Which program is actually failing?
Before changing files, identify the program named in the dialog and record where it came from. The same DLL name can appear in a game, an emulator, a Microsoft Store app, a graphics or audio utility, or a developer tool, but each may require a different build.
Record the error details
- Write down the executable or app name shown in the message.
- Note whether it was installed from the Microsoft Store, a game launcher, a publisher’s installer, or another source.

3. Reset the application when repair does not help
Return to the same Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [program] > Advanced options page and choose Reset if it is offered. Reset is more disruptive than Repair: it can remove the app’s local settings, cached content, sign-in state, or other data. Check the publisher’s instructions for saved games, profiles, mods, and exportable settings before confirming.

For a Microsoft Store or other packaged application, use its Repair or Reset controls and follow the Store-app troubleshooting prompts. Packaged programs can fail when a framework dependency such as VCLibs is absent, so a reset may help only when the package and its dependencies are otherwise available.
4. Uninstall and reinstall from the original source
If Repair and Reset fail, uninstall the affected application and install it again from the publisher’s current installer or the original store. Reinstallation is the normal way to restore an application-specific DLL together with its matching manifest, configuration files, and dependent components.
- Back up settings, save files, profiles, license information, and custom add-ons that the application stores outside the cloud.

When to repair or install Visual C++ Redistributable
If the application explicitly names Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, repair the existing matching package or install the official Microsoft package required by that application. Microsoft explains that an application can fail when Windows cannot find one of the Redistributable DLLs it requires. Keep the package associated with the application’s architecture and release family; do not remove every Visual C++ entry as a blanket measure.
When VCLibs or another framework matters
MSIX and Microsoft Store applications may declare framework dependencies such as VCLibs. If the Store or the application reports that a framework is missing, repair the package through the Store or follow the publisher’s documented dependency installation.
