Complete it by returning to the contaminated water intake, finding the barrel truck in the swamp, interacting with its cargo to take the required “photo,” then searching the driver’s cab for clues. The quest awards a Spaceport Warehouse Key as a follow-on item, but the key is not required to register the quest completion.
Current quest data lists Life Of A Pharmacist as the prerequisite. The quest was added in Update 1.7.0, and the latest cited update, Live Update 1.39.0, does not change these objectives or locations.

A Toxic Trail objectives
- Return to the water intake below the Water Treatment Control building.
- Search the swamp for traces of the barrel’s origins.
- Take a photo of the barrel truck.
- Search the truck’s trunk for clues about the saboteur’s identity.
The fourth objective is worded as “Search the trunk” in current quest data, but the target is the truck and its cab.

1. Return to the contaminated water intake
Accept A Toxic Trail from Shani before deploying to Dam Battlegrounds. Travel to the Water Treatment Control building, then check its northwestern side in the swamp.

Look for the partially submerged toxic barrel and the nearby drain or water channel—the same contaminated-water area used during the earlier investigation. Walk close to it to update the objective. You do not need to interact with the barrel again.
If nothing happens, confirm that the quest is active through Shani. Reaching the area before accepting the quest does not start the objective and may not produce an interaction prompt.
2. Follow the swamp to the barrel truck
Once the water-intake objective updates, follow the swamp water northwest from the barrel. The truck is nearby, partly submerged in the swamp or river, and is loaded with barrels.

If you have run a long way without finding a dilapidated truck carrying barrels, retrace your route and check the water channel more closely.

3. Interact with the truck to take the photo
Approach the truck’s cargo and barrel area. Look for the yellow interaction markers, then interact with a marked point to complete “Take a photo of the barrel truck.”
This is not a normal camera or photo-mode task. You do not need to equip a camera, aim at the truck, open photo mode, or take a manual screenshot. The game completes the objective through the environmental interaction prompt.
If the prompt is missing:
- Make sure the water-intake objective has already advanced.
- Search beside the truck’s cargo and barrels rather than only checking the front.
- Check the other yellow markers around the cargo if the first interaction does not advance the quest.
4. Search the driver’s cab for the clue
After the photo objective advances, move around to the front of the truck. Find the yellow marker near the driver’s cab or door and interact with it.

This final search produces the Spaceport Warehouse Key and completes the truck investigation. Photographing the cargo alone is not enough; the separate cab interaction is required.

Do you need to extract with the key?
Extraction is not required merely to register the quest objectives, but you should extract if you want to keep the Spaceport Warehouse Key. The commonly cited nearby option is the Central Swamp Lift; treat it cautiously because other Raiders may watch the extraction point.
The key opens locked doors on the second floor of the Shipping Warehouse on Spaceport, on the warehouse’s north side. It is a useful follow-on item, not a separate requirement for completing A Toxic Trail.
Do not confuse it with the Flushing Terminal Key. That is a different item associated with Shani’s follow-up quest, The Stench Of Corruption, on Spaceport.
