cnblm4.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, not a Windows system file or Microsoft runtime. The safest fix for a cnblm4.dll missing, not found, or load error is to remove the affected printer and reinstall its complete driver package for the exact model.
What this file actually does
cnblm4.dll is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software and is reported as part of Canon’s print-monitor system. A print monitor helps Windows communicate with a printer while jobs are processed, so the error may appear when printing, installing a printer, removing a driver, or starting Windows.

It is not a general-purpose DLL that applications should download independently. The correct copy is installed alongside the Canon driver, with its supporting files, driver package information, registry entries, and print-spooler configuration.

Causes matched to symptoms
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears when printing | Damaged or incomplete Canon driver | Remove and reinstall the exact Canon driver |
| Error appears during Windows startup | Stale Canon print-monitor reference | Remove the unused printer and old driver package |
| Error began after antivirus action | File was quarantined or deleted | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| Installer says the module is missing | Wrong package, missing dependency, or incompatible architecture | Use the model-specific Canon package and check Windows architecture |
| Error began after a Windows or driver update | Legacy driver incompatibility or failed update | Check Windows Update, roll back where available, or use System Restore |
| Other Windows programs also fail | Possible Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC as a secondary repair |
Before changing anything, note the exact error text, the Canon printer model, whether the printer is still used, and whether the message appears at startup, during printing, or during installation.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution when the printer is still needed.
Remove the printer
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer associated with the error.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows if the removal process requests it.
If more than one Canon printer is listed, identify the one that was installed before the error began. Do not remove a printer that is still needed unless you have its installation details or can reinstall it.

Remove the old driver package when necessary
If Windows continues trying to load cnblm4.dll, the printer may have been removed while its driver remained installed.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2and press Enter. - Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that option.
- Restart the computer.
If Windows refuses to remove the package because it is in use, cancel pending print jobs first:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select each relevant printer.
- Open its print queue.
- Cancel all pending jobs.
- Try the driver removal again.
Do not delete random files from System32, SysWOW64, or the DriverStore. Windows manages those locations through its driver installation system.
Install the correct package
Use the official Canon support site and search by the exact printer model. Select the package for your edition of Windows and its processor architecture, then run the installer as an administrator if needed.
Windows can also supply a compatible driver:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- Select the printer when it appears.
- Follow the setup prompts.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official driver page for printer drivers. On Windows 11, you can also use Microsoft’s printer removal and connection steps.
The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL error, a test page prints, and the error does not return after restarting Windows.

If the installer fails, confirm the model number, remove older Canon packages, disconnect the printer during installation if Canon’s instructions request it, and try again. A legacy driver may not support the current Windows build.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver packages and identifying stale hardware drivers. Its free scan shows what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A security product may have removed a legitimate driver component, or it may have detected a modified or unsafe file.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnblm4.dllor the Canon driver. - Review the detection details and file location.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The printer is a trusted Canon device.
- The driver came from Canon’s official installer.
- The detection has been verified as a false positive.
- You are restoring the complete driver installation, not an isolated DLL.
Do not disable protection to restore an unknown file. Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again. The safer approach is to remove the driver and reinstall it from Canon’s official package. See Microsoft’s Protection history guidance.
If the detection returns after reinstalling, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and contact Canon or Microsoft support with the detection name and driver package details.

A Canon driver package must match the way Windows and the printer software communicate. Check your system before choosing a driver:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM-based.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation, or the reverse. Do not choose a file based on a third-party record’s version or size because public records for cnblm4.dll do not agree on those details.
On an ARM-based Windows computer, a traditional manufacturer installer may fail even when the printer itself is supported. Microsoft recommends adding the printer through Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device, unless Canon supplies ARM-specific instructions.
If the printer is old and no compatible package exists, use the driver offered through Windows Update or the standard Windows printer setup. If that provides only basic printing, advanced Canon monitoring or maintenance features may not be available.

Fix 4: Remove a stale Canon reference if the printer is no longer used
If the error appears during startup but the Canon printer was already uninstalled, Windows may still be trying to load an old print-monitor entry.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove every unused Canon printer.
- Press Win+R, enter
printui.exe /s /t2, and press Enter. - Open the Drivers tab.
- Remove the corresponding Canon driver package.
- Restart Windows.
If the message continues, check Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Open Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > PrintService.
- Review recent Operational events around the time of the error.
Avoid deleting registry values or print-spooler files without a backup and a clear identification of the obsolete entry. A reported association with a Canon “BJ Language Monitor4” entry does not prove that every installation uses the same name or configuration.
If you need the printer again later, reinstall it from the exact Canon package rather than restoring individual files.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components as a secondary step
cnblm4.dll is not verified as a Windows-protected component, so System File Checker is not the primary repair. Use these commands when other Windows files also appear damaged, Windows Update is failing, or the printer problem followed broader system corruption.

Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first, followed by SFC. These tools repair Windows components and protected system files; they may not restore a third-party Canon DLL.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired and related Windows problems improve. If the commands report that no integrity violations were found, return to the Canon driver because the issue is probably not Windows component corruption.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the broader repair process easier when you are repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan identifies reported problems, while repairs are completed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the Canon driver.

Do not download cnblm4.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into a Windows folder. A standalone file can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have incompatible dependencies, lack the correct signature, or leave the Canon driver’s INF, catalog, registry, and spooler configuration inconsistent.

Microsoft documents it for registering self-registering OLE controls and DLLs that provide the required registration entry point. A printer language-monitor component may not support that entry point, and running:
regsvr32 cnblm4.dll
can produce an entry-point or dependency error without reinstalling the printer driver. Use the complete Canon installer instead.

Is cnblm4.dll a Windows file?
No. Available records associate it with Canon inkjet printer-driver software. It should not be treated like a missing Microsoft runtime or a Windows component.
Can I fix it by copying the DLL to System32?
No recommended fix uses manual copying. The correct architecture, dependencies, driver registration, and print-monitor configuration must be installed together.
Should I use System File Checker?
Only as a secondary diagnostic when broader Windows corruption is suspected. SFC is not established as a way to restore this Canon-specific file.
Why does the error say “the specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. Reinstalling the complete driver is more reliable than replacing the visible file.
What if I use Windows 11?
Remove the old printer under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, then select Add device or install the exact Canon package. Windows 10 follows the same general repair path through Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
What if I no longer own the Canon printer?
Remove the unused printer and its driver package with printui.exe /s /t2. If the startup error remains, use PrintService logs to identify the stale reference before making advanced changes.
