Assassin’s Creed Shadows Title Update 1.1.1 arrived in September 2025 with the Claws of Awaji expansion, a free Bo quest, a level-cap increase to 100, new Hideout progression, and the Animus Hub project Sanctuary. The free update and paid expansion are separate: all base-game owners can play the introductory Bo quest, while Awaji and some Bo rewards require the expansion. Ubisoft’s notes describe Sanctuary as offering Ezio-themed gear; they do not establish that every legacy cosmetic is free.
When Update 1.1.1 released—and what it included
Ubisoft announced Title Update 1.1.1 on September 10, 2025, with release scheduled for September 11. It was not the game’s final or latest update: Ubisoft announced a final major update in June 2026. Ubisoft’s 1.1.1 release notes cover the expansion, new progression systems, the free quest, and gameplay and quest fixes.
- Claws of Awaji: A new island story featuring Naoe and Yasuke, the Sanzoku Ippa faction, Fujibayashi Tsuyu, traps and ambushes, and new gear, skills, and abilities. Ubisoft estimated more than 10 hours of additional content; that is the publisher’s estimate, not independently measured playtime.
- Free story quest: “Go With The Bo” gives Naoe a Bo weapon.
- Progression: The level cap rose to 100, and Mythic and Artifact gear tiers became available through Forge progression.
- Hideout upgrades: Each unique building gained two upgrade levels, for 20 new enhancements in total, and the Hideout gained three levels.
- World navigation: Players can advance the time of day, improve Scout map discovery, and reveal more of a province map through progression.
- Animus Hub: The Sanctuary project offers Ezio-themed gear, a kusarigama, and other rewards through project progression.
- PC cutscenes: The 30-FPS cutscene cap was removed on PC. Ubisoft did not describe this change as applying to consoles.
What is free, and what requires Claws of Awaji?
The base-game quest and the expansion are distinct. The “Go With The Bo” quest is available to all owners of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, while the Awaji island story and expansion rewards require Claws of Awaji. Ubisoft’s access guide listed the expansion at $/€25 for players who had not preordered when it launched on September 16, 2025; that is a historical launch price, not a current price quote. The free quest provides a Bo weapon, but it does not make every Bo reward free. Ubisoft distinguishes the introductory quest from procedural Bo drops across Japan and Legendary Bo staves, which are tied to the expansion. The expansion also brings its new region, story, gear, skills, and abilities. Ubisoft’s later Claws of Awaji launch recap discusses additional expansion details.

How to start Claws of Awaji
Awaji is gated by story progress, so owning the add-on alone is not enough to begin the quest. Ubisoft’s guide says to complete the main story arcs for both Naoe and Yasuke and the “Out of the Shadows” quest, including its preceding personal and League quest requirements.
- Complete the main story arcs for Naoe and Yasuke.
- Complete “Out of the Shadows” and its required preceding personal and League quests.
- At the Hideout in Settsu, meet Hanzo’s contact and begin “News from Hattori Hanzo.”
What the update changed for progression
Level cap and gear
The cap increased to 100. To unlock Mythic and Artifact quality, upgrade the Forge to level 6. The patch notes also describe additional upgrade levels and different advancement paths for Epic and Legendary gear as it reaches the new tiers.

Hideout, time of day, and Scouts
- Hideout: Each unique building gained two upgrade levels. Across the buildings, that is 20 new enhancements; the Hideout itself gained three levels.
- Advance time: Upgrade the Nando to level 2. In a safe location, meditate to advance to the next 6 o’clock—AM or PM.
- Scout discoveries: At Study level 4, Scouts can reveal Viewpoints and Safehouses. At Kakurega level 4, uncover every Viewpoint in a province to reveal its full map.
Are the Ezio-themed cosmetics free?
The release notes say the Animus Hub’s Sanctuary project offers “Ezio themed gear, kusarigama, and much more” through project progression and rewards. That supports saying Sanctuary has Ezio-themed rewards; it does not establish that every legacy cosmetic is free or that Sanctuary is a single, complete cosmetic bundle. Ubisoft’s September 2025 expansion recap separately mentions Ezio’s outfit and the Ezio-inspired Rooftop Cat at the Hideout, so those details should not be treated as the release notes’ full description of Sanctuary.
The in-game shop is a separate route for cosmetics and other items, including weapons, mounts, Hideout items, and Helix Credits. Its inventory should not be confused with the free quest or Sanctuary rewards. Ubisoft describes the shop on its Assassin’s Creed Shadows cosmetics page.
