The arc.dll message does not identify one specific Windows file. The same filename has been associated with unrelated applications, including McAfee QuickClean and UpdateMyDrivers, and has also appeared in a documented Trojan payload. The safe fix is therefore to identify the program that requested the file and its full path before replacing anything. Repair or reinstall that application first; scan for malware when the path or circumstances are suspicious. Use Windows repair commands only when other system files are also failing.

Do not download a random copy of arc.dll or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A file from an unknown source can be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build, an incompatible version, or malicious.

What does “arc.dll is missing or not found” mean?

arc.dll is a Dynamic Link Library filename, not a unique Windows component. An application loads a DLL when it starts or when a feature is used. If that application cannot find the expected file, Windows may show messages such as “The program can’t start because arc.dll is missing from your computer” or “arc.dll was not found.”

The filename alone cannot tell you whether the file belongs to a game, a utility, Windows itself, or unwanted software. The parent application, the directory in which the file was expected, and any security alert provide the identity needed for a safe repair.

Why can the same arc.dll error have completely different causes?

References place an arc.dll in a McAfee QuickClean program folder, list another with UpdateMyDrivers, and include an arc.dll under a user-profile MicrosoftIdentities path among files dropped by Trojan.Win32.INJECTOR.EOW. An unknown-vendor arc.dll process has also been flagged as potentially bad. Those are different situations that should not be repaired with one generic download.

What you observe What it may indicate Safest first response
Error appears when one named program starts The program’s installation is incomplete, damaged, or missing its private DLL Use that program’s Repair or Reset option, then reinstall from its official publisher if needed
An existing file is in an unexpected user-profile folder A leftover component, unwanted software, or a malware payload Review security alerts and quarantine, then run a Windows Security scan before restoring or replacing files
Several Windows features report missing or corrupted files Possible corruption of protected Windows components Run DISM first and SFC second from an elevated Command Prompt
Error follows a failed update or interrupted installation Only part of the parent application was installed Repair the installation or uninstall and reinstall from the official distribution channel

What should I record before changing anything?

Write down the complete error text and the exact application, game, launcher, or installer that displays it. If a dialog, Event Viewer entry, or security product shows a location, copy the complete path, including the drive letter and every folder. Note whether the file is reported as missing, quarantined, or present but unable to load.

  • Record the application’s name and version, if shown in its About screen or installer.
  • Capture the full arc.dll path if one exists; a normal program directory and an unexpected profile directory imply different risks.
  • Note whether the message appeared after an update, a new download, a crash, or a security alert.
  • Do not delete a quarantined file or restore it until you know which application owns it and why it was flagged.

How do I repair the application that reports the error?

Repairing the named parent application is more specific and less disruptive than replacing a DLL globally. Windows 11 and Windows 10 expose slightly different labels, but both can provide an application repair path.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings and choose Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the program that displays the error, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when available.
  3. Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish without deleting the application’s data.
  4. Restart the program and test the same action that produced the message.
  5. If Repair is unavailable or the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset. Reset can remove the program’s local settings or data, so back up saves, profiles, templates, or other important files first.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select the affected program, choose Advanced options if shown, and use Repair.
  3. Retest the application. Use Reset only after protecting any local data that the reset may remove.

Some desktop installers do not expose Windows’ Repair or Reset controls. In that case, open the application’s own installer or maintenance utility and choose its repair command, if offered. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from a third-party library site.

When should I uninstall and reinstall the program?

Reinstall when repair or reset fails, the installer is incomplete, or the application was removed while leaving a broken shortcut or registration behind. Obtain a current installer from the publisher or the official distribution channel used to acquire the program.

  1. Back up application data, saved games, profiles, plug-ins, and configuration files. Check where the program stores them; uninstallers do not all preserve data.
  2. Keep license keys, activation details, or account information available.
  3. Uninstall the affected application through Settings > Apps or its official uninstaller.
  4. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it, then install the current package from the official source.
  5. Launch the newly installed copy and test before adding optional plug-ins or copying old configuration files back.

If the application is a game or another product managed by a launcher, use that launcher’s file-repair or verification feature before deleting the entire installation. The exact label varies by publisher; the principle is to let the official client restore the files it owns.

How do I check whether arc.dll could be malware?

Treat the situation as a security investigation when the file is in an unexpected profile directory, appeared after an unsolicited download, or was identified by security software. The documented Trojan entry places an arc.dll in a user-profile MicrosoftIdentities path, which is not evidence that every file with that name is malicious, but it is a reason to investigate rather than restore blindly.

  1. Open your antivirus quarantine or protection history and read the detection name, original path, and action taken.
  2. Run a scan with Windows Security. Allow the scan to remove or quarantine a file only after recording the detection details you may need for the application vendor.
  3. Do not add an exclusion for the file simply to make the application start.
  4. If suspicious behavior continues, disconnect the affected PC from sensitive accounts while you complete scanning and change important passwords from a known-clean device.

