embree.dll is associated with Intel Embree, a third-party ray-tracing library used by rendering software, game engines, graphics applications, and some development tools. It is not a Windows system DLL and should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32.

Which fix applies to you
Use the path shown in the error message to choose the right repair:

- The path points to a game: verify the game files in its launcher.
- The path points to Unity, Unreal, Adobe, or another desktop application: use that program’s Repair option, updater, or official installer.
- The file disappeared after an antivirus alert: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring or reinstalling it.
- The file exists but Windows still reports it as missing: repair the application’s dependencies, especially Microsoft Visual C++ and Intel oneTBB files.
- The error began after moving to a different PC or changing hardware: check 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility and CPU requirements.
- Several unrelated programs have failures: run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. These repair Windows components, not usually a private application copy of
embree.dll.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL from a random website.

1. Identify which application owns embree.dll
The filename alone does not identify one universal binary. Different applications can bundle different Embree builds, and the current upstream package uses library names based on embree4. An older or application-bundled file may still be named embree.dll.
Find the full path in the error dialog. Common locations include:
- A Unity installation directory
- An Unreal Engine or game
Binariesdirectory - An Adobe application subfolder
- The private folder of a rendering or 3D application
- A folder under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86)
The path tells you which installer should restore the file. A copy beside the affected application is normal. A copy found only in System32 or SysWOW64 should not automatically be trusted.

- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search the application directory for
embree.dll.
Do not replace the file yet. First establish which program needs it.
2. Repair or verify the owning application
This is the most likely fix because the application needs a particular Embree build and its matching companion files.
For a Steam game
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Start the game again.
If Steam restores files, the game should launch without the missing-file message. If verification reports no problem, restart Steam and try again. Persistent errors may require uninstalling and reinstalling the game to a new folder.

For an Epic Games game
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish.
- Launch the game again.
For desktop software
Look in the application’s Start menu folder, launcher, or installer for Repair, Modify, Update, or Reinstall.
If Repair is available:
- Close the affected application.
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify or Repair, if offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If no repair option exists, download the installer from the application developer or sign in to the official launcher that manages the installation. Install the same application again rather than copying an unrelated Embree file.

The correct repair restores embree.dll, its dependencies, and the version expected by that application.
3. Check Windows Security Protection history
Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate application file, or it may correctly block a malicious file using a familiar name. Do not restore embree.dll merely because the filename looks legitimate.

- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any entry referring to
embree.dllor the affected application. - Check the detected file path and threat details.
A file in the application’s official installation directory is different from an unexpected copy in a temporary folder or system directory. If the application was installed from its official source and the file is verified as safe, reinstalling the application is usually safer than manually restoring the quarantined copy.
If Windows Security identifies a real threat, leave the file quarantined and run a full scan. Restoring it can reintroduce malware.
4. Repair Visual C++ and application dependencies
Windows can report that embree.dll is missing even when the file is present. The loader may actually be unable to load a dependency such as tbb.dll, tbbmalloc.dll, or a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime.
First, check the application directory for companion files. Do not download individual copies of TBB or Embree files. Restore the complete package through the owning application’s installer.
Then repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable:
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Open the entry matching the application’s architecture.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Repair.
- Repeat for the other installed architecture if appropriate.
- Restart Windows.
On 64-bit Windows, both x86 and x64 applications can be installed, so both runtime architectures may be needed. The runtime must match the application, not merely the operating system.
If Repair does not help, install the current supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages from Microsoft. Keep older runtime families installed because an older application may depend on them.

Check the application architecture
A 64-bit embree.dll cannot repair a 32-bit application, and a 32-bit file cannot be substituted into a 64-bit program. Do not mix Embree 2, Embree 3, Embree 4, x86, and x64 builds.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or reports a bad image, suspect corruption or an architecture mismatch. Reinstall the application with the installer intended for your system and that program version.
5. Update the application, graphics drivers, and Windows
If the error started after a program update, the update may have been incomplete. Restart the application’s launcher and install any pending update.
Update Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the PC.
For graphics or hardware-related failures, update the display driver through the computer manufacturer, graphics-card manufacturer, or Windows Update.
You can also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
A driver update will not replace a missing application-private embree.dll, but it can address failures that began after a graphics or hardware change.
Manually hunting through Device Manager and matching hardware packages can be time-consuming when several drivers are outdated. 6. Check for a CPU instruction-set problem
Not every Embree-related startup failure is a missing-file problem. A crash report that identifies embree.dll as the faulting module, especially after a hardware change, may indicate that the installed build uses CPU instructions the processor does not support.
This can produce an illegal-instruction failure rather than a missing-DLL dialog.
Use these steps:
- Confirm the exact error text.
- Check whether the failure began after replacing the processor or moving the installation to another PC.
- Update the affected application.
- Check the application’s CPU requirements.
- Update relevant chipset and graphics drivers.
- Contact the application developer if the latest compatible build still fails.
Do not try to solve an illegal-instruction crash by copying embree.dll into System32.

If only one application fails, Windows component corruption is less likely. If several unrelated applications fail, Windows Update behaves incorrectly, or built-in programs are also damaged, run Microsoft’s repair tools.

Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM should run before SFC. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files. They normally do not restore an application’s private embree.dll; if the application still fails, return to its Repair, Verify, or reinstall process.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show repair findings; its full version performs the repair, but the owning application’s official reinstall remains the definitive solution for its bundled DLL.
8. Do not use regsvr32 for embree.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registerable DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. embree.dll is normally a runtime library, not a COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command is generally inappropriate:
regsvr32 embree.dll
It will not restore a missing dependency, correct an x86/x64 mismatch, or rebuild an application installation. If Windows says the entry point is missing, close the message and repair the owning application instead.
9. Avoid random DLL downloads and System32 copying
Do not download embree.dll from a generic DLL download sites website. The file may contain malware, belong to a different application, use the wrong architecture, or lack the companion TBB and Visual C++ files the loader also needs.
Never copy a replacement into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
Use only the exact file supplied by the affected application’s official installer or, for developers, a matching official Embree package and build. Even then, place it in the application’s intended directory, not a Windows system folder.
FAQ
Is embree.dll malware?
The filename itself is legitimate and associated with Embree, but authenticity depends on the file’s location, signature, source package, and scan result. A familiar filename does not prove that a particular copy is safe.
Does Windows include embree.dll?
No. It is not normally a Windows component. Legitimate copies generally remain beside the application that uses them or in that application’s private runtime directory.
Which programs use embree.dll?
Rendering and 3D applications, some Unity Editor versions, Unreal Engine-based software and games, Adobe graphics software, and other programs that bundle Embree may use it. The exact build is application-dependent.
Why does Windows say it is missing when I can see the file?
A dependency may be missing. Common examples include TBB files and the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. Architecture mismatch, corruption, permissions, or an incomplete installation can produce similar messages.
Should I put embree.dll in System32?
No. Restore it through the application that owns it. System32 copying can load the wrong version or hide the missing dependency.
