auditpolmsg.dll Errors: Verify and Repair Windows Audit Messages

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, note:

  • Which program or Windows feature shows the error
  • Whether it appears during startup, sign-in, or when opening an application
  • Whether the message names auditpolmsg.dll or auditpolmsg.dll.mui
  • Whether your Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the file is missing from C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64

auditpolmsg.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Audit Policy MMC SnapIn Messages. It supplies message and string resources used by Windows audit-policy and Microsoft Management Console components, so a missing copy usually points to Windows damage rather than a missing game runtime.

Do not download this DLL from a random replacement site. A loose file can have the wrong architecture, version, language resources, or malicious code, and it may not repair the underlying component-store problem.

1. Install pending Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected Windows files unavailable.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Reopen the program that displayed the error.

If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below.

#1 Best Overall

On Windows 11, some systems also have a repair reinstall:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  3. Click Reinstall now.
  4. Follow the prompts.

This option reinstalls the current Windows version while normally preserving applications, files, and settings. It may not appear on managed computers or every Windows 11 build.

2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

This is the main repair sequence for a missing or damaged Windows copy of auditpolmsg.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store first; System File Checker then restores protected files from that repaired store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program again.

A successful result is a message stating that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them.

If SFC says it repaired files, restart and test. If it says some files could not be repaired, run DISM once more, restart, and run SFC again. Persistent failures may indicate disk corruption, an unavailable repair source, or deeper Windows damage.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the damaged Windows components and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for every case.

If DISM reports that source files cannot be found

Microsoft supports using a matching Windows installation source with DISM. The source must correspond to the same Windows version and installation configuration. Do not point DISM at an unrelated Windows computer or an older ISO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you do not have matching installation media, install pending updates first and retry. For a machine that remains damaged, use the in-place repair option described later rather than copying auditpolmsg.dll manually.

3. Check whether Windows Defender quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged-looking system file. Do not disable antivirus protection just to force a DLL into place.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Click Protection history.
  5. Review recent entries involving auditpolmsg.dll.
  6. If an item was quarantined, inspect its path and detection details before taking action.

Restore a quarantined file only when its location, Microsoft signature, and file identity are consistent with a genuine Windows component. If Defender detects it again, do not repeatedly restore it. Run a full scan, and use an offline scan if malware is suspected.

If the file repeatedly disappears, was modified outside Windows directories, or has an invalid signature, investigate malware before attempting replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify the location, architecture, and signature

The native Windows copy normally belongs here:

C:WindowsSystem32auditpolmsg.dll

On 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit Windows-on-Windows copy normally belongs here:

C:WindowsSysWOW64auditpolmsg.dll

Despite its name, SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. Do not swap files between these folders.

You can inspect both paths with PowerShell:

$paths = @(
  "$env:windirSystem32auditpolmsg.dll",
  "$env:windirSysWOW64auditpolmsg.dll"
)

Get-Item $paths -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
  Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTime,
    @{Name="Version";Expression={$_.VersionInfo.FileVersion}}

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32auditpolmsg.dll"

A genuine current file should normally show a valid Microsoft signature and a Windows system-directory path. File versions and sizes vary with Windows build, architecture, language, and cumulative servicing, so do not reject a file solely because its version or size differs from an old example found online.

If the only copy is in an application folder, determine whether that application supplied it. A program-local copy should be repaired through the program’s official installer, not copied into System32.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Understand the exact error wording

“The specified module could not be found”

This message does not always mean that auditpolmsg.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or inaccessible.

Check the complete path shown by the application and review Event Viewer:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs > Application.
  4. Look for an error recorded at the time of the failure.
  5. Note the application name, path, and any additional module named.

Do not copy the named DLL repeatedly without identifying the dependency chain.

auditpolmsg.dll.mui

A .mui file is a language-resource file. It is separate from the neutral auditpolmsg.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error names auditpolmsg.dll.mui:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
  2. Confirm that the expected Windows display language is installed.
  3. Install pending Windows updates.
  4. Run DISM followed by SFC as described above.
  5. Restart and test again.

Do not replace a .mui file with one from a different Windows release or language pack.

6. Repair an application-local copy, if applicable

auditpolmsg.dll is a Windows inbox component, but an application can display a loader error while starting from its own directory. First determine the path involved.

If the error belongs to a game or application:

  1. Open the application’s launcher.
  2. Open its settings or library page.
  3. Choose Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
  4. Allow the scan to complete.
  5. Restart the launcher and test the program.

Use this only for a copy inside that application’s installation directory. It does not repair the Windows copy in System32 or SysWOW64.

If verification fails, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Back up saved data and settings first if the application stores them locally.

Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because this filename appears. Those packages provide their own components; auditpolmsg.dll is a Windows audit-policy message resource.

7. Do not register this DLL with regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement COM self-registration through DllRegisterServer and related entry points. auditpolmsg.dll is a resource-heavy Windows message DLL, not a general COM component.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a generic repair:

regsvr32 auditpolmsg.dll
regsvr32 /u auditpolmsg.dll

They can produce another error without restoring the missing Windows component. Use DISM and SFC instead.

8. Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a driver, application, update, or security change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Choose Show more restore points if available.
  5. Select a restore point from before the failure began.
  6. Click Next > Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal documents, but review the affected applications shown before confirming.

9. Repair drivers only when the error identifies a driver

A graphics or chipset driver is not normally the source of auditpolmsg.dll. Do not reinstall drivers as the first response unless Event Viewer or the application identifies a driver failure.

For a confirmed driver problem:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the affected device and select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. If the problem began after an update, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when available.
  7. Otherwise download the driver from the device manufacturer’s official support page.

Finding which of many installed drivers is stale can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation through its full version is optional, and updating a driver will not replace a missing Windows audit-policy DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Escalate persistent corruption safely

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, back up important data and check the system drive for health problems. Review the servicing log at:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

For continuing corruption, use matching Windows installation media to perform an in-place repair installation. Choose the option that preserves personal files and applications, and do not start a clean installation unless you have backed up the computer and intentionally want to remove its contents.

A file from Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 11 is not interchangeable merely because the filename matches. Windows edition, build, architecture, language, and servicing level all matter.

FAQ

Is auditpolmsg.dll safe?

A genuine copy should be Microsoft-signed and located in a Windows system directory. An unsigned copy, a copy in a temporary or download folder, or a file with suspicious recent changes deserves malware investigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download auditpolmsg.dll separately?

Do not use random DLL download sites. The supported acquisition paths are Windows Update, Windows servicing, repair commands, or matching installation media.

Should I copy the file from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, or servicing level. Manual copying can also leave the component store inconsistent.

Is the file required by a game?

Usually not as a game-owned dependency. If the error points to an application-local copy, repair that application. If it points to System32 or SysWOW64, repair Windows.

Why does the error mention a missing DLL when the file exists?

A dependent DLL may be missing or incompatible. “The specified module could not be found” can describe a failure lower in the dependency chain, not only the named file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the safest first repair?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, run DISM, then run sfc /scannow. This restores the Windows component through supported servicing rather than introducing an unverified replacement.
