of applications: installing both x86 and x64 is often appropriate.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application still needs the x86 runtime. Installing only x64 will not repair a 32-bit program.

Microsoft’s current direct packages are:

To install or repair the package:

  1. Download the required installer from Microsoft.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Choose Install or Repair, depending on what the installer displays.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the affected application.

Older applications can require a legacy Visual C++ generation. Multiple redistributable generations can coexist, so do not remove older entries casually. Use Microsoft’s supported-download page to identify the required package rather than replacing DLLs manually.

On Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, install all applicable Windows Updates before troubleshooting the UCRT. Microsoft explains that older supported systems receive the Universal C Runtime through Windows Update or supported deployment methods.

4. Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have removed a private application DLL, especially if the file was found in an unusual folder.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review detections matching the application or DLL.
  5. Do not restore the file automatically.
  6. Confirm that the application came from its official publisher.
  7. If the publisher confirms the file is safe, restore it according to the security product’s instructions.
  8. Prefer reinstalling the application from a verified source after restoring or removing the detection.

Also inspect the file’s location, digital signature, publisher information, and parent executable. A copy in a temporary folder, user profile subfolder, or unrelated program directory deserves additional scanning.

Run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan if the file appeared unexpectedly or multiple suspicious files are present.

5. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when several applications report missing Windows components, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or the runtime installation fails. They are not a substitute for repairing an application that bundles its own private DLL.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  4. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the application.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, run the commands again after Windows Update completes and review the result before trying another application reinstall.

While you are manually checking component health and repeating repairs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the file is application-specific.

6. Check 32-bit and 64-bit details

A runtime architecture mismatch is easy to miss:

  • Program Files commonly contains 64-bit applications.
  • Program Files (x86) commonly contains 32-bit applications.
  • A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows uses 32-bit runtime components.
  • A 64-bit program requires 64-bit runtime components.

These folder conventions are clues, not absolute proof. To inspect an executable:

  1. Right-click the executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab and record the product information.
  4. Check the application’s documentation or installer requirements.
  5. Install the matching Visual C++ architecture.

Do not copy files between System32, SysWOW64, and an application folder. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components.

7. Update Windows and application drivers

Install pending Windows updates before retrying the runtime:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when requested.
  6. Check again until no further updates are offered.

A missing Universal CRT file is not normally a graphics-driver problem. However, if the error occurs after a game update or alongside graphics initialization failures, update the relevant driver from the GPU manufacturer or Windows Update.

To check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.

Do not remove working Visual C++ packages just because a driver update is available.

If manually checking each device and driver version is taking too long, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its full-version installation is optional, and a driver update will not replace the application-specific repair required for this DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 is for registering DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A Universal C Runtime or API-set DLL is normally not a COM server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running this command against the file:

regsvr32 apimswincrtstdiol110.dll

will not install a missing runtime. It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result is expected for a DLL that is not designed for COM registration. Do not use regsvr32 unless the application’s official documentation specifically identifies the file as a COM component that requires registration.

Avoid standalone DLL download sites

Do not download apimswincrtstdiol110.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32 or the application folder. That can provide:

  • Malware disguised as a system component
  • The wrong architecture
  • An incompatible or altered build
  • A file with no valid publisher signature
  • A replacement that bypasses Windows servicing
  • A copy that hides the real application installation problem

Use the Microsoft Visual C++ downloads, Windows Update, and the affected application’s official installer instead. Never assume that renaming the standard Microsoft DLL is a valid repair.

When to use System Restore or Windows recovery

Consider System Restore when:

  • The application worked recently.
  • The failure began after a driver, update, or software installation.
  • A restore point exists from before the failure.
  • DISM, SFC, and application repair did not help.

Open Control Panel, search for Recovery, select Open System Restore, and choose a restore point before the problem began. Personal files are not normally removed, but applications and drivers installed after the restore point may be affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reset Windows as the first response to a single application error. Identify the requesting executable and reinstall that program first.

FAQ

Is apimswincrtstdiol110.dll a genuine Microsoft filename?

It is a real searchable filename, but it is not the normal Microsoft filename documented for the Universal C Runtime. The standard name is api-ms-win-crt-stdio-l1-1-0.dll.

Can I rename the standard DLL to this name?

No. Renaming is not a verified repair and can cause loading conflicts or conceal a damaged application installation.

Which program installed this file?

The exact owner cannot be determined from the filename alone. Find the executable that displays the error and inspect its installation folder. A public analysis record associates the name with a SysTools PST Merge Inspector path, but that does not establish a universal ownership relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install x86 or x64?

Install x86 for a 32-bit application and x64 for a 64-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, install both when you use applications of both architectures.

Does regsvr32 fix the error?

Usually not. Runtime and API-set DLLs normally do not require COM registration.

What if the error remains after installing Visual C++?

Repair or reinstall the application, verify its files, check antivirus quarantine, and confirm that the application is using the correct runtime architecture. If the problem continues, record the full error, executable path, Windows build, application version, architecture, and security-software event for the developer.
