If Windows says pdfxeditcore.x86.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair the PDF-XChange product or application that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is used by PDF-XChange Editor and by applications built with the PDF-XChange Editor SDK. It is supplied by Tracker Software Products/PDF-XChange. The safest repair is to identify the program producing the message, then repair or reinstall that program with its official installer.

Fix 1: Identify the application requesting the DLL
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
The DLL name alone does not identify the exact program. It could be PDF-XChange Editor, an older PDF-XChange installation, an embedded business application, a plug-in, a scheduled task, or a developer-built PDF application.

Start with the error context:
- Note which program was opening when the message appeared.
- Check the title bar of the error dialog.
- Look for a shortcut, document, plug-in, or scheduled task that launched immediately before the error.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps and look for PDF-XChange or software that may embed PDF-XChange.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search for
PDF-XChange. - If the error appears only when opening a particular business application, contact that application’s administrator or developer. The host application may contain its own SDK deployment.
If the error appears during Windows startup, right-click the taskbar, open Task Manager, and inspect Startup apps. Temporarily disable only the identified PDF-related entry, restart, and check whether the message stops. Re-enable it after testing.

Common messages
You may see wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because pdfxeditcore.x86.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because pdfxeditcore.x86.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading pdfxeditcore.x86.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “pdfxeditcore.x86.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are Windows loader messages. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing, not necessarily that the named file itself is absent.
Fix 2: Repair PDF-XChange from Windows
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Use Windows repair first because it can restore missing application files without requiring a complete removal.
- Press
Windows+I. - Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for PDF-XChange Editor.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if shown.
- Select Repair.
- Start PDF-XChange Editor again.
Some desktop installations do not show Advanced options. In that case:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the PDF-XChange product.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similar maintenance option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If repair succeeds, the program should start without the DLL message. If the repair option is missing or the error remains, continue with a clean reinstall.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected PDF-XChange product
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
Download the installer only from the official PDF-XChange downloads page or the software vendor that supplied the embedding application. Do not use a DLL download site.
Before uninstalling, save any application settings, licenses, or deployment details that your organization needs.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find PDF-XChange Editor or the application that reports the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current compatible package from the official source.
- Start the application again.
If the application is an older licensed build, use the vendor’s official older-version installer rather than mixing files from different SDK generations.
Do not copy pdfxeditcore.x86.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or another unrelated program folder. That can create a wrong-version, wrong-architecture, or untrusted deployment and often leaves the real installation problem unresolved.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update or installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry naming
pdfxeditcore.x86.dll, PDF-XChange, or the affected application. - Open the detection details.
Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:
- It came from the official PDF-XChange installation.
- The application was obtained from a trusted vendor.
- The file is located in the application’s expected installation directory.
- Your organization’s security policy permits restoring it.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to make the error disappear. If Windows Security continues removing the file after a legitimate reinstall, ask the software vendor or your administrator to review the detection.
Fix 5: Confirm the architecture is correct
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
The x86 suffix means the DLL is for a 32-bit process. It does not mean that Windows itself must be 32-bit.
A 32-bit application requires:
PDFXEditCore.x86.dll
A 64-bit application requires the corresponding 64-bit library:
PDFXEditCore.x64.dll
Older SDK deployments use the PDFXEditCore naming. In the v11 SDK, the core library was renamed:
PXCEditorCore.x86.dll
PXCEditorCore.x64.dll
The application process determines which file is required. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit PDF-XChange software, so seeing an x86 error on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is not abnormal.

