“libtesseract302.dll” was not found
If Windows says “The program can’t start because libtesseract302.dll is missing from your computer”, the failing application cannot load its older Tesseract OCR engine. libtesseract302.dll is a 32-bit Windows library from the Tesseract 3.02 era, not a Windows system file.
The safest repair is to identify the application that requested it and repair or reinstall that application. Do not download a loose copy and place it in System32.

Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you know:
- A desktop OCR, scanning, document, or image application shows the error: repair or reinstall that application first.
- A .NET program reports “Unable to load DLL ‘libtesseract302’”: restore the complete native OCR bundle beside the executable or in the wrapper’s native folder.
- A Java or Tess4J program fails with
UnsatisfiedLinkError: check the Java library path, platform-specific native folder, and process architecture. - The DLL exists, but Windows says “The specified module could not be found”: a dependency such as Leptonica or the Visual C++ runtime may be missing.
- The problem started after security software acted: check Windows Security Protection history for quarantine.
- The error began after an update or interrupted installation: repair the owning application, then use the launcher’s file verification feature if available.
- You do not know which program owns the file: inspect the failing executable’s location before copying or replacing anything.
What libtesseract302.dll is
Tesseract is an optical character recognition engine. The 302 portion of this filename strongly identifies the older Tesseract 3.02 Windows library. Tesseract’s archived Windows development package was distributed with the name tesseract-3.02.02-win32-lib-include-dirs.zip, along with related native files, headers, import libraries, and OCR data.
This library commonly appears in:
- Older OCR and scanning applications
- C and C++ programs using Tesseract
- Early .NET wrappers, including older Charles Weld Tesseract integrations
- Java applications using Tess4J or another native Tesseract bridge
- Bundled OCR components inside document and image software
It is not installed universally by Windows, and the filename alone cannot identify the exact publisher of the copy on your computer. Check the path, installer, application name, digital signature, and file provenance.

The correct location is normally the application directory, its native-library directory, or a deployment folder selected by the developer. It should not normally be copied to:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A global Windows folder
- An unrelated application directory
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution when a normal Windows program displays the error.
Find the application that owns the missing file
- Read the full error window and note the application name.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Open file location.
- If that opens a shortcut, right-click the shortcut again and choose Open file location.
- Note the folder containing the application executable.
- Check whether
libtesseract302.dllis already beside that executable.
If the error appears during a scan, document conversion, image import, or OCR operation, the owning program may be a component launched by a larger application. The executable path is more reliable than the filename alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Repair the installation
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the application connected to the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the vendor’s maintenance option.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
A successful repair restores the native DLL and its companion files to the application folder. The program should launch without the missing-file message.
Reinstall from the legitimate source
If repair does not work:
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application developer or your organization’s approved software source.
- Install it using an administrator account.
- Start the application and test the OCR feature.
If the application is managed by Steam, a game launcher, or another software manager, use its Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity command instead of copying the DLL manually.
For a developer project, use the original Tesseract integration package or the archived Tesseract Windows package that matches the project. The current Tesseract package or a current .NET wrapper should not be treated as a drop-in replacement for a Tesseract 3.02 application without compatibility testing.
Fix 2: Restore the complete native OCR bundle
Replacing only libtesseract302.dll often produces another error because Tesseract requires related files.

