Atomfall is an investigation sandbox, not a shooter with a single quest line to follow. Start by choosing settings that suit you, then gather clues, watch your supplies, and decide which fights are worth taking. These ten tips help you find your footing without spoiling the story.
1. Choose a playstyle, then adjust it
Rebellion offers five presets: Sightseer, Investigator, Brawler, Survivor, and Veteran. Each sets a different balance of combat pressure, survival demands, and exploration guidance; Survivor is the developer’s recommended experience, not a requirement. You can customize settings in Options and change them later, so there is no need to restart just because a preset does not suit you. Rebellion’s launch guidance describes the game as a sandbox to explore at your own pace and style.

2. Follow Leads as clues, not a checklist
Conversations, recordings, letters, and other discoveries can reveal Leads. These are investigative threads, not mandatory steps in a fixed mission sequence: you choose what to pursue, and optional Leads connect in different ways to the larger mystery. Follow what interests you, and do not assume that an uncompleted Lead means you are stuck. Rebellion’s explanation of Leads notes that the route through the story can vary.
3. Use the opening area to build context
After leaving the bunker, take time to investigate the nearby area before rushing toward danger. The ringing phone box, Nat, Molly the Tinker, and Wyndham Village are useful early points of reference. Talk to people and explore public places for information; avoid needlessly antagonizing characters, since conversation can help you understand the situation and identify promising leads.

- “Basic Supply Bundle” - Supplies are scarce in the quarantine zone. Improve your chances for survival with additional items to find, including an exclusive melee weapon to help you in those brutal close-quarters engagements. o Exclusive Melee Weapon Variant o Additional Loot Caches o Item Recipe
4. Read the map coordinates and set markers
Atomfall’s map uses E and N coordinates. If you need to return to a spot, place a waypoint or note the coordinates of a named location rather than relying on memory. Markers become especially useful if your Exploration settings provide less automatic direction. PC Gamer’s tips guide explains the coordinate approach.
5. Pick fights deliberately
Before engaging, observe opponents and consider their weapons and position. Sneaking past, taking another route, or retreating are legitimate choices—not failures. Rebellion says completing the game without killing anyone is possible, though extremely challenging. Combat also is not a dependable way to grind character levels: GameSpot’s beginner guide reports that enemies do not provide conventional XP.

- Schalte mit dem gesammelten Wissen neue Gerätschaften, Waffen und Fähigkeiten frei
- Aufregende Bosskämpfe: Grauen erregende Gegner, die nach vielseitigen Strategien und Taktiken verlangen
6. Make scarce ammunition count
Guns and ammunition are difficult to find, so search thoroughly and avoid firing at encounters you can bypass. If a melee attacker closes in while you reload, a kick can stagger them long enough to finish reloading. PC Gamer lists F on keyboard and left bumper on controller for kicking, but bindings can vary by platform or player configuration; check your controls if those inputs do not work.
7. Barter with a plan
Money has no use in the Quarantine Zone; trading is done by barter. Traders may value different categories of goods, so pay attention to what each person wants. Exchange items you can spare for supplies you actually need rather than treating every trade as a simple cash transaction. Rebellion’s bartering overview emphasizes that a good deal can matter when resources are scarce.

8. Turn surplus materials into trade goods
If crafting materials are crowding your inventory, PC Gamer recommends using a Trader Camp to make items you can barter. Crafted goods can help you trade for useful supplies, including skill manuals. Trader preferences differ: the guide gives Molly’s preference for Molotovs as one example, not a universal rate or guarantee. Consider what a trader values before spending materials.
9. Use a metal detector while scavenging
A metal detector beeps when a find is nearby and can help locate resources such as scrap metal, medical supplies, or ammunition. You may find one while searching or acquire it through barter. It is an in-game tool for making scavenging more productive, especially when you are looking for useful resources rather than following a specific objective.

10. Use storage and handle swarms carefully
Store equipment in pneumatic tubes
Pneumatic tubes let you store weapons and other items. PC Gamer notes that Interchange entrances provide consistent access points, making them useful locations to remember when managing what you carry.
Deal with nests only when the situation allows
Some rat or wasp nests can be destroyed from range to stop those swarms from respawning. If a swarm is already pursuing you, leaving the area can break the pursuit. These tactics apply to particular nest and swarm threats, not every enemy or hazard, so judge the situation before spending ammunition or approaching a nest.
