There is no official Unturned server specification that says you need a particular amount of RAM, a certain CPU, or a fixed player-to-hardware ratio. The official documentation supports dedicated servers on Windows and Linux, but leaves capacity dependent on player count, map, Workshop content, plugins, operating system and the way the server is used. Treat any number found on a hosting advertisement or forum as a workload-specific estimate, not an official requirement.
You can run a server yourself or rent one. Self-hosting gives you control but makes you responsible for updates, networking, backups and uptime. Renting removes much of that maintenance, but you must verify the provider’s actual resource allocation, Unturned support, Workshop compatibility, location and renewal terms.

What the official documentation actually requires
The clearest starting point is the official documentation rather than a generic game-server calculator. The Unturned hosting pages identify supported operating systems and installation methods, but they do not publish a minimum or recommended RAM figure, CPU core count, clock speed, benchmark, or player-count formula.

The advanced guide states: “Servers can be hosted on Windows and Linux operating systems. There is no support for hosting on macOS devices.” Read the current instructions at Using SteamCMD (Advanced Setup). The hosting guide is dated November 1, 2022, while the other cited documentation pages do not show a publication date; installation identifiers and access procedures can change, so check the live pages when you deploy.

Why a fixed RAM or CPU answer would be misleading
Two servers with the same nominal player limit can have very different workloads. A lightly used private server on a simple map may behave differently from a busy public server running a large Workshop collection, several plugins and frequent world activity. The official pages do not quantify those differences, so assigning a universal number would imply evidence that does not exist.
- Concurrent players: The maximum-player setting is a limit, not a performance guarantee. Real activity, not just the configured ceiling, affects load.
- Map and world activity: Map complexity and what players do in the world can change CPU and memory demand, but no official per-map estimates are published.
- Workshop and plugins: Add-ons are downloaded and loaded at startup. Their resource impact depends on the individual item and its behavior; the documentation supplies no aggregate allowance.
- Operating system and other processes: The server shares resources with the OS, monitoring tools, backups and anything else running on the machine.
- Uptime and save activity: Long-running instances accumulate logs and saves and need clean shutdowns. A machine that is adequate for a short test may be unsuitable for unattended uptime.
If you need a number for a specific community, use a transparent, repeatable test for the exact game version, OS, map, Workshop set, plugin set and player load you intend to run. Record memory consumption, CPU utilization, tick or simulation behavior and network symptoms over a representative session. Leave capacity for the operating system and other processes, but do not present an arbitrary percentage as an official Unturned rule.
Self-hosting or renting: which approach fits?
Both models can work. The important distinction is who owns the operational work and whether you can provide reliable public network access.

Official Unturned documentation does not compare providers or establish current prices. Treat a rented server as a category, not an endorsement, and verify the provider’s current Unturned support before paying.

Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Use the dedicated server application, not the files from a normal player installation. The official hosting instructions install and update it through Valve’s SteamCMD.

Prepare the machine
- Use Windows or Linux; hosting on macOS is not supported by the advanced setup documentation.
- Choose a stable machine that can remain online for the intended schedule.
- Reserve storage for the server files, save data, logs and any Workshop downloads.
- Decide whether the server is LAN-only or needs public internet access before configuring the network.
Install or update the server files
- Install SteamCMD from the official SteamCMD distribution for your operating system.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the SteamCMD directory.
- Log in anonymously with
login anonymous. - Install or update the Unturned server application with
app_update 1110390. The application ID identifies the Unturned server; it is not a hardware statistic. - Exit SteamCMD with
quitafter the command completes, or leave it available for later updates.
Running app_update 1110390 again updates the existing dedicated-server files. Keep a copy of your configuration and save data before major changes, and schedule updates when players are offline.
Launch on Windows or Linux
The advanced setup provides launch helpers: ServerHelper.bat on Windows and ServerHelper.sh on Linux. The examples distinguish an internet server from a LAN server, so select the helper and mode that match your access plan. Server data and configuration are kept under a directory named for the server’s ID, which makes separate instances and their saves easier to identify.

- Map: Select the world the server should load.
- Password: Protect a private or testing server when open access is not desired.
- Maximum players: Set the connection ceiling for that instance. This setting does not tell you what hardware is sufficient.
Store settings in the server’s ID directory as described by the setup guide. Keep the directory structure intact when moving the server or restoring a backup.
Workshop add-ons
Workshop content is configured in WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. List the add-ons required by your server there; the server retrieves and updates configured items during startup. A large or frequently changing collection can increase startup time and storage use, but the official documentation gives no RAM or CPU estimate for any particular item. Test the exact collection you plan to run and remove unused entries to simplify troubleshooting.

