aswrawfs64.dll is normally an Avast Antivirus component, not a Windows system file. If Windows says aswrawfs64.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair the Avast installation that owns it instead of downloading an individual DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows files, record:
- Which program or executable triggers the message: Avast, a startup item, Boot-Time Scan, or another application.
- When it appears: during startup, while Windows is running, during an Avast scan, or after Avast was uninstalled.
- The complete error text: especially whether it says “not found,” “missing or corrupted,” or “the specified module could not be found.”
- The file location: if Windows, Event Viewer, or a crash report provides one.
- The architecture:
aswrawfs64.dllis reported as a 64-bit Avast module. A 32-bit replacement is not a valid substitute.
Do not delete the file, copy a replacement into C:WindowsSystem32, or install a copy from a DLL download sites site. The file must match the Avast build, related services, and dependencies installed on that computer.

What aswrawfs64.dll does
The name is associated with Avast’s Raw disk access library. Avast’s Boot-Time Scan can use raw disk access to inspect filesystem data before normal Windows processes and file APIs are fully available. This helps the scanner examine threats that may be difficult to remove after Windows starts.
The 64 indicates that the file is intended for a 64-bit component. It does not mean that the file belongs to Windows, DirectX, .NET, or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.

There is no verified evidence that aswrawfs64.dll ships with Windows itself. Its expected owner is an Avast Antivirus installation. Exact versions, sizes, hashes, and default installation paths can vary, so do not identify a file by an old catalog entry alone.
A genuine file should normally be located within an Avast installation directory and have a valid Avast-related digital signature. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, a user-writable directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves a malware scan before it is trusted.
Fix 1: Repair Avast from Windows
Repair is the quickest and most targeted fix for a missing, damaged, or partially updated Avast component.

- Select Apps and Features on Windows 10 or Installed apps on Windows 11.
- Find Avast in the application list.
- Select its menu, or select the application and choose Uninstall.
- When Avast Setup opens, select Repair rather than removing the product.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows if Avast requests it.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
If the repair completes and the message no longer appears, the Avast component was probably incomplete or damaged. Do not separately register or replace the DLL.
If Avast is not listed, or the repair option fails, continue with a clean removal and reinstall.
Fix 2: Check Avast Quarantine
Avast or another security product may have quarantined the file. Restoring it without checking its origin can reintroduce malware, so verify the item first.
In Avast:
- Open Avast.
- Select Protection.
- Open Quarantine.
- Locate the entry for
aswrawfs64.dll. - Check its original path and detection details.
- Restore it only if the path belongs to the trusted Avast installation and the Avast installation itself is legitimate.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Use Restore and add exception only when you are confident that the file is genuine. An exception reduces protection, so it should not be used merely to silence a detection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Avast repeatedly quarantines the file, do not repeatedly disable protection. Keep the item isolated, update Avast, run a full malware scan, and submit the file or detection through Avast’s official support or analysis process.
If the file is found outside the Avast installation, leave it quarantined until it has been examined. The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
Fix 3: Remove and reinstall Avast cleanly
Use Avast’s official Avast Uninstall Tool when normal repair is unavailable, an update was interrupted, or an earlier uninstall left broken components behind.
- Download the uninstall utility from Avast’s official website on a trusted computer.
- Run
avastclear.exeas administrator. - Follow the utility’s instructions to remove Avast, including its Safe Mode removal workflow when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current Avast installer from Avast’s official website.
- Install Avast again.
- Restart once more if requested.
- Test the startup action or scan that previously failed.
Reinstalling the complete product is safer than copying one DLL because it restores the matching services, configuration, signatures, and supporting files together.

If installation fails, first make sure Windows is updated, temporarily remove conflicting antivirus products according to their vendors’ instructions, restart, and run the Avast installer again. Keep a record of any installer error rather than repeatedly attempting partial installations.
Fix 4: Remove stale Avast startup entries
If Avast has already been removed, the error may come from a leftover launcher, scheduled task, shortcut, or service that still points to the old installation.
Identify what is calling the file:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Check Startup apps for an Avast entry.
- Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu.
- Review tasks under Task Scheduler Library and vendor-related folders.
- Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application for the executable named in the error.
- Right-click a shortcut that triggers the message and select Properties.
- Inspect the Target field for an old Avast path.
Do not delete arbitrary registry entries or Windows services based only on the filename. If an entry clearly belongs to an incomplete Avast installation, use Avast’s official uninstall utility, restart, and verify that the stale entry is gone. If you still need Avast, reinstall it after cleanup instead of manually recreating its files.
Fix 5: Interpret the exact error correctly
Common cataloged variants include:
-
“This application failed to start because aswrawfs64.dll was not found.”
The named file is absent from the location expected by the calling Avast executable, or the installation path is no longer valid.Quick wins for a faster PC:

“The file aswrawfs64.dll is missing or corrupted.”
The file may be absent, damaged, blocked, or mismatched with the installed Avast build. -
“A required component is missing: aswrawfs64.dll. Please install the application again.”
Reinstall the owning Avast product rather than downloading the DLL separately. -

This can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL cannot load. -

These messages can differ between Windows versions and calling applications. If reinstalling Avast does not help, capture the full dialog, the executable that triggers it, and any path shown in Event Viewer or a crash report.
A dependency failure is especially important. If the message names another DLL, a runtime, or a status such as 0xc000007b, troubleshoot that item separately. A 64-bit Avast module cannot be repaired with a 32-bit file.

