Can You Use Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 Controllers Like a PC Mouse? What Nintendo Confirms

Yes. Nintendo confirms that Joy-Con 2 controllers can work as mice on the Switch 2 HOME Menu and in software that supports mouse controls. They can be moved over a flat surface, one at a time or as a pair. A separate patent publication describes optical tracking based on changing reflected light, but patent drawings are design embodiments—not proof that every illustrated setup or detail is part of the finished product.

Can I use the Switch 2 Joy-Con as a mouse?

Yes, if you mean the Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 controllers. Nintendo says they work as mice on the Switch 2 HOME Menu and in software that supports mouse controls. That does not mean every game supports them: the software must implement mouse controls.

Nintendo’s instructions allow one or two Joy-Con 2 controllers to be used on a table or another similarly flat surface. Attach the Joy-Con 2 strap before using a controller as a mouse. Nintendo’s support guidance establishes the practical feature; a patent is not needed to show that the feature is available.

How do the Switch 2 Joy-Cons work like a PC mouse?

The patent’s optical-tracking idea

International patent publication WO2025027803A1 describes a mouse-operation sensor that detects reflected light from a surface. As the controller moves with one of its side surfaces against the surface, the reflected light changes, allowing the sensor to detect movement. Nintendo Life’s report reproduces the patent abstract’s description: “The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface.”

What the patent drawings show—and do not establish

Drawings reported from the publication illustrate a controller held sideways, with access to the analog stick and upper buttons. They depict one or two controllers used as mice, as well as a mixed setup with one controller used normally. These are embodiments shown in a patent, not a complete specification of shipping hardware. Nintendo’s support information, rather than the drawings, is the sound basis for explaining what users can do.

Nintendo’s US Virtual Patent Marking page lists Joy-Con 2 as protected by US Patent Nos. 10,543,423, 11,141,654, and 12,691,375. The listing does not say which patent or claims concern mouse operation, so those numbers should not be treated as a mouse-specific patent citation.

Which surfaces work, and what should you avoid?

Nintendo recommends a flat surface. Tracking may be unreliable on reflective surfaces such as glass, on some materials or fabrics, or when using the controller on a lap or other uneven surface. If mouse operation is interrupted, Nintendo advises moving to a flat surface and removing obstructions between the controllers and console.

  • Clean dust and dirt from the controller, strap, and surface.
  • Choose a flat surface without sharp edges or protrusions, and avoid surfaces that scratch easily.
  • Consider a mouse pad or mat to protect a surface that could be scratched. Nintendo presents this as protection, not as a requirement or a guaranteed tracking improvement.
  • Do not strike or press forcefully on the Joy-Con while moving it.
  • Be aware that rubbing a controller on some fabrics may cause its color to fade.

What control setups can games use?

Setup What it can do What to know
One Joy-Con 2 as a mouse Mouse input in the HOME Menu or compatible software The software must support mouse controls; use a flat surface and attach the strap.
Two Joy-Con 2 controllers as mice Games can use mouse-like movement from both hands Nintendo describes this arrangement for Drag x Drive, where the controllers move like mice to control the wheels.
One Joy-Con 2 as a mouse, one used normally A game can combine mouse aiming or pointing with conventional controller input Nintendo developer Kouichi Kawamoto described this arrangement for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond: the left controller moves the character while the right is used as a mouse to aim and shoot.

Nintendo has also cited mouse-control gameplay in Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV. These examples show how developers may use the input; they do not establish that every game offers the same control scheme.

Why did Nintendo add mouse controls?

Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta described mouse functionality as a way to use a pointer on a TV, offering some of the role touch input can play in handheld mode. He also noted that mouse input is not exactly the same as touch input. In Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview, Dohta said, “Speaking as a software developer, it’s great to have an option like this.” That is a design rationale, not a promise that mouse controls replace touch input in every game.

What the patent does not tell you

The patent helps explain a possible technical approach and shows illustrated use arrangements. It does not establish that every drawing detail is present in retail hardware, nor does it tell you which games support mouse input. Nintendo’s support instructions answer the practical compatibility and surface questions. Nintendo has not published standardized precision, latency, or comfort measurements in the sources cited here, so there is no supported basis for ranking Joy-Con 2 mouse performance against a PC mouse on those measures.