Use the documented shutdown command rather than killing the process or powering off the machine. Clean shutdowns allow the server to save and close files properly. The setup documentation emphasizes manual save/shutdown and does not describe an autosave feature, so include a deliberate save and shutdown procedure in maintenance and backup plans.

LAN play versus public internet hosting
A LAN server is not automatically visible from the public Multiplayer menu. For a household or local network, players can use Steam friends or a Server Code as described in the simple setup instructions.
Public access requires additional configuration. The official documentation says an internet server needs a Game Server Login Token and either Fake IP or port forwarding. It explicitly says both are not required and describes Fake IP as easier and adequate for most servers. The setup page states: “For an internet server, you must configure either Fake IP or Port Forwarding. Configuring both is not necessary.” Follow the full procedure at Setting up a Server.
Fake IP path
- Create and apply the required GSLT as described in the official setup documentation.
- Configure the server for Fake IP using the documented launch and configuration options.
- Start the server and test joining from a network outside the host’s LAN, not only from the same router.
Port-forwarding path
- Create the GSLT.
- Forward the ports specified by the current Unturned documentation from your router to the host computer’s local address.
- Allow the server application through the host firewall.
- Test from an external connection and confirm that the public address and port are reachable.
The hosting guide notes that port forwarding is needed when an internet-accessible server is hosted from a home network. Router interfaces vary, and carrier-grade NAT or an ISP policy can prevent inbound connections even when local settings look correct.
Running more than one Unturned server
Multiple instances change the installation path. The official advanced guide says running multiple servers from the same computer is not possible without SteamCMD and recommends SteamCMD for that setup. Give each instance its own ServerID directory, configuration, save data and launch parameters. Assign distinct network ports where required, and start each instance separately so one server’s Workshop files or saves are not accidentally used by another.
Before adding an instance, measure the first server under its normal workload. Because no official scaling formula exists, treat every additional instance as a new workload and observe the combined CPU, memory, disk and network behavior instead of multiplying a guessed requirement.
How to size a server responsibly without an official number
- Define the workload: Write down the expected active-player range, maximum-player setting, map, Workshop items, plugins, operating system and intended uptime.
- Build the exact configuration: Use the same server files and launch options you will use in production. Do not test a bare server and assume the result covers a modded one.
- Load-test gradually: Add players and normal gameplay activity in stages. Watch for rising memory use, sustained CPU saturation, delayed simulation, disconnects and long startup times.
- Observe over time: A short launch test can miss memory growth, log accumulation or save-related pauses. Monitor a representative session and, for a persistent server, several maintenance cycles.
- Keep operational headroom: Leave room for the OS, updates, backups and unexpected activity. The amount is a planning decision based on your measurements, not an official Unturned percentage.
- Set a recovery plan: Back up saves and configuration, document the launch command, and decide how you will roll back a Workshop item or update that causes instability.
Troubleshooting capacity and connectivity problems
The server starts but players cannot join from outside
- Confirm that a valid GSLT is configured.
- Use either Fake IP or port forwarding; configuring both is unnecessary according to the official instructions.
- For port forwarding, verify the host’s local address, router rule, firewall permission and the ports listed in the current documentation.
- Test from a genuinely external network. A local test can succeed even when the public route is blocked by NAT or an ISP.
The server is visible but becomes unstable under load
- Record active players, map, Workshop items and plugins at the time of the problem.
- Check CPU and memory trends rather than a single instantaneous reading.
- Temporarily reproduce the issue with Workshop items or plugins removed one at a time, keeping a written configuration so you can restore it.
- Lower the maximum-player setting while investigating; remember that it is a connection cap, not proof of capacity.
Workshop content is missing or startup is slow
- Check the item IDs and JSON syntax in
WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. - Allow the server to finish downloading or updating content before judging startup performance.
- Confirm that every client has the required content and that obsolete entries have been removed.
- Compare disk space and download behavior with the server’s logs.
Saves or settings appear lost
- Stop the server with the documented shutdown command so data can be written cleanly.
- Verify that you launched the intended ServerID directory rather than a second instance with a different save path.
- Restore the most recent known-good save and configuration backup if a change corrupted the active files.
Which source should you trust?
Use the official Server Hosting documentation for the dedicated-server workflow and the official SteamCMD advanced setup for Windows, Linux and multiple-instance details. The official server setup guide covers LAN/public access, GSLT, Fake IP, port forwarding and basic configuration. None of these pages supplies a universal RAM or CPU requirement, so a claim that presents one as official is overstating the available evidence.
