The exact wording depends on the program, Windows version, and whether the problem is a missing file, broken COM registration, damaged binary, missing dependency, or incompatible architecture.

The 60-second answer

scriptpw.dll is a Microsoft Windows component that implements the ScriptPW.Password COM object. Older console scripts use it to request a password while hiding the characters being typed.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Microsoft documented it with Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft’s archived scripting guidance says the object was no longer available beginning with Windows Vista. That makes a missing scriptpw.dll message on Windows 10 or Windows 11 primarily a compatibility problem, not a missing modern runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do this first:

  1. Identify the script or application requesting scriptpw.dll.
  2. If the computer is Windows XP or Server 2003, repair the original Windows installation or application.
  3. If the computer is Windows 10 or Windows 11, update the script or replace the obsolete application.
  4. Do not download an isolated DLL from a random file site.
  5. Use regsvr32 only when a trusted, compatible copy is already present and COM registration is the actual failure.

The file is not normally supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Windows Update, or a device driver.

What scriptpw.dll does

A typical VBScript call looks like this:

Set oPW = CreateObject("ScriptPW.Password")
password = oPW.GetPassword()

The script creates the ScriptPW.Password COM object and calls its password method. The console accepts the password without displaying the typed characters.

This is a narrow scripting component. It is not a general Windows application runtime, graphics library, device driver, DirectX component, or Visual C++ redistributable.

The component is associated with Windows Script Host and was intended for the Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 era. Windows XP support ended on April 8, 2014, so restoring this component should not be treated as a long-term migration strategy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Windows versions include it

The important version split is:

Windows version What the error usually means
Windows XP or Server 2003 The file may have been deleted, damaged, or removed by an incomplete application change
Windows Vista and later The script may depend on a COM object that is no longer available
Windows 10 and Windows 11 Updating the script or replacing the old application is usually the durable fix

Microsoft’s older documentation identifies the component with XP and Server 2003 and says it became unavailable beginning with Vista. Do not assume that copying an XP DLL into Windows 10 or Windows 11 is supported.

First identify the program requesting the file

A DLL error names the missing component, not necessarily the application that needs it. Repairing the wrong program wastes time and can leave the original problem untouched.

Check when the error appears

Note what happens immediately before the message:

  • Does it appear during startup?
  • Does it appear when opening a particular shortcut?
  • Does it occur when running a .vbs, .cmd, or .bat file?
  • Does it happen after launching an old utility, installer, or administrative tool?
  • Did it begin after uninstalling software, restoring an image, removing antivirus software, or moving a script to another computer?

If the error appears only after double-clicking a shortcut, right-click it and choose Properties. Check the Target field and the Start in folder. The target may reveal the application or script.

If it appears from a scheduled task:

  1. Press Windows and search for Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  4. Check tasks that run at logon, startup, or on a schedule.
  5. Open a suspicious task and select the Actions tab.
  6. Look for a .vbs script, wscript.exe, cscript.exe, or an old application path.

If the message appears during boot:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Startup.
  4. Turn off a nonessential startup item temporarily.
  5. Restart and check whether the error returns.

You can also inspect Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Check Windows Logs > Application.
  5. Look for an event at the same time as the DLL error.
  6. Record the application name and executable path, if shown.

Do not delete a startup item or scheduled task until you know what created it. The goal is to identify the requester, not to hide the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original application

This is the correct first repair when an old utility or third-party program installed, registered, or expected the file.

Use the built-in repair option

On Windows 10 or Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds.
  4. Find the application named in the error.
  5. Select its menu button or the application entry.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If there is no repair option, use the program’s original installer and choose Repair when offered.

Reinstall from the original source

If repair does not help:

  1. Save the application’s settings or data if necessary.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the program again using its original installer or the developer’s official download.
  7. Apply the application’s current updates.
  8. Start it again and check whether the error returns.

Do not use an isolated DLL from a download index as a substitute for the program installer. The installer may also supply configuration, COM registration, scripts, and other dependencies.

If the application is a game, use its launcher’s Verify or Repair function only when that game is confirmed to be the requester. There is no evidence that scriptpw.dll is a standard current game runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What success looks like

The original application should start without the DLL message, and any password prompt should work normally. If the same message returns immediately after reinstalling, check the antivirus section below and verify that you reinstalled the program that actually requested the file.

Fix 2: Update the script or replace the obsolete application

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, this is usually the definitive fix.

A script that contains:

CreateObject("ScriptPW.Password")

is asking for an old COM object that Microsoft says was unavailable beginning with Windows Vista. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a driver will not recreate that object.

