Apple’s new iPad mini, announced October 26, 2026, is the first model in the line with an OLED display. It keeps the mini’s compact footprint while expanding the screen to 8.5 inches, trimming bezels by 24 percent, adding A20 Pro performance, and introducing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and IP67 water-and-dust resistance. U.S. pricing starts at $699 for Wi-Fi or $849 for Wi-Fi + Cellular, with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. Preorders open Wednesday, October 28, and deliveries and store availability begin Friday, November 6.
For owners of an older mini, the OLED panel, brighter HDR capability, thinner 5.4 mm enclosure, landscape Center Stage camera, and faster wireless hardware are the meaningful changes. Apple’s speed figures are company claims from September 2026 testing, so independent reviews are still needed to judge battery life, thermals, durability, and long-term OLED behavior.

How good is the new OLED display?
The OLED panel gives each pixel individual lighting control, enabling true black levels and a stated 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. It covers the P3 wide-color gamut, reaches up to 1,200 nits peak brightness and 600 nits full-screen brightness, and can dim to 1 nit for dark rooms.
The larger 8.5-inch screen does not make the tablet physically wider because Apple reduced the bezels by 24 percent. Buyers can also select a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare. That option should appeal to readers, artists, and field workers under bright lights, although Apple has not published a separate brightness or battery figure for the nano-texture version.
How much faster is A20 Pro?
Apple claims the A20 Pro delivers up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times faster graphics, and up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than the previous generation. Apple also says the chip more than doubles unified-memory bandwidth. The 512GB configuration adds a dual 16-core Neural Engine.
These percentages are vendor claims based on Apple testing conducted in September 2026, not independent benchmark results. They should matter most for demanding games, video work, 3D applications, and on-device Apple Intelligence features; everyday reading and note-taking will not necessarily feel proportionally faster.

What changed in the design and durability?
The enclosure is 5.4 mm thick and retains the mini’s compact footprint while fitting the larger display. Midnight and starlight are the announced finishes. IP67 certification means the tablet was tested for dust protection and temporary immersion in controlled laboratory conditions. Apple warns that resistance can decline with normal wear, and liquid damage is not covered by its warranty.
A redesigned Acoustic Display system places display-coupled woofers and hidden tweeters in the enclosure. Apple says this produces more bass, higher volume, and clearer treble while helping seal the body. Independent testing will determine how much the change improves games, video, and calls in practice.

Which cameras and connectivity features are new?
The 12MP front camera sits on the landscape edge and supports Center Stage, keeping a caller in frame as they move. The 12MP rear camera adds Smart HDR 4, 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second, and an Adaptive True Tone flash that Apple says improves photos and document scans.
Apple’s N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Apple also says it improves AirDrop and AirPlay performance and reliability on 5GHz Wi-Fi networks. Cellular versions use the C2 modem system, which Apple claims provides up to 50 percent faster cellular data and improved power efficiency compared with the prior generation.

Does it support Apple Pencil Pro?
Yes. Both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) work with the new iPad mini. Pencil Pro costs $129 and adds squeeze controls, barrel roll, and Find My support. The $79 USB-C model is the lower-cost option for handwriting, marking documents, and basic sketching.

Who should upgrade to the OLED iPad mini?

Creators, doctors, field-service workers, small-business owners, and gamers are among the groups Apple identifies as benefiting from the combination of size and performance.

What does Apple Intelligence do on the new mini?
The tablet ships with iPadOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Siri AI is described as rolling out in beta with personal-context understanding, onscreen awareness, and broad world-knowledge answers. Availability varies by language and region; Apple says Siri AI is not currently available in the European Union, and some server-backed capabilities have daily usage limits.
What remains unknown before buying?
Apple has not established independent battery-life figures, sustained-performance behavior, repairability, long-term OLED burn-in resistance, or real-world drop and water performance. Will Siri AI work on an iPad mini in Europe?
