ASUS Strix Halo Gaming Tablet Leak Was Real—But Does the ROG Flow Z13 Beat the PS5?

The ASUS Strix Halo tablet leak was real, but the ROG Flow Z13’s impressive 40-CU integrated GPU does not automatically make it faster than a PS5.

The ASUS Strix Halo gaming tablet leak was substantially accurate. ASUS later released the 2025 ROG Flow Z13, a Windows 2-in-1 built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Max platform. Its top configuration combines 16 Zen 5 CPU cores with Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units, and up to 128GB of shared LPDDR5X memory.

Those specifications make the Z13 one of the most ambitious gaming tablets ever made. They do not, however, prove that it universally outperforms a PlayStation 5. The more accurate conclusion is that ASUS compressed unusually powerful laptop-class hardware into a tablet form factor, with major trade-offs in price, power consumption, cooling, battery life, and memory design.

What the ASUS Strix Halo leak claimed

On August 2, 2024, HotHardware reported on an apparent ASUS internal cooling-development presentation that referenced a next-generation ROG Flow Z13. The presentation reportedly pointed to a transition from the previous model’s Intel processor and NVIDIA graphics to AMD’s then-unreleased Strix Halo platform.

According to that report, ASUS was investigating a tablet design with:

  • A target surface temperature below 50°C and improved acoustic behavior.

The report also suggested that ASUS might reveal the product around CES 2025. These details came from an apparent internal presentation, not an ASUS retail specification sheet, so they were evidence of product development rather than proof that every figure would reach the final device. The original report itself also cautioned that a higher graphics-unit count would not automatically translate into better real-world gaming performance than a PS5.

That distinction matters because the leak was later followed by a real product announcement—not because every rumor number became a guaranteed operating specification.

Strix Halo became Ryzen AI Max+

Strix Halo was AMD’s development codename. The shipping platform uses the retail Ryzen AI Max branding, with the top Flow Z13 configuration built around the Ryzen AI Max+ 395.

Memory interface 256-bit LPDDR5X
Maximum memory Up to 128GB

This is not the same as Strix Point, the more conventional Ryzen AI 300-series design. Strix Halo became the larger, more graphics-heavy Ryzen AI Max family, which is why it attracted comparisons with dedicated-GPU laptops and game consoles.

ASUS really did release the tablet

ASUS announced the 2025 ROG Flow Z13, model family GZ302, on February 18, 2025. It is best understood as a Windows gaming tablet and detachable-keyboard laptop hybrid rather than an iPad-style tablet.

Depending on configuration, the Z13 offers:

  • A 13.4-inch 16:10 touchscreen.
  • 2560×1600 resolution and a 180Hz refresh rate.
  • A claimed 3ms response time.
  • 100% DCI-P3 coverage and Pantone validation.
  • Stylus support.
  • AMD Ryzen AI Max 390 or Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processors.
  • Radeon 8050S or Radeon 8060S integrated graphics.
  • 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, depending on model.
  • A 70Wh battery.
  • A 200W ASUS power adapter.
  • USB4-capable USB-C ports, HDMI 2.1, USB-A, microSD, and 3.5mm audio.

ASUS lists the tablet at approximately 2.65 pounds without its keyboard and 3.51 pounds with the keyboard. That is highly portable for the hardware, but the 200W adapter and active cooling make it less convenient than the word “tablet” might suggest.

Not every ROG Flow Z13 has the same GPU

The 40-compute-unit Radeon 8060S belongs to the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 configurations. Lower versions use the Ryzen AI Max 390 and Radeon 8050S. Buyers should therefore identify the exact CPU and GPU before comparing prices or performance.

Configuration distinction What it means
Ryzen AI Max 390 Lower configuration, paired with Radeon 8050S graphics and up to 32GB memory in ASUS’s announced lineup.
Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Top configuration, paired with Radeon 8060S graphics and 64GB or 128GB unified memory options.

The memory is also easy to misunderstand. A 128GB model does not have 128GB of dedicated VRAM. The CPU, GPU, Windows, games, and applications share the same LPDDR5X pool. That flexibility can help large creative workloads, local AI models, and games with heavy texture requirements, but it does not turn the tablet into a discrete-GPU system.

Why the PS5 comparison is tempting

The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is extraordinary by integrated-graphics standards. It combines 16 Zen 5 cores with a 40-CU RDNA 3.5 GPU and a 256-bit LPDDR5X memory interface. AMD lists LPDDR5X-8000 support, while its Ryzen AI Halo reference platform describes bandwidth of up to 256GB/s in a 120W platform configuration.

That is a radically larger integrated GPU than the graphics hardware normally found in thin laptops, mini PCs, or handheld gaming devices. It also explains why the original leak inspired claims that the tablet could “top” the PS5.

The Z13’s unified-memory architecture has one theoretical advantage: CPU and GPU workloads can draw from a large shared pool, and the operating system can allocate memory dynamically. A 64GB or 128GB configuration can be useful when gaming alongside demanding applications, running local AI models, or working with large media projects.

