There is no authoritative, universal minimum specification for an Assetto Corsa dedicated server. The commonly quoted memory figures belong to the player game client, not the server process. Your real requirements depend on how many players and server instances you run, the cars and tracks loaded, custom content, the host computer’s other work, and its network connection.
This guide separates documented facts from unknowns, explains self-hosting and managed hosting, and gives a practical way to choose and verify a setup without turning one provider’s plan into a supposed hardware standard.

The short answer: server sizing is workload-specific
Assetto Corsa’s public system-requirement information describes the game installed on a player’s computer. It does not publish a tested CPU, RAM, or upload-bandwidth threshold for a dedicated server by player count or mod load. Consequently, there is no defensible answer such as one fixed amount of RAM for every server.
A small private session and several busy public instances are different workloads. A machine that runs only the server has a different budget from a desktop that is simultaneously running the game, voice chat, recording software, or other services. Custom cars, tracks, weather extensions, and server plugins can also change startup time, storage use, and runtime behavior. Treat any number advertised by a hosting company as the specification of that company’s plan, not as an official Assetto Corsa minimum.

Client requirements are not dedicated-server requirements
Steam lists 2 GB of RAM as the minimum and 6 GB as the recommended memory for the Assetto Corsa game client (Steam, n.d.). Those figures describe the application a player launches to render a simulation, not a headless server that coordinates sessions. Reusing them as server requirements can leave out operating-system memory, server instances, content files, and other processes.
| Figure or claim | What it actually describes | How to use it when planning a server |
|---|---|---|
| 2 GB RAM minimum | Steam’s minimum requirement for the player client | Do not treat it as a dedicated-server baseline |
| 6 GB RAM recommended | Steam’s recommended requirement for the player client | It still does not establish server capacity or player count |
| Official server CPU, RAM, or upload limits by player count | Not published in the available documentation | Measure your intended workload or obtain a provider’s current allocation and test it |
AssettoServer is a separate custom server implementation rather than the default server implementation. Its documentation covers installation on both Windows and Linux. The existence of those installation paths tells you how to deploy it; it does not supply a universal hardware table.
What determines CPU and RAM demand?
Concurrent players
More connected clients generally mean more state to process and transmit. However, no reliable source establishes a conversion such as a particular number of cores per player. A provider’s slot limit may be a commercial policy, a resource safeguard, or both, so it cannot be converted into a general rule.

Running two or more races at once adds separate processes, configuration files, logs, and loaded content. Plan for the aggregate workload rather than multiplying a marketing figure without checking what is included in that figure.
Cars, tracks, and custom content
Mods and server-side extensions consume disk space and can affect startup and runtime behavior. The available evidence does not quantify memory or CPU increases for particular car packs, tracks, weather systems, or plugins. Keep additional headroom for the operating system and for content updates instead of assuming the base game’s client requirement covers them.
Other work on the host
If the computer also runs the graphical game, a web panel, backups, a database, recording, or voice services, those tasks compete with the server. A dedicated or otherwise quiet machine makes diagnosis easier because a stutter or crash is less likely to be caused by an unrelated process.

Upload capacity and connection quality
The server must send session data to every connected client. The reviewed sources do not publish an upload threshold by player count, tick rate, or content. Compare your measured upstream capacity with the traffic produced by your planned session and watch for saturation, packet loss, and latency spikes. A fast download line does not compensate for an insufficient or unstable upload path.
How much RAM should an Assetto Corsa server have?
No authoritative source in the available material gives a minimum or recommended RAM amount for a dedicated server. The correct question is how much memory remains after the operating system, server process or processes, loaded content, logs, and any co-hosted applications are accounted for.
Use a provider allocation as an example only. One hosted plan description specifies four slots, 1 vCPU, 2 GB of RAM, and 2 GB of asset storage. Those numbers describe that provider’s stated plan at the time it was documented; they are not a compatibility guarantee, a tested universal minimum, or proof that every four-player server will behave the same way. Verify that the plan still exists, what operating system overhead is included, and whether custom content counts against its storage limit.
For self-hosting, start with the machine you actually intend to use, launch the server with the full content set, and observe memory while the target number of clients joins. Leave room for normal operating-system activity and for a content update. If the process is terminated by the operating system, logs show allocation failures, or swapping begins during a race, memory is a constraint. If memory remains comfortably available while CPU or network metrics are stressed, adding RAM alone will not solve that bottleneck.
What CPU is needed?
The available documentation does not establish a required processor model, clock speed, core count, or per-player CPU threshold. AssettoServer and the default server implementation may schedule work differently, and plugins or multiple instances can alter the profile. A plan advertised with 1 vCPU therefore means only that the provider allocated one virtual CPU to that plan.
For a self-hosted machine, look for sustained CPU saturation, a busy single core, missed simulation deadlines, delayed joins, or server log warnings while a representative session is running. Record total utilization and per-core utilization: a low overall percentage can hide one fully loaded core. Do not infer that a newer processor is adequate solely from its model name; verify with the exact cars, track, weather, plugins, and player count you will use.