Replace the password prompt

If you control the script, migrate it to a supported credential method. PowerShell provides:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Get-Credential

For a secure string input without displaying the password, PowerShell also provides:

Read-Host -AsSecureString

The exact migration depends on what the script does with the credentials. Do not simply store the returned password in plain text or pass it as a command-line argument.

Use a supported application version

If the script belongs to a vendor application:

  1. Check the application’s Help or About screen for its exact name and version.
  2. Visit the application developer’s official support or download page.
  3. Look for a Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatible release.
  4. Install the updated release rather than copying an old system DLL.
  5. If no compatible release exists, ask the vendor for a supported replacement or run the legacy software in an appropriately isolated legacy environment.

Running an obsolete operating system as a permanent internet-connected workstation is not a sound replacement for updating the software.

Fix 3: Restore the original file on Windows XP or Server 2003

Use this path only when the affected computer really is Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 and the file was previously present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s System File Checker can check protected Windows files and restore damaged copies from the system cache or matching installation media.

  1. Log on with an administrator account.
  2. Open Start > Run.
  3. Enter cmd.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. At the command prompt, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait for the scan to finish.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Test the original script or application again.

If SFC requests installation media, use media matching the installed Windows edition, service-pack level, language, and architecture. Do not substitute a file from another Windows release.

SFC may report that it could not repair some files. If that happens, review the result and use the matching Windows installation source or reinstall the affected legacy application. Do not copy an arbitrary scriptpw.dll into the Windows directory.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, SFC cannot restore an XP-only COM feature that was never included in that operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Repair broader Windows corruption on a supported system

DISM and SFC are useful when the error is part of wider Windows corruption, failed servicing, or damaged protected system files. They are not a way to add the retired ScriptPW.Password object to modern Windows.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the application again.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files. If both commands complete successfully but the same ScriptPW.Password error remains, the cause is probably application compatibility rather than general Windows corruption.

Repeatedly running these commands without identifying what changed will not make an XP-only COM object appear on Windows 11.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting damaged components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed. Its free scan shows what it finds, while repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the requesting application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

If scriptpw.dll disappeared immediately after an antivirus scan, inspect the security history before reinstalling or copying anything.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Find the event involving scriptpw.dll.
  7. Expand the event and inspect its path, source, and detection details.

Restore or allow the file only if you can independently confirm that it came from the original Windows installation or the trusted application installer. A file being old does not automatically make it malware, but a password-related DLL should not be restored merely because its name matches the error.

If the file came from a random download site, do not allow it. Remove it, run a scan, and reinstall the original application from its official source.

If antivirus repeatedly quarantines a known-good file from the original installer, update the security definitions and contact the application vendor or security vendor before creating an exclusion. Do not permanently disable protection to keep an obsolete DLL in place.

Fix 6: Use regsvr32 only for a real COM-registration failure

scriptpw.dll implements a COM object, so registration can be relevant when all of these conditions are true:

  • The file is already present.
  • It came from the original Windows installation or trusted application installer.
  • The file matches the operating system and application architecture.
  • The error specifically indicates that ScriptPW.Password cannot be created.
  • The component is supported on that Windows version.

Registration is not a universal missing-DLL fix. It cannot repair a missing file, corrupt binary, wrong architecture, missing dependency, or unsupported Vista-and-later installation.

Register a 64-bit copy

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe "%SystemRoot%System32scriptpw.dll"

Restart the application and test it again.

Register a 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows

A 32-bit application needs a 32-bit DLL. On 64-bit Windows, the directory names are counterintuitive:

  • System32 generally contains 64-bit system binaries.
  • SysWOW64 generally contains 32-bit system binaries.

If you have a trusted 32-bit copy and the application requires it, run the 32-bit registration tool against the actual file path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathscriptpw.dll"

Replace the example path with the location of the trusted file. Do not assume that putting a 32-bit DLL in System32 is correct.

If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, stop. That usually means the file is not the expected COM DLL or is not compatible with that registration procedure. If it reports a dependency or architecture error, investigate the original application rather than downloading another copy.

Fix 7: Check architecture and dependent files

A 32-bit application requires a 32-bit version of a compatible DLL. A 64-bit Windows installation does not mean every application should receive a 64-bit copy.

Check the application’s architecture from its documentation or installer. You can also inspect the executable’s Properties, although the Details tab may not clearly state whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the file is present but Windows still reports that the specified module could not be found, a dependency may be missing. The named DLL can exist while one of its required supporting files cannot load.

Check:

  1. The application’s installation log.
  2. Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
  3. The vendor’s repair or diagnostic tool.
  4. A trusted dependency-analysis tool used by an administrator.

Do not copy DLLs from another computer just because the filenames look similar. A wrong architecture or incompatible build can produce the same loader message and create a second problem.