To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Check System type.
- Check the application vendor’s documentation or installation package for the application’s process architecture.
If a developer-built application is 32-bit, redeploy the matching x86 SDK files. Replacing them with x64 files will not solve the problem.
Fix 6: Repair or install the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime when appropriate
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A loader message can result from a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. However, Visual C++ redistributables do not contain the PDF-XChange DLL itself, so installing them is not the first repair for an ordinary missing-file message.
Use the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable guidance to determine which package matches the application. The runtime architecture must match the application, just as the SDK DLL architecture does.
Recommended Free Tools
After installing or repairing the appropriate package:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application.
- If the error remains unchanged, return to the PDF-XChange repair or reinstall step.
Do not assume that installing every available runtime package will fix the problem.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when broader Windows symptoms exist
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
pdfxeditcore.x86.dll is a third-party PDF-XChange file. Windows component repair normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC when you also see damaged Windows features, unexplained system-file errors, crashes in multiple unrelated applications, or failed Windows components.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the PDF-XChange application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components, not the normal PDF-XChange application payload.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slower. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies, while repair actions are performed by the full version; reinstalling the affected PDF-XChange program remains the definitive fix when its own files are missing.
Fix 8: Update drivers only if the failure is broader than this DLL
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics or system driver is not the usual cause of a missing pdfxeditcore.x86.dll message. Consider driver troubleshooting only if PDF-XChange also crashes during rendering, the display goes blank, several graphics applications fail, or Device Manager reports a device problem.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if an update is installed.
Also check Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates. Install only drivers appropriate for the computer.
When several devices have warnings, manually locating the correct versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is not a substitute for reinstalling PDF-XChange when that application owns the missing file.
Developer and SDK deployment checks
Time needed: 15–60 minutes
If you maintain an application built with the PDF-XChange Editor SDK, reinstalling PDF-XChange Editor may not fix the deployment. Verify the complete SDK payload from the same build.
Deploy the matching files together
Older SDK deployments may require:
- The matching x86 or x64 core DLL
Resources.dat- The correct application files and manifests
Current v11 SDK deployments require a compatible Common folder and ICU data as well. Do not copy only the DLL into the application directory.
Confirm that:
- The host process architecture matches the SDK library.
- All companion files came from the same SDK build.
- The files are in the locations expected by the application.
- The application manifest is present when using registration-free deployment.
- The SDK manifest, DLL, and supporting files have the required arrangement.
- An older v10 filename has not been mixed with v11 deployment files.

Use regsvr32 only for the SDK COM-server scenario
regsvr32 is generally irrelevant to an ordinary missing-DLL error. It does not download a file, repair a damaged installation, or supply missing dependencies.
It can be appropriate when a developer is deliberately deploying the SDK as a COM server and the vendor’s deployment instructions require registration. In that case, use the matching SDK file from the official deployment and run the appropriate command:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →regsvr32 <SDKLibName>.x86.DLL
A 64-bit process requires the corresponding x64 deployment and registration procedure. Avoid registering an arbitrary downloaded DLL.
A Class not registered message is a different failure from a missing-file message. It may indicate missing COM registration, an SDK license or deployment issue, a manifest problem, or a bitness mismatch.
Check for global COM conflicts
Different applications can overwrite one another’s globally registered SDK version. The installer run last may determine which SDK version is active. Prefer registration-free deployment when supported, or manage registration through a controlled vendor installer.

FAQ
Is pdfxeditcore.x86.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a PDF-XChange Editor SDK library from Tracker Software Products/PDF-XChange.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep it with the application or SDK deployment that requires it. The correct location depends on the host application.
Is the file malicious?
The filename identifies a legitimate PDF-XChange component, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is trustworthy. Verify that it came from an official installation and review antivirus findings.
Why does a 32-bit DLL appear on 64-bit Windows?
Because a 32-bit application runs on 64-bit Windows and needs 32-bit libraries. The process architecture, not the Windows architecture alone, determines the required DLL.
Will Visual C++ fix the error?
Only if the affected build is missing a Microsoft runtime dependency. Visual C++ does not replace the PDF-XChange SDK library.
Should I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Usually not. Use registration only for a documented PDF-XChange SDK COM-server deployment, using the vendor-supplied matching file.
Why did reinstalling PDF-XChange not help?
The error may belong to another host application, an old plug-in, or a developer deployment. It may also indicate a missing dependency or companion SDK file rather than the core DLL itself.