A security alert and a missing-file message can occur together: security software may have removed a malicious or unwanted DLL, leaving an application unable to start. Restore the application by reinstalling it from its official source, not by restoring an unverified binary.

Should I run DISM and SFC for an arc.dll error?

Run Windows component repair commands when other Windows features also report corrupted or missing protected files, or when the problem affects multiple unrelated applications. They do not identify which third-party program owns an arbitrary arc.dll, so they are not a substitute for repairing that application.

Microsoft’s documented order is DISM followed by SFC: “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files,” and SFC then scans protected system files and replaces incorrect versions when possible.

How do I run DISM and SFC correctly?

  1. Save work and open Command Prompt with administrator rights. In Windows Search, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. At the elevated prompt, enter the following command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Allow the operation to finish. It may take time and can appear to pause while Windows services the component store.

  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow

Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent and reports its result. Restart Windows, then retest the original application. If SFC reports files it could not repair, keep the exact message for further Windows troubleshooting; do not use it as a reason to download arc.dll from an unknown site.

What if the error remains after reinstalling?

Stop and collect more evidence instead of trying random DLL copies. The next action depends on whether the failure is application-specific, architecture-related, or security-related.

The same application still fails

  • Check that you installed the edition and architecture supported by the application and your Windows installation.
  • Look for an installer log, crash report, or support article from the publisher that names the required component.
  • Temporarily remove optional plug-ins or modifications that load at startup, then test a clean installation.

Different applications now fail

Run Windows Update while support is available for your edition, review recent driver or system changes, and repeat the DISM-then-SFC sequence if protected-file corruption is suspected. A pattern across unrelated programs points away from one application’s private DLL.

The file keeps returning in a suspicious location

Keep it quarantined, run a deeper Windows Security scan, and preserve the detection name and path for the security vendor or a qualified technician. Repeatedly restoring the file can reintroduce the underlying threat.

Does the advice differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10?

The repair sequence applies to both versions: identify the owner, repair or reinstall the owner, investigate suspicious paths, and use DISM followed by SFC only for broader Windows corruption. Microsoft’s SFC guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. That status does not explain an arc.dll message, but it limits future platform fixes and is a reason to plan an upgrade or a supported security arrangement.

Which repair route should I choose?

Route Specificity Trust and risk Reversibility Use it when
Application Repair Targets the program named in the error Uses Windows or the publisher’s files Usually preserves data The program is installed and offers Repair
Application Reset Targets the same program but clears more local state Safer than an unknown DLL, but settings may be removed Backups are needed Repair fails and local data is backed up
Official uninstall and reinstall Recreates the complete application installation Uses the publisher’s distribution channel More disruptive; data and licenses must be protected Repair is unavailable or unsuccessful
DISM then SFC Repairs Windows components globally Microsoft tools; does not establish DLL ownership Low application-data impact Multiple Windows features show corruption
Random DLL download Unknown and often mismatched Unverified source can be malicious Can overwrite or destabilize system files Do not use

What mistakes should I avoid?

  • Do not copy arc.dll into System32 or SysWOW64 just because the message names the file.
  • Do not assume the first search result for the filename is the correct owner or version.
  • Do not disable antivirus protection or create an exclusion to bypass a quarantine alert.
  • Do not run DISM and SFC before recording the application and path; those commands cannot tell you which third-party package is missing.
  • Do not uninstall before backing up saves, profiles, settings, and license information.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks above, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and diagnostic features. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription.

What is the safest order of operations?

Identify the invoking application and full path, investigate any security warning, repair the parent application, and then reinstall it from the official source if repair fails. Use DISM followed by SFC only when the symptoms indicate broader Windows corruption. This order keeps the fix tied to the evidence and avoids introducing an untrusted binary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download arc.dll from a DLL website?

It is unsafe to treat a filename-only download as a repair. The correct file may need a particular architecture, version, and application-specific location, and an unverified package can contain malicious code. Obtain the component through the publisher’s installer or repair process instead.

How can I find which program requested arc.dll?

Start with the window or launcher that displays the error, then check its installation folder and any Event Viewer or installer log entry for a full path. The application name, version, and path together are more useful than the DLL filename alone.

Will System Restore fix an arc.dll error?

System Restore can roll back system settings and some installed components to an earlier restore point, but it may not restore application data or a missing private DLL reliably. It is a fallback for a recent system-wide change, not the first choice when one application can be repaired or reinstalled.

What should I do if Windows Security quarantined arc.dll?

Leave the file quarantined while you record the detection name and original location. Scan the PC, then reinstall the affected application from its official source; restoring the quarantined file without understanding the alert can bring back the same threat.