Fix 8: Do not use Windows Features or Device Manager for this DLL

Windows Features does not provide a supported switch that installs the retired ScriptPW.Password component on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Enabling unrelated features such as .NET Framework or legacy components will not normally supply scriptpw.dll.

Likewise, Device Manager is not a direct repair method for this file. Drivers do not normally install it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the DLL error began alongside a genuine hardware or graphics problem, update the affected driver separately:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
  7. Restart Windows.

Do not update a driver simply because scriptpw.dll is missing. The two issues are normally unrelated.

Outbyte Driver Updater can make driver maintenance easier when you are already dealing with several stale devices and do not want to hunt through multiple manufacturer pages. Its free scan identifies available updates, while driver installation requires the full version, and it will not recreate the obsolete ScriptPW component.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only when the timing fits

System Restore can help when the error began immediately after software installation, removal, an update, or a configuration change.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the programs and drivers that may be removed or restored.
  8. Select Next, then Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not remove personal documents, but applications installed after the restore point may need to be reinstalled.

A restore may make a legacy script launch again, but it does not make an unsupported operating system or obsolete application safe to keep using indefinitely.

Why the error appears after a software change

The timing often identifies the cause:

  • After uninstalling software: the uninstaller may have removed a shared registration or a file that an old script still expects.
  • After restoring an image: the image may contain a script from one machine but not the component or registration it used.
  • After antivirus removal: quarantine or cleanup may have removed the file, or a security product may have exposed an old dependency.
  • After moving a script to another PC: the destination may be Vista or newer, where the object is unavailable, or it may have a different architecture.
  • After reinstalling the application: the installer may not support the current Windows release, or antivirus may quarantine the file again.
  • After a Windows repair or update: the application may depend on a legacy component that the newer operating system does not provide.

The fix is determined by the operating system and the requesting program, not by the filename alone.

Should you download scriptpw.dll separately

Usually, no.

Random DLL download pages can provide:

  • Malware or tampered binaries.
  • The wrong architecture.
  • An incompatible Windows-era copy.
  • A file with incorrect or unverifiable provenance.
  • A DLL that does not include the required COM registration.
  • A file that hides the real application or compatibility problem.

There is no identifiable current Microsoft redistributable package that users should install to obtain scriptpw.dll. Microsoft also does not provide a general supported procedure for copying an XP DLL into Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these sources instead:

  • The original Windows XP or Server 2003 installation media for a genuine legacy system.
  • The original application installer.
  • The application developer’s official support or download page.
  • Microsoft’s built-in repair commands when broader Windows corruption is indicated.

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 by default. Application-local deployment is safer when the original vendor explicitly requires it.

Frequently asked questions

Is scriptpw.dll a Windows file or a third-party file?

It is a Microsoft Windows-era component implementing the ScriptPW.Password COM object. Some old applications and scripts may depend on it, but the error does not prove that a particular game or application supplied it.

What is the usual location?

On Windows XP and Server 2003, it was normally associated with %SystemRoot%System32. Do not use that historical location as instructions to copy the file into a modern Windows installation.

Does Windows 10 or Windows 11 include it?

Microsoft’s archived scripting guidance says the ScriptPW.Password object was unavailable beginning with Windows Vista. A modern system therefore may be working as designed while the old script is incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is this a Visual C++ problem?

Normally, no. Visual C++ redistributables do not normally provide scriptpw.dll. Install or repair them only when the identified application specifically requires them and its vendor documents that requirement.

Is this a DirectX, .NET, Windows Update, or driver problem?

Normally, no. Those components do not normally install this DLL. Run DISM and SFC only when there is evidence of broader Windows corruption.

Does a 32-bit program need a 32-bit copy?

Yes. The application’s architecture determines which compatible DLL and COM registration are required. A 64-bit operating system does not make a 64-bit DLL suitable for a 32-bit application.

Is regsvr32 required?

Only when a trusted, compatible file is present and the failure is specifically a missing COM registration. It cannot create the component on Windows 10 or Windows 11 if the operating system does not include it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows”?

That generally indicates a damaged, incompatible, invalid, or wrong-architecture binary. It is not evidence that a Visual C++ package is missing. Remove any untrusted replacement and repair the original application or script.

What if the error returns after reinstalling?

Check which executable or script is requesting the file, inspect antivirus Protection history, and confirm that the application supports your Windows version. If the requester calls ScriptPW.Password on Windows 10 or Windows 11, reinstalling the same legacy build will not solve the compatibility issue. Update or replace it instead.

What is the permanent fix on Windows 11?

Identify the old script or application and migrate it to a supported credential prompt, such as PowerShell’s Get-Credential or Read-Host -AsSecureString, or install a current version from the application’s developer. Do not treat an isolated DLL download as a permanent repair.