Network ports, firewall rules, and reachability
AssettoServer’s beginner guide lists TCP and UDP port 9600 and TCP port 8081 as its default port-forwarding values. Your server configuration is authoritative: if you change a port, forward and allow the changed value instead. The guide also notes that firewall exceptions may be necessary.
- Check the server configuration and write down the actual game and HTTP or management ports.
- Create router port-forwarding rules for the required protocol and port. The default example is TCP+UDP 9600 plus TCP 8081, not a guarantee that your configuration uses those values.
- Allow the same traffic through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Confirm that the router forwards to the machine’s current private IP address; reserve that address if your network supports DHCP reservations.
- Test from outside your home network. Testing only from the host or the same LAN can produce a false impression that internet access works.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound traffic. In that case, ordinary port forwarding may not be sufficient, and a managed host or another reachable network arrangement may be more practical. One option is Godlike.Host’s Assetto Corsa server hosting, which comes with free DDoS protection, a personal firewall, up to three free backups a day, SFTP/FTP access and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket; see the current plans for what each one includes. The documentation establishes the ports and firewall consideration, but it does not promise that every ISP or router will permit inbound connections.
Self-hosting on Windows or Linux
Windows
AssettoServer documents a Windows installation path. Obtain the server software from its current documentation, install the required files, create or edit the configuration for your track rotation and entry list, and run the server process. Apply the port and firewall steps above, then test a real connection. Keep the process, configuration, logs, and custom-content directories backed up so an update or edit can be reversed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLinux
AssettoServer also documents Linux installation. A community Linux guide describes using SteamCMD to obtain server files and editing server_cfg.ini and entry_list.ini. That is a community example rather than an official hardware specification, and the instructions are dated; compare every command and file location with the current AssettoServer documentation before using it. Run the server under a service account, restrict file permissions, and arrange a restart policy only after the basic configuration works.
Common self-hosting checks
- Use a stable local address so forwarding does not silently point at another device.
- Keep the server and custom content versions consistent with the clients you expect to join.
- Open only the ports required by the actual configuration.
- Monitor CPU per core, memory, disk space, upload usage, latency, and packet loss during a full session.
- Back up configuration files before changing entry lists, weather settings, or plugins.
Managed hosting versus running it yourself
A managed service runs the server process and underlying machine for you. Self-hosting gives you control over the operating system and files but makes you responsible for networking, updates, monitoring, and recovery. Neither approach has a universally superior performance result; the useful comparison is operational responsibility and the limits written into the current plan.
| Decision area | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Server process and operating system | You install, update, secure, and restart them | The provider maintains the host and usually supplies a control panel or support path |
| Router and firewall | Usually requires local firewall rules and, for internet play, router forwarding | Normally handled in the provider’s network; confirm any extra restrictions |
| Configuration and files | Direct control of server files, entry lists, plugins, and logs | Control depends on panel access, file access, and the provider’s supported content |
| Resources | Bound by your machine and connection; no published Assetto Corsa universal threshold | Bound by the plan’s stated slots, vCPU, RAM, storage, and policies |
| Custom-content storage | Uses your own disk capacity | Check the asset quota and whether backups or uploads count |
| Location, price, and terms | Your electricity, hardware, and internet costs | Varies by region, billing period, support, and current terms; verify before purchase |
The documented example of four slots, 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, and 2 GB asset storage belongs in the managed-host column as a plan description only. It does not prove that a self-hosted computer with the same figures will perform identically, because virtualization, storage speed, network location, and host overhead differ.

A practical sizing and validation procedure
- Define the workload. Write down the maximum simultaneous players, number of server instances, track and car packs, plugins, restart schedule, and whether the host will run anything else.
- Choose the deployment model. Select a computer and internet connection you control, or shortlist managed plans that state slot, CPU, RAM, storage, location, and content policies.
- Build the complete configuration. Do not benchmark an empty server if the production setup will load custom cars, tracks, weather, or plugins.
- Exercise the peak case. Have the intended number of clients join, load the heaviest combination you expect, and run long enough to expose leaks, thermal throttling, or network saturation.
- Measure the bottleneck. Check per-core CPU use, resident memory and swap, disk space, upstream traffic, latency, packet loss, join times, and server logs.
- Change one variable at a time. Remove a plugin, reduce concurrent instances, move another service, or change host capacity, then repeat the same test so the result is interpretable.
- Document the working state. Save the configuration, content versions, firewall rules, and observed peak metrics for the next update.
This process produces evidence for your workload without pretending that a single number applies to every Assetto Corsa server.

Players cannot see or join the server
Check that the configured port matches the router rule and firewall exception, that TCP and UDP are both enabled where required, and that forwarding targets the correct private IP. Test from an external connection and investigate carrier-grade NAT or inbound filtering if local tests succeed but internet tests fail.
The server becomes unresponsive during a busy race
Inspect per-core CPU usage and logs first, then memory and swap. A single saturated core, a plugin fault, or a second co-hosted process can be the cause even when total CPU usage looks moderate. Reproduce with the same content and player count before changing hardware.
New custom content fails to load
Confirm that the server has the complete files, adequate asset storage, matching configuration entries, and compatible client versions. Keep a known-good configuration so you can remove the new content and verify whether it introduced the failure.
Performance degrades after several restarts
Check free disk space, log growth, restart scripts, and whether old server processes remain running. Multiple orphaned instances can consume CPU and RAM while appearing as a configuration problem.

No reliable published table was identified for CPU, RAM, upload bandwidth, player count, mod load, or number of concurrent instances. There is also no named official quotation or laboratory benchmark that converts those variables into a buying threshold. It is more accurate to state that limitation than to repeat a convenient rule of thumb.
Use the documented client figures only to size a player’s gaming computer, use AssettoServer’s Windows and Linux documentation to choose an installation path, and use its port-forwarding guidance to make the configured service reachable. For hardware, rely on a representative load test or on a provider’s current, explicitly limited plan description.
