audioconverterui.dll is a legacy Microsoft Plus for Windows XP file, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. It is described as the “Plus MP3 Audio Converter UI DLL,” so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the complete Microsoft Plus component or the older application that legitimately depends on it.
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website. A replacement may have the wrong architecture, belong to a different installation, be unsafe, or still fail because another dependency is missing.

The file is most likely a legacy 32-bit component because it came from the Windows XP era. That architecture is plausible, not verified from the binary. A 64-bit copy should not be assumed to exist.
Errors you may see
Windows or the affected program may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because audioconverterui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “audioconverterui.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading audioconverterui.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because audioconverterui.dll was not found.”
- “audioconverterui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The exact program requesting the file cannot be identified from the DLL name alone. It is usually the Plus audio-converter feature or an older application that depends on that component.

Work through these fixes in order. Start by identifying the program that produces the message, because reinstalling the wrong application will not restore the correct dependency.
1. Identify the calling program and expected folder
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
First establish which executable is failing.
- Note the exact moment the error appears.
- Check whether it occurs when launching an old audio utility, a shortcut, or a program installed from Windows XP-era media.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Record the executable name and its full folder path.
- If the error appears during startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Details tab, and watch for the older program’s executable. - If you find the executable, open its folder and check whether
audioconverterui.dllis expected beside it or inside a related program directory.
Do not infer the parent application from the filename alone. If no application is obvious, search the Start menu for Microsoft Plus, MP3 converter software, or another legacy audio program. You can also search File Explorer for audioconverterui.dll, but do not download or copy a replacement based only on the search result.
If the error occurs only when opening a particular application, that application is the repair target. If the message appears during startup, inspect the Startup apps list in Task Manager and the installed-program list for an old entry that may have been partially removed.
2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software may have quarantined the file, or it may have detected an altered copy. Restore it only when you can confirm that it belongs to the genuine Microsoft Plus installation.

- Select Virus & threat protection.

- Review recent detections for
audioconverterui.dllor the application that uses it. - Expand the detection and record the file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Confirm that the path belongs to the legitimate Plus or application installation.
- Run a scan before restoring anything.
If the detection identifies malware, do not restore the file. Remove the compromised installation and reinstall the complete program from clean, licensed media. A filename alone cannot prove that a DLL is safe.
Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance explains the protection features and scan controls. If the file was quarantined after a program update, reinstalling the parent application is safer than restoring an isolated copy.

- Select it and choose Repair if that option is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same program that produced the error.
If there is no Repair option:
- Use Uninstall from Programs and Features.
- Restart the computer if prompted.
- Reinstall the complete product from original licensed media or a verifiable Microsoft-provided source.
- Apply any installer updates that belong to that product.
- Restart again and test the affected application.
Do not mix files from another computer, another Windows installation, another language edition, or another Plus release. The DLL and its companion files must come from the same installation.

Microsoft’s current Download Center search can be checked for historical product information, but the availability of a supported standalone Microsoft Plus for Windows XP download is not established. Do not assume that a current Microsoft runtime, DirectX package, .NET runtime, or Windows Update will install this particular file.
4. Reinstall the complete legacy application
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
If the error comes from a program that used the Plus audio-converter feature, repair that application rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
- Return to Programs and Features with
appwiz.cpl. - Select the application that triggers the error.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
- If repair is unavailable, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original installer or a trustworthy vendor-provided source.
- Launch the application from its newly created shortcut.
If the installer asks for the original CD or another installation source, provide the licensed media. A damaged installer may not contain a complete copy of the component, so replacing the application with a random DLL is not a reliable workaround.
A successful repair should allow the same executable to start without the missing-file message. If the message changes to “The specified module could not be found,” the DLL may now exist while one of its dependencies is still missing.
5. Check for a missing dependency, not just a missing DLL
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that audioconverterui.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load a library that it requires.
Check the following:
- Confirm that the repaired application and its DLL came from the same installer.
- Confirm that the application is launching the intended copy, not an abandoned shortcut pointing to an old folder.
- Check whether the program is 32-bit. A legacy XP application generally expects 32-bit dependencies.
- Do not place a 64-bit DLL beside a 32-bit executable.
- Do not copy files into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64as a guess. - Use a reputable dependency-analysis tool or contact the application vendor if the complete reinstall still fails.
The correct dependency may be another application library, an old runtime, or a compatibility problem with the current Windows release. There is no verified evidence that a Visual C++ Redistributable supplies audioconverterui.dll, so installing redistributables at random is not a direct fix.
6. Repair broader Windows corruption with SFC
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
System File Checker is appropriate when other Windows-owned files are also failing. It is not a guaranteed way to recreate a missing Microsoft Plus application file.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, continue with DISM below.
If repeatedly checking system files manually is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling Microsoft Plus remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
7. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
Use DISM when Windows component corruption is suspected, especially when SFC cannot complete or cannot repair protected Windows files.

- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Run SFC again:
sfc /scannow
- Restart once more and test the original application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. It normally does not restore third-party or legacy application files, including a missing Microsoft Plus DLL. If the application still reports the same error, return to the complete Plus or parent-application reinstall.
Microsoft documents SFC through its System File Checker instructions and DISM through its Windows image repair documentation.

8. Use System Restore after a recent removal
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after uninstalling software, cleaning the disk, or making another system change.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore only if you accept those broader changes.
- Sign in after Windows restarts and test the application.
System Restore may remove later software installations or configuration changes. It does not replace a proper reinstall of an old application, so use it when the timing strongly points to a recent change.
9. Check compatibility and update relevant drivers
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A DLL can be present while the old program still fails because the application was designed for Windows XP.
- Right-click the affected application’s executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program again.
Do not assume compatibility mode will make every XP component work on Windows 10 or Windows 11. If the application uses audio hardware, also check its driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the relevant audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify version mismatches when manually checking several hardware vendors is impractical; its full version performs driver installation, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Plus component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 audioconverterui.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose ActiveX or COM registration entry points. audioconverterui.dll is expected to be a normal program dependency for the Plus audio-converter interface, not a registration DLL.
Running the command may produce an entry-point or registration error and distract from the actual problem. It does not repair a missing dependency, restore a damaged installation, or make a 32-bit library work with a 64-bit application.
Common causes
| Cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Plus or the parent application was removed | Repair or reinstall the complete product |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History and restore only after verification |
| Manual deletion or disk cleanup | Reinstall from original, trusted media |
| Damaged installation files | Remove the incomplete copy and reinstall |
| Mismatched DLL and application | Install the complete matching product |
| Disk or file-system corruption | Back up data, check storage health, then reinstall |
| Migration from Windows XP | Use compatibility settings and confirm support limitations |
| Malware or unauthorized replacement | Scan, remove the compromised copy, and reinstall cleanly |
If reinstalling does not work
Identify the executable that produces the message and record its full path. Then check:
- Whether the executable is 32-bit and the installed DLL matches that architecture.
- Whether an old shortcut points to a different copy of the program.
- Whether the DLL exists in the application’s expected directory.
- Whether antivirus has removed another companion file.
- Whether the error changed from “missing” to “specified module could not be found.”
- Whether the application fails for broader compatibility reasons even after the DLL is restored.
If every repair fails, use a dependency-analysis tool to identify the library that cannot load, or contact the software vendor. Do not copy a DLL from another computer or place it in a system directory.

FAQ
Is audioconverterui.dll part of Windows?
Probably not. It is associated with Microsoft Plus for Windows XP and is not known to be a standard System32 or SysWOW64 component.
Which program installed it?
The known association is Microsoft Plus for Windows XP, specifically its MP3 Audio Converter interface. The exact application requesting it cannot be confirmed from the filename alone.
Is audioconverterui.dll safe?
The filename alone cannot establish safety. Verify the file path, installation source, and security history. If antivirus detects malware, do not restore the file.
Should I download the DLL by itself?
Generally no. Standalone downloads can contain malware or the wrong version and architecture. Repair or reinstall the complete licensed application instead.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. They repair Windows-owned files and the Windows component store, while this is normally an application component.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. That can create architecture, version, and security problems. Install the complete product into its intended directory.
Is there a 64-bit version?
A separate 64-bit version is unverified. Treat this as a likely legacy 32-bit dependency and keep the application and its supporting files matched.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does the error say a module is missing when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing library, or the application may be loading the wrong copy. Check the complete installation and use dependency analysis rather than adding random DLLs.
Can Windows Update install this file?
There is no verified current Windows Update or Microsoft runtime package that specifically supplies audioconverterui.dll. Windows Update may improve general compatibility, but it is not the direct repair.
