Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program or Windows feature fails: Microsoft Store, a Store app, Start menu, an MSIX package, or an installer.
- When the error appears: at sign-in, while installing or removing an app, after Windows Update, or only when launching one program.
- The exact wording: “missing,” “not found,” “specified module could not be found,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- Your Windows architecture: open Settings > System > About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
- Whether Event Viewer reports an AppXSvc crash rather than a missing file.

Do not download appxdeploymentserver.dll from a random DLL site. This is a Microsoft Windows component, and the safest repair is Windows servicing, not copying a file into an application folder.
What appxdeploymentserver.dll does
appxdeploymentserver.dll is the AppX Deployment Server DLL, a Microsoft Windows component used by the AppX Deployment Service, whose service name is AppXSvc. Windows relies on this service to deploy, register, update, and remove AppX, MSIX, and Microsoft Store applications. Microsoft’s Windows component records include the file among the files shipped with Windows, and Microsoft documents AppX package administration through Add-AppxPackage.

The normal native location is:
%SystemRoot%System32AppXDeploymentServer.dll
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes may be redirected to the 32-bit system directory, normally:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64AppXDeploymentServer.dll
That does not mean you should copy both versions manually. The file must match the Windows build and the architecture of the component using it.

This is not normally supplied as a standalone Visual C++ package, DirectX runtime, .NET installer, game dependency, or general redistributable. If a program displays the error, it may simply be calling a Windows Store or packaged-app function when the underlying Windows component is damaged.
Check whether the file is genuine
If the file exists, verify it before attempting repairs:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Find
AppXDeploymentServer.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and use Details to check that the signature is valid.
- Open the Details tab to view the installed file version.
The version depends on the Windows release and installed cumulative updates. Historical Microsoft records show the file in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and related Windows Server packages, but an old version is not a universal target for a current PC. A file that looks plausible but has the wrong build, architecture, signature, or dependencies can still fail.
If the file is absent, has an invalid signature, or is in an unexpected application directory, continue with Windows repair rather than downloading a replacement.
Identify the type of failure
The same filename can appear in several different failures.
A genuine missing or corrupt DLL
A dialog such as the following usually indicates missing or damaged Windows component files:
The program can't start because appxdeploymentserver.dll is missing from your computer.
It may also say:
The code execution cannot proceed because appxdeploymentserver.dll was not found.
These messages can appear while launching a Store app, Windows component, installer, or packaged desktop application. They do not prove that the program itself owns the DLL.

An AppXSvc crash
Event Viewer may instead report entries such as:
Faulting application name: svchost.exe_AppXSvc
Faulting module name: appxdeploymentserver.dll
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Here, the DLL is the module where the service fault surfaced. That entry alone does not prove the file is missing or that it is the sole cause. The underlying problem could involve a package, deployment database, service state, update regression, or broader Windows corruption.
An AppX package problem
If Windows works normally but one Store or MSIX app fails to install, update, register, or remove, the DLL may be functioning correctly. The affected package, its registration data, the Store cache, or the user profile may be the real problem.
A Windows Update regression
If the problem began immediately after an update and affects Store apps, Start menu behavior, or AppXSvc, check Windows Update for a newer cumulative update. Microsoft has documented AppX Deployment Service problems that were addressed through later updates, including the issue described in KB5043131.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Pending servicing updates may contain the correct version of the DLL or a repair for AppXSvc.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Try the affected app or operation again.
If Windows Update reports an error, still proceed to the DISM and SFC steps below. Do not use an old DLL version simply because its filename matches.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupt, or invalid appxdeploymentserver.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. It can pause at a percentage for some time. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by System File Checker.
Run System File Checker
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart the PC and test the failing operation.
Microsoft’s system-file repair guidance recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC says it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test. If it says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
If DISM cannot find repair files, Windows may need a matching installation source. Microsoft documents this approach for repairing Windows Update corruption. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build; do not point DISM at a random system or DLL download.
Repeating SFC indefinitely is not useful when the component store itself is damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it detects, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM/SFC remain the Microsoft-supported path.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected app
Use this step when Windows components appear intact and only one Store or packaged app fails.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Click Repair and test the app.
- If Repair does not help, choose Reset and test again.
Resetting can remove the app’s local data and settings. If the app still fails, uninstall it from the same menu and reinstall it through Microsoft Store or the application publisher’s official distribution channel.
For an MSIX or AppX package supplied by an administrator or publisher, use the signed package intended for your Windows build. PowerShell’s Add-AppxPackage installs a package; it does not install appxdeploymentserver.dll separately. Microsoft’s Add-AppxPackage documentation explains the package installation command.
If only package removal or provisioning fails, investigate that package rather than replacing the Windows DLL.
Fix 4: Check AppXSvc and deployment logs
Event Viewer can distinguish a service crash from a loader failure.

