Is Artweaver Free a painting program, an image editor, or both?

Natural-media brushes
Free includes realistic and customizable brushes. You can vary brush behavior and use the program’s predefined media to get effects associated with conventional painting tools. A pressure-sensitive pen tablet is supported, so stroke size or opacity can respond to pen pressure when the tablet driver and brush settings are configured correctly.
Everyday image editing
Standard tools include gradient, crop, fill, and selections. Effect filters provide additional processing, and editable text layers let you add type without flattening it immediately into the painted pixels. History and recorded work
History undo and redo let you step back from mistakes. Artweaver Free also lists event saving and playback, a feature for recording editing events and replaying them later. That can be useful when you want to repeat a sequence of operations or study how a document was built, although it should not be confused with a frame-based animation system.
Supported file formats
Free works with Artweaver’s AWD format and common bitmap formats: BMP, GIF, JPEG, PCX, TGA, TIFF, PNG, WEBP, and PSD. Choose a format based on what you need after closing the program: retain an Artweaver-native working file while you are still editing, or export to a broadly supported bitmap when another application or a web service must open the result. Keeping a separate working copy before exporting prevents a flattened delivery file from replacing your editable source.
What are Artweaver 8’s Windows system requirements?
The current requirements published for Artweaver 8 apply to the 64-bit Windows build. A computer that falls below these specifications may not install or may provide an unreliable experience, especially with large canvases, multiple layers, or filter-heavy documents.

The 250 MB figure covers the stated disk-space requirement, not the working memory a large document can consume while you paint. If you regularly use high-resolution canvases, many layers, or several filters, the recommended 16 GB of RAM gives Windows and Artweaver more room to work than the 6 GB minimum.

Do you need a drawing tablet for Artweaver Free?
No. You can use a mouse or trackpad, but a pressure-sensitive Windows pen tablet is the practical accessory for painting. Besware recommends a pen tablet, and the Free-versus-Plus comparison lists basic pen-tablet support with pen pressure in Free. The documentation does not endorse a particular manufacturer or model.
Install the tablet’s current Windows driver before launching Artweaver, then make a few test strokes in a blank document. If pressure has no visible effect, check that Windows recognizes the pen, that the driver is running, and that the selected brush has a pressure-responsive setting. Testing with a simple brush first helps distinguish a driver problem from a brush-configuration problem.
How do you install and set up Artweaver Free?
- Confirm compatibility. Verify Windows 10 64-bit version 21H2 or later, a 64-bit multicore processor at 2 GHz or faster, DirectX 11 graphics, at least 6 GB of RAM, a 1280×720 display, and 250 MB of available storage.
- Get the Windows installer. Use the official Artweaver download provided by Besware and select the Free edition. Keep the installer from the same release family as the version you intend to run.
- Install the application. Run the installer, accept the license terms only after reading the usage restrictions, and choose the requested installation location. Leave enough free space for documents and temporary working data beyond the program’s 250 MB requirement.
- Connect your tablet. If you paint with a pen, install its Windows driver and connect the tablet before testing pressure inside Artweaver.
- Create a test document. Open a new canvas, make strokes with a mouse and pen if available, try a layer with transparency, and test undo and redo. This confirms that input, display, and history behave as expected before you begin a substantial piece.
- Save a working file. Save the editable project in AWD while you work, then export a copy to the format required for sharing. Keep the original working file separate from exported JPEG, PNG, or other delivery copies.
What is the difference between Artweaver Free and Plus?
Plus is the paid edition and adds features aimed at more demanding painting, compositing, and production workflows. The following comparison uses the limits and feature differences stated by Besware; it does not imply that every project needs Plus.

For a small illustration, study, or ordinary bitmap edit, Free’s 250-pixel brush ceiling and 9,999-pixel document ceiling may be adequate. A very large print, broad textured brush, complex Photoshop interchange, mirror-symmetry workflow, or 16-bit-per-channel project points toward Plus instead. Plus is described as perpetual and time-unlimited, with use on all computers owned by the licensee, subject to its license terms.

