Yes. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks are canonically connected. Nintendo places them in the same adult-timeline sequence: Phantom Hourglass follows The Wind Waker, the search for new land leads to the establishment of a new Hyrule Kingdom, and Spirit Tracks takes place later in that kingdom. The connection is historical and generational rather than a scene-by-scene continuation of one rescue mission.
The official Zelda timeline connection
Nintendo’s official Zelda history gives the relationship a clear order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The Wind Waker
- Phantom Hourglass
- The establishment of a new Hyrule Kingdom
- Spirit Tracks
That sequence answers the central question: Spirit Tracks is set after Phantom Hourglass in the same continuity. It is not a separate universe, a remake of the earlier story, or merely a game that reuses similar ideas.
Nintendo’s product description for Phantom Hourglass explicitly calls it a continuation of The Wind Waker: “The epic story of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker continues as Link finds himself lost and alone in unknown seas in a new adventure.” The same description says that many months have passed since The Wind Waker and that Link, Tetra, and Tetra’s pirate crew have sailed in search of new lands.

What happens in Phantom Hourglass?
A continuation of The Wind Waker’s voyage
Phantom Hourglass begins after the events of The Wind Waker, when Link and Tetra are still traveling by sea. The opening situation is therefore not a new incarnation of the characters in an unrelated world. It is the next chapter of that particular Link and Tetra’s journey.
Nintendo’s manual synopsis identifies Tetra as Princess Zelda. During the voyage, she boards a mysterious ghost ship and disappears. Link starts a rescue mission, accompanied by the fairy Ciela, and must investigate unfamiliar waters connected to the Realm of the Ocean King.
The immediate story question is whether Link can find Tetra and deal with the danger represented by the ghost ship. The game’s ocean routes, islands, dungeons, and touch-screen controls all serve that rescue-and-exploration structure.
Why the voyage matters to the later game
The search is also the beginning of a larger historical change. Link, Tetra, and the pirates are looking for a place where a new society can be established rather than simply returning to the old Hyrule seen in earlier games. Nintendo’s chronology treats the establishment of New Hyrule as the consequence of this post-Wind Waker era.
Phantom Hourglass is therefore important to the timeline even beyond its own villain and rescue plot: it belongs to the voyage that precedes New Hyrule.

New Hyrule is the bridge between the games
What “New Hyrule” means
New Hyrule is a newly established kingdom founded after the seafaring period associated with The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass. It is not simply the old Hyrule with a new name on the map. Nintendo’s official history deliberately lists the kingdom’s establishment as its own step before Spirit Tracks.
That distinction explains why the second DS game can have familiar historical roots while presenting a very different landscape. Phantom Hourglass is dominated by open water and island travel; Spirit Tracks takes place after a settled kingdom has developed a rail network across its territory.
What happened to Tetra?
Tetra’s role is central to the transition. In Phantom Hourglass, she is the Zelda identified in the manual and the person Link is trying to rescue after the ghost-ship incident. Her expedition with Link and the pirates is part of the search for new lands that precedes New Hyrule.
Spirit Tracks does not resume that rescue at the exact moment the earlier game ends. Instead, it presents a later era in the kingdom that grew out of that expedition. The playable cast and their immediate circumstances belong to a subsequent generation, so the connection is historical succession rather than uninterrupted real-time action.
How long is the gap?
Nintendo’s retrieved first-party pages do not give a precise number of years between the two games. It is accurate to call Spirit Tracks a later generation or later era, but an exact in-world year count should not be assigned without another authoritative source.

A new crisis in an established kingdom
Nintendo’s product description summarizes the premise this way: “All aboard for adventure as Link sets off on a quest to restore the spirit tracks and keep an ancient demon locked away.” The central task is maintenance and restoration of the kingdom’s supernatural rail system, together with containment of an ancient threat.

This objective is fundamentally different from Phantom Hourglass’s ghost-ship rescue. The later game’s conflict concerns the stability of New Hyrule and the seals that restrain its demon, not the continuation of Tetra’s disappearance at sea.
Why the train does not contradict the earlier boat
The boat and the train represent different stages of the same broad history. In the earlier game, the characters are searching across unknown seas for a place to begin again. In the later game, that search has produced a kingdom with mapped territory, established routes, and functioning infrastructure. The change in transportation reflects the change in setting.
Both games were designed for Nintendo DS touch controls, but their travel systems create different rhythms: charting ocean routes and sailing between islands in Phantom Hourglass versus planning train movement and repairing the track network in Spirit Tracks.

Are they direct sequels?
The answer depends on what “direct sequel” means.
Yes, in the timeline
They are direct chronological successors within the same branch of Zelda history. Nintendo’s official timeline places Phantom Hourglass before New Hyrule and Spirit Tracks after it. That is stronger evidence than visual similarities or shared design ideas: it establishes a canonical historical relationship.
No, not as one uninterrupted plot
Spirit Tracks is not the next chapter of the same moment-to-moment rescue operation. Its premise, setting, threat, and generation of characters are different. Expect a later adventure built on the consequences of the earlier voyage, not a conventional “part two” that begins where Link last stood in Phantom Hourglass.

No. Spirit Tracks can be played as its own Zelda adventure because its immediate conflict is explained within that game. You do not need to know every event in the ghost-ship story to understand the spirit tracks, the ancient demon, or the later kingdom’s situation.
Playing in order is still worthwhile if you want the clearest view of the continuity:
- Play The Wind Waker to see the voyage and characters that lead into the DS era.
- Play Phantom Hourglass to follow Link and Tetra’s search for new lands and the rescue mission involving the ghost ship.
- Play Spirit Tracks to visit the later New Hyrule and see how the series shifts from ocean exploration to rail travel.
If you own only one DS title, choose based on the setting you prefer. The first emphasizes sailing, islands, and maritime discovery; the second emphasizes trains, a developed kingdom, and restoring a protective network.

The connection is not limited to the timeline chart. Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview discusses the team’s progression “from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass into making The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks.” The developers also describe starting with The Wind Waker as a foundation and carrying forward the boat-play concept while developing the later project.

Common misconceptions
“They are unrelated because one uses a train.”
The different transportation systems are precisely what show the historical progression. The boat belongs to the search for new land; the train belongs to the kingdom established afterward.
“Spirit Tracks is just another version of Phantom Hourglass.”
They share Nintendo DS touch controls and a connected history, but their objectives and environments differ. One centers on Tetra’s disappearance and ocean exploration; the other centers on restoring spirit tracks and containing an ancient demon.
“The games must be separated by a specific number of years.”
No precise in-world interval is stated in the first-party material summarized here. Use “later generation” or “later era” rather than assigning an unsupported figure.

“You must finish Phantom Hourglass to understand Spirit Tracks.”
The games reward chronological play, but Spirit Tracks has a distinct premise and can be understood on its own. The earlier game adds context for how New Hyrule came to exist; it is not a prerequisite manual for the later adventure.
The bottom line on the Zelda DS connection
Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks share an official continuity. Phantom Hourglass follows The Wind Waker and depicts the voyage connected to the search for new lands. After New Hyrule is established, Spirit Tracks follows in a later generation with a new Link-era adventure involving railways and an ancient demon. Play them in release or timeline order for the fullest context, but treat Spirit Tracks as a later historical sequel rather than an uninterrupted continuation of the ghost-ship rescue.
