Its folk-horror and Cold War atmosphere gives that mystery a distinctly British cultural texture.
What is Atomfall?
Atomfall is a single-player survival-action game from Rebellion, released on 27 March 2025. It takes place in a fictional quarantine zone in Northern England, five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster. The disaster is the inspiration for the setting; Atomfall is not a historical simulation. The player explores the zone to find out what happened.

That setup explains the Fallout comparison: both invite players into a dangerous post-nuclear world where supplies matter. But Atomfall’s official descriptions emphasize following leads and investigating a mystery, alongside combat and scavenging. The comparison is useful as a starting point, not a complete account of the game.
Why “British Fallout” misses the point
The mystery is the organizing idea
Atomfall frames its story as a web of leads pursued through exploration, conversation, investigation and combat. Characters can provide information, and the player decides which leads to follow. Rebellion’s description puts that player-driven investigation at the center rather than presenting the game simply as a post-apocalyptic shooter or role-playing adventure. The official material does not establish that every choice changes a particular ending, so it is better to describe the structure as investigative without promising specific narrative outcomes.

Its setting draws on British folk horror and science fiction
Rebellion has pointed to folk horror, Cold War influences and classic British science fiction as inspirations, naming Doctor Who, The Quatermass Experiment and The Day of the Triffids. In his 14 November 2024 Xbox Wire article, Associate Head of Design Ben Fisher wrote: “Britain has a rich history of folk stories – with roots in ancient pagan myths.” He also described the intended tone as a blend of awe and unease; that is the developer’s stated aim, not an independent critical assessment.
The contrast in the game’s imagery helps explain the atmosphere: Fisher’s article discusses Casterfell Woods and Wyndham village, as well as an original folk song featured in the trailer. These references point toward an uncanny rural setting, not just a generic wasteland. Rebellion’s release-date and editions announcement on Xbox Wire gives more detail on those influences.
How survival and combat fit into the investigation
The survival-action elements make the quarantine zone dangerous to explore. The official PlayStation and Steam descriptions mention scarce weapons and ammunition, scavenging, crafting, bartering, ranged combat and hand-to-hand fighting. These systems give exploration practical stakes: players need supplies and must decide how to respond to threats while pursuing leads.

That blend is why the shorthand comparison is not entirely wrong. Atomfall does involve post-nuclear survival and scavenging. But those mechanics support an investigation shaped by exploration and encounters, rather than fully describing the game on their own. PlayStation’s official listing and Steam’s PC listing outline the core activities.
Playstyles and accessibility options
Atomfall offers five preset Playstyles rather than relying on a single difficulty selector. Rebellion Accessibility Designer Cari Watterton described the presets in an Xbox Wire article published 10 April 2025. The four named in the article are Investigator, Brawler, Survivor (the default experience) and Sightseer; the article describes five presets overall. Presets can be tailored and changed during a run, so players can adjust the experience rather than being locked into one choice.
Watterton’s article also documents options for navigation, reading, audio and controls. These are developer-documented features, not a guarantee that every player’s access needs will be met.

- Navigation: navigational hints, flagged leads and waypoint markers.
- Text and contrast: contrast options and text scaling, described as reaching 104 px at 4K resolution.
- Subtitles: color options and directional and distance indicators.
- Audio: additional audio cues.
- Controls: keyboard and controller remapping, plus one-handed presets.

Atomfall is available on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, though the editions and add-ons shown depend on the storefront and may change by region or over time. Rebellion’s 2024 announcement said the Standard Edition would be sold digitally and as a boxed physical edition, and named Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC. Steam lists the PC version.

How to think about the Fallout comparison
Rather than asking whether Atomfall is “just Fallout,” compare what each game asks you to pay attention to. Atomfall’s defining emphasis, as Rebellion presents it, is the mystery: investigating a fictional disaster zone through leads, conversations and exploration, with survival-action and British folk-horror influences shaping the journey. That does not mean the games share no traits, or that one is objectively better. It means “British Fallout” captures the broad survival premise while missing the investigative structure and cultural atmosphere that make Atomfall distinct.