But compute-unit counts are not a universal performance ranking. The units, clock speeds, graphics architecture, memory behavior, drivers, power limits, and game engine all matter.

Does the ROG Flow Z13 beat a PS5?

There is no defensible universal answer that it does. “More powerful than a PS5” is a theoretical or workload-dependent claim, not a guaranteed gaming verdict.

A meaningful comparison would require the same game, equivalent game versions, the same rendering resolution, comparable image quality, the same frame-rate target, equivalent upscaling, matching ray-tracing settings, and comparable power conditions. It would also need to account for driver overhead and the PS5’s fixed hardware target.

The two systems are built for different environments:

  • ROG Flow Z13: A Windows PC with variable power modes, configurable graphics settings, active cooling, PC drivers, and shared LPDDR5X memory.
  • PlayStation 5: A fixed-power console with dedicated graphics memory and software developed against a known hardware configuration.

The Z13 may outperform the console in selected synthetic tests, CPU-heavy workloads, or PC games configured for its strengths. It may also deliver console-class results at an appropriate resolution with upscaling. That does not mean every game will run faster or look better than its PS5 version.

Native 2560×1600 gaming is especially important here. It places considerably more work on the GPU than 1080p or an upscaled lower-resolution output. A high-refresh display does not mean demanding games will run at 180 frames per second, particularly on battery power.

The accurate description is therefore: the Flow Z13 has unusually powerful integrated graphics with genuine console-class potential in selected workloads, but it is not a universal PS5 replacement.

Cooling and power are central to the design

A tablet has less internal cooling volume than a conventional gaming laptop. ASUS addresses that limitation with a stainless-steel and copper vapor chamber, larger intake vents, and second-generation Arc Flow Fans. ASUS claims a 70% airflow increase over the previous Z13 design.

The leaked presentation reportedly discussed up to 110 watts of total device power. AMD’s separate Ryzen AI Halo developer platform lists the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 in a 120W configuration. Those numbers describe different contexts: an ASUS design target and an AMD reference platform. Neither should be treated as the guaranteed sustained gaming draw of every retail Z13 model.

In practical use, the engineering trade-off is straightforward:

  • Maximum performance is intended for use with the AC adapter.
  • Battery operation can reduce performance, power limits, or runtime.
  • Active fans mean this is not a silent tablet.
  • High sustained performance depends on temperatures and fan behavior, not just the chip’s theoretical specifications.
  • The 200W adapter adds bulk to an otherwise compact system.

The result is portable hardware with laptop-like behavior—not a low-power tablet that happens to play PC games.

  • Windows gaming handhelds: A better fit for controller-first portability, usually with lower performance and smaller screens.
  • Desktop PCs: A better fit for maximum performance per dollar, upgrades, and dedicated graphics memory.
  • PlayStation 5: A better fit for a fixed-cost console experience with software optimized for known hardware.
  • Strix Halo mini PCs or workstations: A better fit for buyers who want Ryzen AI Max CPU and GPU performance without paying for a touchscreen, battery, detachable keyboard, and compact tablet cooling system.

None of those options is automatically better for every buyer. The Z13’s premium exists because it combines several products in one unusually compact design.

Who should consider the ROG Flow Z13?

The Z13 makes the most sense for someone who specifically wants a high-end Windows gaming machine that can function as a touchscreen tablet, detachable laptop, creative workstation, and local-AI system.

It is particularly compelling if you:

  • Want the strongest integrated graphics available in a tablet-like Windows device.
  • Value a 13.4-inch high-refresh touchscreen.
  • Need Windows software and the PC game library.
  • Can play demanding games while plugged in.
  • Prefer one premium hybrid device over separate gaming and productivity systems.
  • Accept that memory capacity must be selected at purchase and is not the same as dedicated VRAM.

It is a poor fit if you mainly want the best performance per dollar, iPad-like battery life, quiet operation, an inexpensive console replacement, or a discrete GPU with dedicated VRAM. It is also difficult to justify for desk-bound gaming, where a conventional laptop or desktop can provide more cooling and upgrade flexibility for the money.

Verdict: a real leak, an exceptional tablet, and an overstated headline

The 2024 leak got the important story right. ASUS was developing a ROG Flow Z13 around AMD’s large Strix Halo design, and that concept became the 2025 ROG Flow Z13 with Ryzen AI Max processors.

The top model’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Radeon 8060S graphics, 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units, and up to 128GB of shared memory are genuinely remarkable for a tablet-sized Windows machine. They justify comparisons with consoles and dedicated-GPU laptops.

But the PS5 comparison stops being simple once power limits, cooling, memory architecture, game optimization, resolution, and configuration differences enter the picture. The ROG Flow Z13 is best understood as a premium Windows gaming laptop compressed into a detachable tablet form factor—not as a guaranteed PS5-beater.
