Start by recording three details before changing anything:
- Which program fails: a desktop application, Microsoft Store app, game launcher, Visual Studio, MakeAppx, or App Certification Kit.
- When it fails: at Windows sign-in, when launching one program, after an update, or while installing software.
- Which architecture is involved: 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, application, and SDK tool.
appxpackaging.dll is a Windows AppX/MSIX packaging component, not a normal Visual C++ or DirectX runtime. If Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupted, or unable to load, repair the Windows component or the specific application or SDK that is failing rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Windows uses appxpackaging.dll for AppX and MSIX package operations. These include creating, reading, writing, querying, and deploying Windows application packages.

The library is associated with Microsoft’s AppxPackaging API. It is used by Windows app infrastructure and by packaging tools that work with .appx and .msix files.

The protected Windows copy normally resides at:
C:WindowsSystem32AppxPackaging.dllon a 64-bit Windows installationC:WindowsSystem32AppxPackaging.dllfor the native system architecture on 32-bit WindowsC:WindowsSysWOW64AppxPackaging.dllfor 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows
The names can be confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components used by 32-bit processes.
A separate copy may also be installed with the Windows SDK or Windows App Certification Kit. That copy supports developer and packaging tools such as MakeAppx.exe; it is not necessarily interchangeable with the protected Windows copy.
Check which program is actually failing
Do not begin by copying a DLL into every folder that contains an executable. First identify the failing process.
Read the complete error and note whether it says:
- “The program can’t start because appxpackaging.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because appxpackaging.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading appxpackaging.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “appxpackaging.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “AppxPackaging.dll is corrupted.”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependent DLLs is missing, blocked, or the wrong architecture.
Find copies under the Windows directory with an elevated Command Prompt:
where /r "%windir%" appxpackaging.dll
To open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the command above.
Check the native Windows copy in PowerShell:

Select-Object FullName, Length, VersionInfo
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32AppxPackaging.dll"
A legitimate system copy should be in the expected Windows directory and normally have a valid Microsoft signature. A Microsoft signature does not make a file in an arbitrary application folder the correct replacement for the system copy.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this first when:
- The file is missing from the Windows system directory.
- Several Windows or AppX functions fail.
- A Microsoft Store app, package installation, or Windows feature is affected.
- The file exists but has an invalid signature or appears damaged.
- The issue began after an update, cleanup operation, malware incident, or system failure.
Before repairing, install pending Windows updates:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Then run DISM followed by System File Checker. The order matters because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files or found no integrity violations. Test the program or Windows feature that originally failed.
If DISM reports that repair files cannot be found, make sure Windows Update is working. If it is not, Microsoft supports using matching installation media or another repair source with /Source and /LimitAccess. Do not use a DLL downloaded from an unrelated website as the repair source.
Running these commands manually is safe but can be difficult to repeat while you compare logs and determine what changed. If DISM and SFC complete successfully but only one program still fails, continue with the application-specific fixes below.
Fix 2: Repair one desktop application or game
If Windows works normally and only one desktop program reports the error, assume that program’s installation is incomplete or damaged until proven otherwise.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
If no repair option exists, download the installer from the application developer’s official source and reinstall the program. Use the same architecture as the program unless its documentation says otherwise.
For a game launcher, use its verification feature before reinstalling the whole game. For Epic Games:

- Open Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Select Manage.
- Select Verify.
Other launchers use differently named options such as Verify files, Scan and repair, or Repair installation.
The repair worked if the same executable starts without the DLL error. If reinstalling the application restores a copy inside its own folder but the error returns, check antivirus history and architecture rather than repeatedly copying files.
Fix 3: Repair a Microsoft Store or packaged app
For a Microsoft Store, UWP, or MSIX application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data, so use it only after Repair fails.
Then update Store applications:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If the Store app fails only under one Windows user account, test it under another account. A damaged user profile can prevent an otherwise healthy packaged application from starting.

If the error appears only when using Visual Studio, MakeAppx.exe, Windows App Certification Kit, or another packaging tool, repair the matching developer installation.
In Visual Studio Installer:
- Close Visual Studio and related tools.
- Open Visual Studio Installer.
- Find the installed Visual Studio version.
- Select Modify.
- Confirm the required Windows development workload and SDK components.
- Select Repair if the installer offers it.
- Restart Windows and test the packaging tool.
For a separately installed Windows SDK or App Certification Kit, use Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select the relevant entry, and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall as available. Reinstall it from Microsoft’s official SDK installer if repair is unavailable.
Do not replace an SDK copy with a random file from System32. SDK binaries can have different dependencies, manifests, and architecture requirements.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system or application file. Check the event before restoring anything.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
AppxPackaging.dllor the affected application. - Check the file path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when the path, signature, and origin confirm that it is the genuine file. If the detection concerns an unknown copy in an application directory, do not restore it automatically. Run a full scan, and use an offline scan if malware is suspected.
After a confirmed false positive, repair Windows with DISM and SFC or reinstall the affected application from its official installer. Windows may detect a restored item again if its security decision has not changed.

Fix 6: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Architecture mismatches are common when a developer tool or manually copied DLL is involved.
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit system copy is associated with SysWOW64, while native system files are in System32.
Do not copy the 64-bit file into a 32-bit application directory. Instead:
- Identify whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether the installed SDK or runtime matches it.
- Repair or reinstall the application or SDK using its correct architecture.
- Retest without changing the Windows system directories manually.
If an application reports the error even though appxpackaging.dll exists, a missing dependency may be the real cause. Review the application’s installer log. For deeper investigation, Microsoft’s Process Monitor can show which DLL load operation failed.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It calls a DLL registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Microsoft does not provide a registration procedure for appxpackaging.dll, and it is not a normal self-registering component. Running commands such as these is therefore unlikely to repair the problem:

They may produce an error or change nothing. Use Windows servicing, application repair, or SDK repair instead.
Fix 8: Update drivers only when the failing installer points to one
Driver reinstallation is not a normal fix for appxpackaging.dll. Consider it only when the error is emitted by a driver package, hardware installer, or software installation that explicitly identifies a driver component.
If that is the case:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a manufacturer-specific driver, use the hardware maker’s official support package and match the Windows architecture.

Avoid DLL download and copy fixes
Do not download appxpackaging.dll from random DLL sites, extract it from an unknown ZIP file, or copy it from another computer.
That approach can introduce:
- Malware or a tampered file
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependent files
- A private SDK copy in place of the protected system copy
- A mismatch that breaks after the next update
It often does not fix the root cause because the missing item may be a dependency, an application installation, a damaged component store, or an architecture mismatch.
Use these recovery sources instead:
- Windows Update and Windows servicing tools
- Matching Windows installation media for advanced DISM repair
- The official installer for the affected application or game
- The official Windows SDK or Visual Studio Installer
- Microsoft Store repair and reinstall options
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is not a direct fix unless the error also names one of their runtime files or the application’s official support instructions require that runtime.

If normal repairs fail and the issue clearly began after a recent system change, System Restore may help:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore changes system files, settings, registry data, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. Back up important data first.
As a final supported recovery path, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation. If the system is healthy and only one application fails, reinstall that application instead of repairing Windows broadly.

Is appxpackaging.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is Microsoft’s native AppX/MSIX Packaging API library and normally belongs to Windows. Developer installations such as the Windows SDK and App Certification Kit can also contain separate copies.
