1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsapitrap.dll is an obsolete third-party file associated with Norton CleanSweep, not a normal Windows component. If Windows reports that apitrap.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair or remove an old CleanSweep installation rather than download a replacement DLL.
Norton CleanSweep was an older program for uninstalling software and removing leftover files. It was originally developed through the Quarterdeck product line and later distributed by Symantec. The file may remain referenced after CleanSweep was partially uninstalled, cleaned up, quarantined, or damaged.

Before you start: do not download apitrap.dll
Do not obtain apitrap.dll from a random DLL download sites website. A standalone file can contain malware, belong to a different CleanSweep release, use the wrong architecture, or depend on other files that are also missing. Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 often leaves the original startup or registry problem untouched.

Fix 1: Check whether Norton CleanSweep is still installed
Time needed: 5 minutes
First determine whether the missing file belongs to software that is still present.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Norton CleanSweep, CleanSweep, or another old Quarterdeck or Symantec utility.
- If it appears, note whether the program opens normally.
- If it does not appear, open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for
CleanSweep,Norton, andSymantec.
If CleanSweep is still installed and you need it, do not replace only apitrap.dll. The installation may require matching configuration files, registry entries, and dependent libraries.
Use the original installer or installation media to reinstall CleanSweep over the existing installation, then restart Windows. If the installer offers Repair, choose that option. Afterward, start the program or the application that previously produced the error.

If the installer cannot run on your current Windows version, remove CleanSweep instead of forcing a mismatched DLL into a system folder.
Fix 2: Remove CleanSweep and its stale startup reference
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most appropriate path when CleanSweep is no longer needed.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Locate CleanSweep or the associated Norton entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the program does not appear in Settings, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the old CleanSweep entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
After restarting, check whether the message has disappeared. A startup error that vanishes after removal confirms that Windows was trying to load a leftover CleanSweep component.
If CleanSweep is already gone but the error remains, inspect startup items:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly associated with CleanSweep or an old Symantec utility.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable unrelated entries merely because their names are unfamiliar. The historical CleanSweep configuration could also have used the Windows AppInit_DLLs mechanism. Editing that registry area is advanced and can affect multiple programs.
If you must inspect it:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
regedit. - Press Enter.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Select File, then Export, and save a registry backup.
- Search for
apitrap.dllwith Edit > Find. - Remove or correct a value only when it clearly belongs to the obsolete CleanSweep installation.
Do not delete an entire registry key just because it contains the filename. If you cannot identify the owning program, leave the value unchanged and seek help from a technician.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and Windows Security
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If the error began immediately after an antivirus scan, disk cleanup, or security product update, the file may have been quarantined or deleted.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any item associated with CleanSweep or
apitrap.dll.
Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
- You recognize the CleanSweep installation
- The file came from your own trusted installer or backup
- Your security software identifies it as safe
- You intend to repair or remove the complete CleanSweep installation
Do not disable antivirus protection to download a replacement DLL. If the file is in an unexpected modern application folder, run a scan before trusting it.
For a deeper check, select Scan options in Windows Security and run Microsoft Defender Offline when appropriate. Microsoft’s malware guidance is available through Windows Security malware troubleshooting.

