Are LEGO Video Game Console Sets Worth the Price and Build Time?

By VGSources Team 9 min read

LEGO video-game console sets are worth the money for adults who want a substantial building project and a nostalgic display piece—not for anyone expecting playable electronics. The Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 offers the richer presentation, with a brick-built television and hand-operated scrolling Super Mario Bros. scene. Atari 2600 10306 is a more focused console display built around cartridges, a joystick and three game-inspired vignettes. Your best choice depends on which platform you remember, how much shelf space you have, and the verified price and condition of the set you can actually buy.

Neither set has a standardized, authoritative build-hour figure. Piece count indicates project scale, but sorting habits, building pace and breaks can change elapsed time dramatically. Treat the hours as part of the hobby rather than a fixed specification.

What you are buying when you buy a LEGO console set

These are display models with mechanical or movable details, not replacement game systems. You build a physical replica, arrange its accessories and, in the NES set, turn a crank to animate a scene. The value comes from the construction experience, the finished object and the memories attached to the original hardware and games.

That distinction matters at checkout. A collector who wants an accurate centerpiece for a game room may find the price justified. Someone looking for a console they can connect to a television, load cartridges into or use with modern games will be disappointed. The sets contain no game-playing electronics, software, video output or working cartridge hardware.

LEGO NES 71374 and Atari 2600 10306 compared

Set Documented piece count Documented price context What is included Interaction and function Availability note
LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 2,646 pieces (LEGO, 2020) $269.99 on the US LEGO listing (2020) Buildable NES console, controller, Game Pak cartridge, 1980s-style television and a scrolling Super Mario Bros. scene Hand-operated crank moves the television scene; it is a brick mechanism, not playable hardware LEGO marks it “Retired Product”; current stock and resale prices vary
LEGO Atari 2600 10306 2,532 pieces (LEGO catalog, 2023) $299.99 in the cited LEGO catalog (2023); Brick Fanatics recorded a $239.99 US launch price (2022) Console, joystick, cartridges for Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede, three game-inspired scenes and a hidden 1980s gaming-room scene Movable controls, cartridges and display scenes; LEGO describes the replica as non-functional Price and stock depend on the retailer and the condition of the individual set

The figures above are not interchangeable “current prices.” A launch price, a dated LEGO catalog listing and a live resale offer describe different moments in a product’s life. Check the seller, box and instruction condition before treating any listing as a bargain.

Why the LEGO NES is the richer display project

A console, controller, cartridge and television in one build

The NES set’s appeal is its complete scene rather than the console alone. You assemble the console, a controller and a Game Pak, then build an interactive television styled after an 1980s set. LEGO’s 2020 product description calls it a “wonderfully detailed LEGO® brick Nintendo Entertainment System™ (71374)” with an “interactive, 1980s-style television displaying the classic Super Mario Bros.™ game.” That combination gives the finished model a stronger visual story than a lone console on a shelf.

The crank-driven Super Mario Bros. scene

A hand-operated mechanism moves the television’s scrolling scene when you turn the crank. It is a tactile novelty: visitors can see the scene change, and you can demonstrate the mechanism without batteries or an app. The motion is also the set’s most delicate feature. Keep the television level, turn the crank gently and avoid forcing it if a brick has shifted. The mechanism does not generate a video signal and cannot run an actual game.

Where the NES earns its price

  • The television adds a second substantial build and gives the console a recognizable setting.
  • The moving scene creates an interaction that static models lack.
  • For someone with strong memories of the NES and Super Mario Bros., the collection of small accessories can feel like a compact time capsule.

Where the NES can disappoint

  • It occupies more shelf depth than a console-only model because the television must sit beside or behind the console.
  • The set is retired on LEGO’s US product page, so a sealed example may cost more than the 2020 list price and an opened example may be missing parts.
  • Buyers expecting a working console will find only a mechanical display model.

What makes the Atari 2600 10306 different

A focused console display with interchangeable memories

The Atari set emphasizes the hardware and its game library. Its joystick and cartridge builds can be displayed with the console, while three small scenes evoke Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede. A hidden 1980s gaming-room scene adds a private detail that is revealed by opening part of the model.

Non-functional by design

LEGO describes 10306 as a non-functional replica. The joystick does not control a game, and the cartridges do not contain software. The interest is in arranging the objects and recognizing the references, not in simulating an electrical console. This makes the Atari a straightforward choice for a shelf where you want the console, controls and game references to read clearly at a glance.

Price context and value

The cited LEGO catalog listed $299.99 in 2023, while Brick Fanatics recorded a $239.99 US launch price in 2022. Those numbers show why date and source must accompany any price comparison: a launch promotion, a later catalog listing and a current second-hand offer can differ substantially. Compare complete-set condition and included accessories, not just the headline number.

NES versus Atari: a decision framework

Choose by the memories you want on the shelf

Pick the NES if the original Nintendo hardware, Super Mario Bros. and the television-era presentation are the memories you want to revisit. Pick the Atari if cartridges, a joystick and the earlier arcade-inspired game references are more meaningful. Nostalgia is not a minor tie-breaker here; it is the central reason these models command collector-level prices.

Choose by the kind of building project you prefer

The NES spreads its complexity across a console and a television with a moving mechanism. Atari concentrates the build around one console, its accessories and three compact scenes. Both exceed 2,500 pieces, so neither is a quick evening project, but their work is distributed differently. If you enjoy building and demonstrating a mechanism, the NES provides more to operate. If you prefer arranging several small vignettes around a central object, Atari’s format may be more satisfying.

