The broad praise is for a shooter that makes each run feel uncertain and consequential: players gather loot, face machine threats, and decide how much to trust other people before trying to extract. Reviews also highlighted responsive gunplay and sound cues that help make encounters legible and tense. The aggregate score gives a useful orientation, but it cannot settle whether a reader considers the game’s production choices acceptable.

Tension and unpredictable player encounters
Extraction risk is central to the positive reviews. Looting and getting out are not just steps between fights; the possibility of losing a run’s gains gives encounters weight. Other players make that risk social as well as tactical: a meeting can become cooperation, a standoff, or a betrayal. GamesRadar+’s launch review emphasized tense looting, sound cues, gunplay, and emergent player behavior.

Combat, sound, and machine enemies
Review coverage also praised the feel of the third-person combat and the audio information that helps players judge threats. The ARC machines give fights a PvE dimension alongside the danger posed by other players. In GameSpot’s 9/10 review, Mark Delaney described the game as “an extraction shooter unlike any other, a totally unpredictable, immersive, thrilling story generator directed by the community.” His review disclosed 39 hours of play across PC and Xbox and a publisher-supplied review code; those details describe his review, not a universal measure of play time or an independent test.
Why do some critics disagree?
The sharpest documented dissent is not simply a rejection of the combat loop. Metacritic lists Eurogamer’s review at 40/100 and summarizes its objection to Embark’s continued use of AI voice generation. The same listing recognizes rich PvE combat and a comparatively friendly community as strengths. That makes the disagreement a values-based judgment about a production choice: a critic can see appeal in the play while deciding that the voice-generation issue weighs heavily against recommending the game. The cited evidence is Metacritic’s listing and excerpt, rather than the full Eurogamer review.

There are also narrower usability criticisms. Delaney’s GameSpot review listed limited character-creator options and a hub that functions mainly as a menu space among its drawbacks. Those concerns are more specific than the dispute over AI voices and do not negate his overall positive score.
How do current player ratings compare?
Steam’s user ratings measure player reviews, not professional critics, and can change over time. On October 4, 2026, the Steam store page showed 81% positive across 199,991 English-language user reviews overall, while reviews from the previous 30 days were 53% positive across 2,548 reviews. The recent rating was notably less positive than the lifetime figure at that snapshot; neither percentage should be presented as a critic score or treated as a fixed rating.

Can you play ARC Raiders now?
ARC Raiders launched on October 30, 2025. The listed platforms include PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X; PlayStation’s PS5 page says it is not available for PS4. Embark describes it as an online multiplayer extraction adventure and lists cross-platform social play across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on the official game site, which also links GeForce NOW.
As of the October 4, 2026 information snapshot, Embark had announced a limited free-play period for the full game on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation, running October 8 at 09:00 UTC through October 12 at 08:00 UTC, alongside the Frozen Trail update. That offer is date-bound, so check Embark’s announcement for current availability rather than assuming it remains active.

Embark’s September 30, 2026 anti-cheat update acknowledged cheating as a source of player frustration and said the studio was continuing detection and prevention work. This is relevant to the current online experience, but it does not establish what critics encountered in the launch review build or change the meaning of their scores.