A working older deployment may need:
libtesseract302.dll- The matching Leptonica DLL, such as a compatible
liblept*.dll - The correct Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A compatible
tessdatadirectory - The correct 32-bit process architecture
For a developer build:
- Determine which executable loads Tesseract.
- Check whether it is compiled for x86 or x64.
- Obtain the matching original Tesseract package from the project or application vendor.
- Copy the complete native bundle into the application’s documented native directory.
- Keep
tessdatain the location expected by the application. - Rebuild or republish the application.
- Test from the normal launch method, not only from an administrator command prompt.
Do not overwrite a newer Tesseract library with an older one merely because the filenames look similar. A wrapper may search its output folder, a Java classpath resource, a working directory, or a platform-specific native folder. Deployment configuration usually matters more than the Windows registry.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit Tesseract DLL cannot load into a 64-bit process, and a 64-bit DLL cannot load into a 32-bit process.
Windows itself may be 64-bit while the failing application is 32-bit. In that case, the application needs 32-bit native files and the x86 Visual C++ runtime.
To check the process:
- Start the affected application, if possible.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if available.
- Look for the application’s process architecture.
For a developer project, check the project’s target platform or build configuration. Match all of these:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Application architecture
libtesseract302.dllarchitecture- Leptonica architecture
- Visual C++ runtime architecture
- Java or .NET host architecture, where applicable
A message such as “not designed to run on Windows” commonly points to corruption, an architecture mismatch, or an incompatible binary. It does not usually mean that the DLL needs registry registration.
Fix 4: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
A Tesseract build compiled with Visual C++ may depend on a Microsoft runtime. If libtesseract302.dll is present but still will not load, this is an important check.
- Open Microsoft’s official Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Download the package matching the failing process.
- Use x86 for a 32-bit application, even on 64-bit Windows.
- Use x64 for a 64-bit application.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Older Tesseract builds may have been compiled with older Visual C++ toolchains. If the application vendor documents a specific runtime, follow that requirement rather than assuming the newest package will satisfy every legacy build.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a native OCR library after an update or repair.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that references the application folder or
libtesseract302.dll. - Confirm the original file came from the legitimate application installer or project package.
- Scan the installer and application folder before restoring anything.
Restore a quarantined file only when its provenance is clear. If the detection is uncertain, reinstall the application from its official source instead. The filename alone cannot prove that a DLL is safe.
Fix 6: Check tessdata after the DLL loads
A missing or incompatible tessdata directory is a different problem from a missing native DLL. You may fix the loading error and then see an OCR initialization or language-data error.
Check that:
- The application’s expected
tessdatafolder exists. - It was restored by the same installer or package as the native libraries.
- The application is configured to use that folder.
- The language data matches the Tesseract generation expected by the application.
Do not copy random language files into the folder. Restore the complete data directory from the application’s original package.
Fix 7: Update a related scanner or imaging driver
A scanner or imaging application may fail after its device driver or support package becomes damaged. This is not usually the direct source of libtesseract302.dll, but it can explain why the OCR workflow stopped working.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers.
- Right-click the scanner or imaging device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from the scanner or device manufacturer. Do not use a driver intended for a different model or architecture.

Manually hunting through device entries and matching driver packages can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the OCR application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Run DISM and System File Checker as a fallback
libtesseract302.dll is a third-party application file, so SFC and DISM will not normally recreate it. Use these tools when Windows has broader corruption, update failures, or repair problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the owning OCR application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for restoring the application’s own native bundle.
Repeating these commands without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but the application’s installer is still the correct source for libtesseract302.dll.
Fix 9: Use System Restore only after identifying a recent change
If the error began immediately after an application update, driver installation, or Windows change:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore can reverse recent software changes, but it will not reliably replace a missing application installation. If the problem returns, reinstall the owning program from its official source.

Do not run:
regsvr32 libtesseract302.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A normal Tesseract runtime library is loaded by the application and does not need COM registration. Registration will not repair a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged file, or missing tessdata.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading a standalone DLL is risky because it may contain malware, belong to a different Tesseract build, use the wrong architecture, or omit Leptonica and other dependencies. It also leaves the application installation inconsistent and can overwrite a compatible file.
Use the owning application’s official installer, repair package, or documented Tesseract 3.02 archive instead. Never copy an unknown file into System32, change the global PATH to hide the error, or replace a newer application library with an older one.

FAQ
Is libtesseract302.dll part of Windows?
No. It is an application library associated with older Tesseract OCR 3.02-era integrations.
Which program installed it?
There is no universal application. The owner may be an OCR, scanning, document, image, .NET, or Java program. The failing executable’s folder and installed application list provide the best evidence.
Does “specified module could not be found” mean this DLL is missing?
Not necessarily. Windows may be unable to load a dependency of libtesseract302.dll, such as Leptonica or the required Visual C++ runtime.
Do I need the x86 or x64 runtime?
Match the failing process, not Windows itself. A 32-bit application needs the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
Can I copy the DLL into System32?
No. Restore it beside the application executable or in the native directory specified by the application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the DLL load but OCR still fail?
The native library may load successfully while tessdata is missing, misplaced, or incompatible. Restore the complete matching OCR package.
What information should I give support?
Provide the exact error text, application name, executable path, Windows architecture, process architecture, whether the DLL exists beside the executable, and whether antivirus quarantined it. Avoid sending a DLL copied from an unknown source.