Fix 4: Run DISM and System File Checker only for wider Windows damage
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
apitrap.dll is not a protected Windows system file. Therefore, SFC and DISM normally will not restore it. Use these tools when other Windows components are also failing, Windows features behave incorrectly, or several unrelated system files report errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC order in its System File Checker instructions.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, that does not disprove the CleanSweep diagnosis. It may simply mean Windows is healthy while the third-party application is incomplete.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it finds, while repair actions require the full version; reinstalling or removing CleanSweep remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
On Windows 11, Microsoft also provides a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is appropriate for broader Windows problems, not as the first response to an isolated CleanSweep error. See Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore is useful if the error appeared after installing software, a driver, an update, or a cleanup utility.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish.
System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can undo applications, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error started because CleanSweep was uninstalled incorrectly, restoring Windows may bring back the old reference without restoring a complete working installation. If that happens, uninstall CleanSweep properly after the restore.
Fix 6: Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or a driver automatically
Time needed: 5 minutes
The name apitrap.dll does not show that the file belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a device driver. Installing unrelated runtimes is unlikely to repair it.
Microsoft’s current Visual C++ packages are named vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe, but there is no evidence that apitrap.dll is part of those packages. Install a Visual C++ Redistributable only when the failing application separately reports a Visual C++ runtime error. Microsoft lists the supported packages on its Visual C++ Redistributable page.
Likewise, Device Manager is not a normal repair route for this file:
Recommended Free Tools
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for devices with a warning icon.
- Update a driver only when the device itself has a problem.
Do not search Device Manager for apitrap.dll; it is an application library, not a device driver.
When a separate device problem does require manually hunting through hardware vendors, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers, while driver installation requires the full version; it does not replace the need to repair or remove CleanSweep for this error.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 registers self-registering ActiveX or OLE components. It does not repair an ordinary application library merely because the filename ends in .dll.

Avoid commands such as:
regsvr32 apitrap.dll
They may produce another error, especially when the file is 32-bit, the wrong copy is selected, or the DLL was never designed for registration. Microsoft describes the tool’s actual purpose in its regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Only use regsvr32 if documentation for the complete application specifically says that its component is a self-registering control and identifies the correct file and command.
32-bit and 64-bit considerations
CleanSweep is legacy software, and the available evidence does not establish a verified bitness, file size, or current release for apitrap.dll. Do not assume that a 32-bit DLL belongs in System32 or that a 64-bit copy belongs in SysWOW64. Windows uses those folder names in a way that often confuses users.
A DLL from another CleanSweep release may have the same filename but different exports, dependencies, or registry configuration. Restore the complete matching installation from trusted media instead of mixing files between versions.
Why the error appears
The most likely causes are:
| Situation | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| CleanSweep was partially removed | Windows still searches for its library | Reinstall from trusted media, then uninstall cleanly |
| A startup reference remains | A stale CleanSweep entry loads at startup | Remove CleanSweep or its confirmed startup reference |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | A security scan removed or isolated it | Review quarantine, scan, then repair or remove CleanSweep |
| An old Explorer or Internet Explorer conflict occurred | Legacy CleanSweep code was incompatible with older Windows components | Remove or replace the obsolete installation |
| Several Windows components fail | The problem may be broader than CleanSweep | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC |
| A recent update or installation triggered it | A system change may have broken the old configuration | Consider System Restore |
Historical Microsoft documentation recorded Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Apitrap.dll and a similar Internet Explorer message involving CleanSweep 4. Modern systems are more likely to show loader messages such as apitrap.dll is missing, Error loading apitrap.dll, or apitrap.dll could not be loaded.
If the error remains after CleanSweep is removed
Check when the message appears:
- During startup: inspect Startup apps and confirmed CleanSweep registry references.
- When launching one old program: identify that program’s installation and repair or remove it.
- After antivirus activity: review Protection history and run a scan.
- After a Windows update or driver installation: consider System Restore.
- With unrelated Windows failures: run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Also check the executable path shown in the error or Event Viewer. Another old Symantec component may be requesting the file, even when CleanSweep itself is no longer listed in Installed apps.
FAQ
Is apitrap.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the old Norton CleanSweep application and is not a normal Windows system DLL.
Can I download apitrap.dll safely?
Do not download it from a DLL repository. Use original installation media, a trusted backup, or repair and removal steps for CleanSweep.
Should I install Visual C++?
Not for this filename alone. There is no evidence that apitrap.dll belongs to a Visual C++ Redistributable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Will SFC restore apitrap.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while apitrap.dll is a third-party application file.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
A verified current architecture is not established here. Treat the file as part of a legacy application and restore the complete matching installation.
What if CleanSweep was already uninstalled?
Remove its confirmed stale startup reference. Do not restore the DLL merely to silence a leftover entry.
Is regsvr32 required?
Normally no. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What is the safest final fix?
If CleanSweep is still required, restore the complete installation from trusted media. If it is obsolete, remove CleanSweep and its confirmed startup reference rather than preserving an isolated legacy DLL.