Check application crashes
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for errors at the time of the failure.
- Check for
svchost.exe_AppXSvc, the faulting module name, the exception code, and the faulting module path.
A faulting-module entry naming appxdeploymentserver.dll is evidence of where the crash surfaced, not conclusive proof that the file must be replaced.
Check AppX deployment failures
In Event Viewer, open:
Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > AppXDeploymentServer > Operational
Look for events matching the failed installation, registration, update, or removal. Record the package name and operation. A package-specific error points toward app repair, reinstall, provisioning, or a user-profile issue.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate Windows file, although you should not assume that happened without evidence.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand a relevant detection and inspect its path and classification.
Use Microsoft’s Protection History guidance before restoring anything. Restore or allow a file only after confirming its location and Microsoft signature and determining that the detection is incorrect. If malware is suspected, scan first and do not restore a file merely because its name is familiar.
After resolving the detection, run DISM and SFC again. The servicing tools can restore a missing protected component through the correct Windows source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 appxdeploymentserver.dll
regsvr32 calls a DLL’s DllRegisterServer entry point and is intended for DLLs that support COM-style registration. It is not a general repair command for Windows service or runtime components. You may receive an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, and the command will not repair AppXSvc.
Microsoft describes the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFix 7: Consider drivers only for broader system symptoms
A graphics, storage, or chipset driver is not the normal owner of appxdeploymentserver.dll. Do not begin by replacing drivers unless Device Manager shows a problem or the same period includes broader crashes, display failures, storage errors, or failed device updates.
To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories containing the affected hardware.
- Right-click a device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device-status error.
- Open the Driver tab and use Update Driver only when appropriate.
- Prefer the PC or device manufacturer’s official driver for the exact model.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies, while driver installation through the full version is optional; avoid changing drivers when the logs point specifically to AppXSvc or an AppX package.
Windows Features are similarly not a direct repair for this DLL. Use Settings > System > Optional features > More Windows features only when a separate Windows feature is known to be disabled or damaged.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or repair reinstall
If DISM, SFC, updates, and app repair do not resolve persistent AppXSvc failures, escalate without downloading individual files.
System Restore
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. You can also reach it through Windows Recovery Environment > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. See Microsoft’s System Restore instructions.
Reinstall the current Windows version
On Windows 11, open:
Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. Microsoft explains the process in its repair-reinstall instructions.
If Windows cannot use that option, perform an in-place repair with official installation media and select Keep personal files and apps where available. Back up important data first.

- Do not download this DLL from an unofficial repository.
- Do not copy it from another PC into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Do not choose a version solely because it is newer.
- Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
- Do not treat a faulting-module entry as proof that the DLL alone is defective.
- Do not install a Visual C++ or DirectX package expecting it to supply this Windows component.
A copied file can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, signature, language state, or dependencies. It can also hide the real problem, such as a failed update, corrupt component store, quarantined file, or broken AppX package.
FAQ
Is appxdeploymentserver.dll safe?
A copy in the Windows directory should be Microsoft-signed and appropriate for the installed Windows build. Verify its path and signature in Properties. A copy inside an unrelated application folder deserves additional scrutiny.
What is AppXSvc?
AppXSvc is the service name for AppX Deployment Service. It handles deployment, registration, updating, and removal of AppX, MSIX, and Store applications.
Should I download the DLL?
No. Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Downloading a standalone copy commonly creates a build or architecture mismatch and does not repair the underlying Windows component.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does the message say “specified module could not be found”?
That wording can mean the named DLL is absent, but it can also indicate that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Confirm the file’s path and signature, then use Windows servicing rather than replacing it blindly.
Will SFC fix every AppXSvc crash?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows files, but an AppXSvc crash can instead involve an AppX package, deployment database, user profile, or Windows Update regression. Use Event Viewer and the AppXDeploymentServer operational log to narrow the cause.
Which version should I install?
You should not install a version manually. The correct version is the one delivered for your current Windows release, architecture, and cumulative-update level. Let Windows servicing restore it.
