Ultimate if you want a Nintendo Switch game built for shared-screen or local-wireless play. Choose Brawlhalla if your group spans different platforms, you want a free-to-play starting point, or you need matches that can include up to eight players online. The practical differences are clearest in platform access, price model, player limits, and online requirements—not in claims about which game is more fun or competitive.

Which game fits your group?
Pick Ultimate for Switch-centered local play
Ultimate is the straightforward choice if you and your friends have access to a Nintendo Switch and expect to play together on one system or through local wireless. Nintendo lists one to eight players on a single system, two to eight over local wireless, and two to four online. Those figures describe distinct modes, so the maximum for one setup should not be confused with the online limit.
Pick Brawlhalla for mixed-platform groups
Brawlhalla is the easier fit when friends use different hardware. Its official site lists PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS, and Android, and advertises full cross-play across those platforms. It also advertises up to eight players locally or online, making it a documented option for larger groups that want to play remotely.
How do the cost and online requirements compare?
Brawlhalla is free to start
The official Brawlhalla site describes the game as free to play. That makes it possible to try without first buying the game, but it should not be read as a promise that every optional item or feature has no cost.

Ultimate is a paid game, and online play needs membership
Nintendo lists Ultimate as a paid game and provides an official purchase page; check that page for current price and availability. For online play, Nintendo says an active Nintendo Account with a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for the specified multiplayer feature. See Nintendo Support’s multiplayer guidance for the membership requirement. This is an additional consideration beyond the game purchase when you plan to play online.
What do you need for local multiplayer?
For Ultimate, Nintendo mentions GameCube controllers as an option for local play and notes that additional accessories may be required and sold separately. A GameCube-style controller is optional; do not assume every player needs one. If you plan to use a particular controller, check its compatibility and any adapter requirements before buying it.
Brawlhalla’s official site advertises local matches for up to eight players. The cited page does not give a detailed controller or accessory setup guide, so check the game’s current platform-specific instructions for your hardware.

The official product information supports a practical recommendation based on hardware, price model, group size, and cross-play. Brawlhalla’s site also advertises “50+ Playable Legends,” but the cited page does not provide a dated exact roster count, and Nintendo’s product page does not give a current exact total for Ultimate. Those figures do not establish which game has the larger roster.

The listed specifications also do not establish which game has better controls, netcode, competitive balance, depth, onboarding, or a more active community. Those are separate questions of experience and evidence; choose based on your group’s platform and play setup first, then consider trying each game if those qualities are decisive for you.