Choose by available display space

Measure the shelf before ordering. Leave room to reach the NES crank and to lift or open any section you want to demonstrate. For Atari, reserve space for the console, joystick, cartridges and scenes so they do not become a crowded row of loose accessories. A model that has to be packed away because the shelf is too small loses much of its practical value.

Choose by availability risk

LEGO’s retired label for 71374 means you may be buying through a reseller rather than from LEGO. Resale prices can include a premium, and used sets require a parts and instruction check. Atari’s price is likewise retailer-dependent; the catalog and launch figures are historical reference points, not a promise of what a listing costs today.

How long will either set take to build?

No authoritative source located for these sets publishes a standardized build-hour figure. It would be misleading to convert 2,646 or 2,532 pieces directly into a promised number of hours: two builders can spend very different amounts of time on the same bag sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Factors that change elapsed time

  • Sorting method: Separating plates, tiles, technic elements and small decorative parts before each bag can reduce searching, while building directly from an unsorted pile usually takes longer.
  • Experience: A builder familiar with LEGO mechanisms may recognize patterns quickly; a first large set may require more pauses to check orientation.
  • Breaks and fatigue: Long sessions can increase mistakes and rework. Short sessions may produce fewer errors even though the calendar time is longer.
  • Display decisions: Choosing how to stage Atari’s scenes or where to place the NES television adds time beyond following the structural steps.

A practical way to plan the project

  1. Clear a stable table larger than the section you are currently building, with a tray or bowls for small parts.
  2. Photograph the sealed box and bags before opening if you are concerned about resale or proving completeness.
  3. Build one numbered bag group at a time and keep unused bags sealed; this narrows the search area and makes a pause easy.
  4. After each major section, test only the movement the instructions call for. For the NES, turn the crank gently; for Atari, confirm that the intended parts move or fit without forcing them.
  5. Reserve a final session for dusting, arranging accessories and selecting a shelf position rather than assuming the model is “finished” when the last structural brick is placed.

Use the piece count as a rough indication of commitment, not as a stopwatch. A seller or reviewer who promises an exact completion time is giving a personal estimate, not an official specification for these sets.

Are they actually playable?

No. The NES’s television scene moves through a hand-operated brick mechanism, but the model has no electronics, screen, cartridge reader or game software. Atari 2600 10306 is explicitly a non-functional replica; its joystick and cartridges are display elements. You would need original or modern replacement hardware separately to play the games.

The mechanical distinction affects care. Do not connect power, insert real cartridges or modify the models as though they were functioning consoles. Keep moving parts free of grit, stop when a mechanism binds and support larger sections from underneath when relocating them.

Buying checklist for a fair deal

  1. Identify the exact set number: confirm 71374 for the NES or 10306 for Atari, rather than relying on a listing title that may omit the number.
  2. Separate historical prices from today’s offer: treat the NES $269.99 US LEGO listing, Atari’s $299.99 2023 catalog figure and the $239.99 2022 US launch record as dated references.
  3. Check retirement and stock status: LEGO marks the NES retired, so verify whether the seller is offering new, opened or used stock.
  4. Verify completeness: ask about the instruction books, original box, all cartridges, the NES controller and Game Pak, and the small pieces used in the scenes.
  5. Inspect the mechanism: for a used NES, ask whether the television crank turns smoothly; for Atari, check that the joystick, cartridge shells and scene sections are present and undamaged.
  6. Budget for display: include a sturdy, dust-resistant shelf and enough clearance to demonstrate moving features.

Search using the full set name and number, then compare several sellers. Do not assume an online listing’s price, seller condition or any promotional relationship is fixed.

Who should buy each set—and who should skip both

The NES is a good fit if you:

  • Want the most elaborate presentation and a mechanism visitors can operate.
  • Have strong NES or Super Mario Bros. memories.
  • Can verify a complete set at a price you accept despite retirement-related premiums.
  • Have room for a console-and-television display.

The Atari is a good fit if you:

  • Prefer the Atari 2600’s joystick, cartridges and early game references.
  • Want three compact game-inspired scenes rather than a moving television.
  • Find a complete example whose price and condition make sense against the dated launch and catalog figures.

Skip both if you:

  • Need a playable console or working cartridge system.
  • Dislike long, detail-heavy builds and have no interest in displaying the result.
  • Cannot provide a stable shelf or do not want to manage dust, moving parts and fragile accessories.

What the announced LEGO PlayStation replica changes

PlayStation Blog announced on September 3, 2026 that LEGO and PlayStation were preparing a replica of the original PlayStation console and controller. The announcement describes functional Power and Open buttons, a controller that plugs into the console, removable game dioramas and regional RRPs of $179.99, €159.99, £139.99 and ¥27,980.

That is a future option, not a confirmed alternative you can automatically substitute for the NES or Atari today. Release timing, retailer listings and actual availability still need to be confirmed. When it is released, compare its final contents and local street price with the older sets rather than treating the announced RRP as a guaranteed selling price.

Final verdict

Buy the LEGO NES 71374 when its television mechanism and Nintendo nostalgia justify the premium and you have space for the larger presentation. Buy Atari 2600 10306 when its cartridges, joystick and three scenes match your memories better or when its verified complete-set price is more attractive. Both are worthwhile as hands-on display projects; neither is worthwhile as a substitute for a functioning video-game console. Because no official build-hour standard exists, judge the time commitment by your own pace and willingness to build, display and maintain a large model.