Can you use Artweaver Free commercially?
Do not use the Free edition for paid commissions, client work, monetized content, or another profit-making or non-trivial purpose unless the current license explicitly permits it. Besware’s licensing page says, “You have the right to use the free version of the software without limitations and free of charge.” It immediately narrows that permission with the statement, “Merely usage of the free version for profit or any other non-trivial purpose is explicit not allowed!”
In the same license terms, Besware says a registered full version is required for profit or other non-trivial use and describes a 14-day refund period. If your work will earn money or be delivered to a client, read the current license and obtain the required full version before starting the project; do not assume that freeware status grants commercial rights.
How should you choose a format when saving?
Use AWD for an Artweaver-native working document when you expect to revisit the piece. Export a copy in a common format when the recipient needs a broadly compatible image. PNG is generally suited to lossless artwork and transparency, JPEG to smaller photographic-style exports where lossy compression is acceptable, and TIFF or PSD when a downstream graphics workflow specifically requests them. Artweaver Free lists all of these among its supported formats except that PSD’s deeper layer-group and PSB capabilities are Plus-only.
Save before applying a risky filter or making a major transformation, and retain sequential working copies if a document is important. That simple habit gives you a recovery point if a filter, clipboard operation, or third-party tablet driver behaves unexpectedly.
How do you update to Artweaver 8.1.7?
The 8.1.7 release was announced on 18 October 2026. In Artweaver, open Help → Check for Updates to use the built-in online updater. The release notes specifically mention fixes for the Magic Wand, document and Layers palette menus, dragged-palette height, black filter previews, clipboard text with unknown characters, and assorted random errors, so updating is especially sensible if you encounter one of those symptoms.

Save and close important documents before updating. After the update, reopen a copy of a project and test the tools you rely on rather than assuming that an installation alone confirms that your tablet, custom brushes, and file associations are working.

The installer rejects the computer
Check the Windows edition and architecture first. Artweaver 8 requires 64-bit Windows 10 version 21H2 or later; a 32-bit installation or an older Windows release is outside the stated requirement. Confirm the processor, DirectX 11-capable GPU, display resolution, RAM, and free space before trying the installer again.
Brush strokes feel identical with a pen and mouse
Verify the tablet driver in Windows, reconnect the tablet, and restart Artweaver after the driver is installed. Test a pressure-responsive brush in a new document and inspect the brush’s pressure settings. If pressure still fails, isolate the issue by checking the tablet in another Windows drawing application; that helps determine whether the problem is the driver or Artweaver’s brush configuration.
A filter preview is black or a menu behaves oddly
Install the current 8.1.7 maintenance release, which lists black filter previews and several menu-related fixes. If the issue remains, save the document, reproduce the problem in a small test file, and avoid overwriting your only working copy while troubleshooting.
A PSD does not preserve everything
Free supports PSD as a common format, but extended PSD layer-group handling and PSB support are listed as Plus-only. If a file depends on those structures, ask the sender for a flattened export or use the edition that supports the required Photoshop features. Keep an AWD source when the document will continue to be edited in Artweaver.

A large canvas becomes difficult to work with
Stay within Free’s 9,999×9,999-pixel document limit and remember that the stated 6 GB RAM minimum is not a performance guarantee for a very large, layered file. Close other memory-heavy applications, reduce unnecessary layers or document dimensions, and save incremental copies. Projects that routinely need larger canvases, 16-bit channels, or broader brush sizes are candidates for Plus rather than workarounds around the Free limits.
Who is Artweaver Free best suited to?
Free is a sensible starting point for a Windows user who wants natural-media brushes, layers, transparency, basic selection and transformation work, filters, text layers, and tablet pressure without paying for an entry-level painting application. It also suits learners who need a straightforward raster canvas and artists whose documents stay below the stated brush and canvas ceilings.
It is less suitable when your work depends on advanced Photoshop document structures, PSB files, mirror painting, advanced brush and filter families, real-time filter previews, 16-bit-per-channel processing, or the Plus size limits. It is also the wrong choice for a paid project unless you move to the licensed full version required by Besware’s terms.

Can I open an Artweaver file on a different operating system?
The listed application requirements are for Windows 10 64-bit or later, and the native AWD format is associated with Artweaver. For handoff to someone without Artweaver, export a copy in a common bitmap format such as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or PSD rather than assuming an AWD file will open elsewhere.
Does Artweaver Free support 16-bit color documents?