Fix 6: Check for disk or filesystem problems
A failure during Avast Boot-Time Scan deserves more attention than a normal startup popup, particularly if Windows also reports disk errors, freezes, corrupted files, or unusually slow access.
- Back up important files.
- Restart and run the Avast scan again only if the disk appears stable.
- Check Settings → System → Storage → Advanced storage settings → Disks and volumes for the affected drive.
- Review Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System for storage or filesystem errors.
- If errors continue, stop repeated scans and have the disk checked with appropriate Windows or manufacturer diagnostics.
Raw-disk scanning operates below normal Windows file access, so storage or filesystem corruption can interfere with Boot-Time Scan. Repairing Avast remains necessary, but a failing drive must be addressed as a separate problem.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader corruption
aswrawfs64.dll is an Avast-owned file, so System File Checker normally cannot recreate it. Use Microsoft’s repair sequence when Windows itself has broader symptoms, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, or multiple protected system files reporting errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting for damaged Windows components or rerunning SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Avast remains the definitive fix for this Avast-owned file.
If DISM and SFC report that Windows is healthy, stop repeating them and return to Avast repair. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party security product.

Fix 8: Check a separate driver or runtime error
Device Manager is not the normal repair location for aswrawfs64.dll, because this is a user-mode Avast library rather than a standard Windows device driver. Use it only if the same incident also shows a device error.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the exact status code.
- Update or reinstall that device’s driver from the computer or device manufacturer.
- Restart and test again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help when you are manually hunting through many driver versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it will not replace the Avast component that owns aswrawfs64.dll.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because this filename appears. Microsoft runtimes are relevant only when the complete error identifies a missing runtime or dependency. If that happens, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable.
Why common DLL fixes do not apply
Do not use random DLL download sites sites
A downloaded copy may be malware-modified, unsigned, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the installed Avast release. It may also hide the real problem, such as a broken Avast update, a missing dependency, or a stale startup entry.
The safe sources are the Avast installation already repaired on the computer and Avast’s official installer or uninstall utility.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose repair locations. Copying a 64-bit Avast DLL into a Windows directory does not recreate Avast’s services, configuration, dependencies, or permissions.
Do not run regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore an ordinary private runtime library or repair an incomplete Avast installation. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration command, not a missing-file recovery tool. See the Microsoft regsvr32 reference.
When to use System Restore or professional help
System Restore may be reasonable if the error began immediately after a known update or system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a replacement for cleanly repairing Avast.
Seek professional malware or disk diagnostics when:
- the file is outside the expected Avast installation;
- its digital signature is missing or invalid;
- multiple security tools detect it;
- Boot-Time Scan fails alongside disk errors;
- Avast repair and clean reinstall both fail;
- the error names a different executable after Avast was removed;
- Windows shows repeated crashes, corrupted files, or storage warnings.
FAQ
Is aswrawfs64.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence shows that it ships with Windows itself. It is associated with Avast Antivirus and its raw-disk scanning functionality.
Is aswrawfs64.dll malware?
The name alone cannot answer that. Check the file’s path, digital signature, calling executable, and Avast installation. Scan an unexpected copy rather than automatically restoring or deleting it.
Should I download aswrawfs64.dll?
No. Repair or reinstall Avast from its official source. An isolated download can be unsafe and may not match the installed product.
Recommended Free Tools
What if Avast Boot-Time Scan triggers the error?
Repair Avast first. If the scan also reports disk or filesystem problems, back up your data and check the drive before repeatedly running Boot-Time Scan.
What if Avast is already uninstalled?
Look for stale startup, scheduled-task, shortcut, or service entries. Use Avast’s official uninstall utility to clean remaining components, restart, and reinstall Avast only if you still need it.
Can SFC fix this file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while aswrawfs64.dll belongs to Avast. Use SFC and DISM only when Windows has broader corruption symptoms.
What information should I provide if the error remains?
Record the complete error, the executable that raises it, when it appears, the path shown in logs, whether Avast is installed, and whether the file has a valid signature. That information distinguishes a damaged Avast installation from a missing dependency, stale entry, disk problem, or malware.
